Turning on/off searchlights

Archive: 7 posts

Is there a way to turn searchlights on or off? In the MGS mission they gradually turn off when you are spotted, but i can't seem to connect them to other type of switches, regardless if they're on/off or speed type. If there's a way to do this, searchlight would be a lot more useful, since you don't have to turn them the other way and set their radius to 360 degrees if you need their sensor but not their light2009-07-14 12:48:00

I'm pretty sure there isn't. And I don't recall the gradual turning off in MSG (not saying you're wrong, I just never noticed it).

All I can suggest is to make it really really small, then tweak the radius on the sensor. It's not perfect but it works rather well for most applications.

It sucks though, and I really want plane-limited prox and mag key options

I think you mean the plasma fire/alert phase... that's what's turning off, not the "light" itself. The lights are connected to a logic box that's either emitting a finite life-span emitter key that triggers a magnetic switch to activate the alarms, lights, plasma fire turret action, doors closing etc.

That, or a flipper setting piston that pops rapidly down into radius of a mag switch, and then slowly extends back up out of it's radius to it's default "all clear" position.

I forget what the logic boxes looked like, but if you angle the first slingshot launcher all the way up to the left, and then launch yourself as high and to the left as possible, you can land on top of the buildings that you passed on the way there. Stay on top of the buildings, and make your way to the beginning without falling off - you'll get a sneak peak at some of MM's logic boxes for the spotlight area, and you'll also make the Global lighting tool change rapidly back to it's original setting without a proper transition... kind of a funny "break" moment for one of MM's ultra-polished levels.

Yep, i already did that trick when i was still searching for prize bubbles xD

I just checked: the global settings don't change, there are 2 red LEDs that come down, and the searchlight do turn off; post a screen would be useless since snapshots don't capture light

I just played that section. You're right... and I can't connect any switches it to it on any settings. Something is awry here, and I think it's something akin to thehidden tweakable laser switch (or the hidden angle switch)that they haven't given us. They're definitely not re-emitting, and the light radius is far too wide/triangular to be a spotlight mask to cover a searchlight with the brightness turned down.2009-07-14 15:10:00

I smell greed...the MM people want to keep all these funny cool inventions to themselves.

No, but I would like to know how to accomplish what they did. That would be useful, indeed.

I'd have to agree with ninja on this one, it has to be like the tweakable laser. I don't get why they simplify the objects they give to us? Why develop features then disable them 2009-07-14 17:05:00
