LBP editing weirdness

Archive: 10 posts

Hi
I am new to editing in LBP and over the last couple of weeks have noticed a few weird things going as I develop a level.
For example
- materials changing colour when gluing other objects to them
- materials becoming glued to one another
- pistons just stopping working
- emitters working sometimes and then not, having more than one emitter seems to stop each other working
- switches stop triggering
- dissolve materials disappearing between create and play mode

Is this a common experience or is it down to user error or an incorrect methodology in making things?

Any advice much appreciated.

Many of those things have and are happening to me and i've yet to find out any reason why. Selecting the material/object has corrected the fault for me before - or just re-wind. So you're not alone - unfortunatley 2009-07-13 20:58:00

Also - for example - when editing the properties of a piston, sometimes the piston will respond in real time to the changes I am making, and sometimes it will wait until I have completely closed down my poppit...
Are there any tuts / guides on best practice level making ?
Do the people who make all the wonderful levels out there know ways round this stuff or are they just very patient and happy to keep remaking bits when they break for no reason ?

On two occasions all the pistons and wobble bolts just stopped working for no obvious reason on my levels. I found no solution other than to capture the entire level and transfer it to a new moon.2009-07-13 21:55:00

After a while you learn what works (by trial and error) and just stop doing the things that cause problems. That said I haven't really experienced most of the things you've mentioned.

- materials changing colour when gluing other objects to them

I've lost stickers (usually 3d ones when glueing)...is that what you mean by color change?

- materials becoming glued to one another

This has never happened to me when it wasn't my fault...it's always when I wasn't paying attention and tried to glue something else close by and got more stuff connected than I wanted. Some people recommend using bolts instead of glue...or dark matter nails. I still glue lots of small objects...but I always work in a clean location then move it where it needs to go. I also like to glue small invisible bits of dark matter to make floating platforms, since dark matter nails can be visible with some materials.

- pistons just stopping working

Haven't see this...did the item that the pistion was moving get glued?

- emitters working sometimes and then not, having more than one emitter seems to stop each other working

Do the emitters emit objects into the same space? An emitter can't emit something if something else is in that locations...I've put plenty of emitters in close proximity before as long as they don't emit objects to the same space you'll be fine.

- switches stop triggering

No idea, haven't had any real switch problems...

- dissolve materials disappearing between create and play mode

It's always a good idea when making changes to un-pause (while flying) in create mode to make sure everything stays in place. Sometimes when in "play" mode in the editor you trigger stuff and don't always notice. I've had materials dissapear in create mode because they were "stressed" and something sitting on it agiated it when un-paused long enough...but that's pretty rare. Fly around periodically in create mode and look for stuff like this. One like I like to do is lock absolutely everything in the level down with prox sensors (or glue stuff to a chuck of dissolve that a prox sensor removes) so it doesn't fall apart then I'm not looking.

- when editing the properties of a piston, sometimes the piston will respond in real time

I almost always make these sorts of edit in pause mode...so I can't say I've ever noticed the pistion responding in real-time...

Thanks for the reply - maybe there is some user error going on then, and its about getting a more systematic approach to making stuff.

The material that changed was sponge, but the colour changed when I glued some glass to it. There weren't any stickers on it.

Another one that is happening is homemade objects that have been used in emitters are retaining a lifespan when placed as ordinary objects into the level, so they just disappear after a set amount of time - and they are not even dissolve material.

Even if they have an infinite lifespan, check to see how many you have for max emitted, because if you emit one more than that, it will delete the first one you emitted.

I think you need to know to pause when doing things, and always test in Play Mode rather than Create Mode. For instance, if you set up dissolve material, and text it in Create Mode, and it disappears, then it vanishes in Play Mode, too.

If you do want to test something in Create Mode, pause it while you work on it. When you want to test it, un-pause and then do what you want. If it works, then press the LEFT directional button. That is like a "undo" button and so whatever you did (while testing) didn't happen. And the result will be like where it was before you un-paused.

The piston inconvenience may be caused by the popit cursor: everything you select will stay frozen as long as you don't close the popit, that's why sometimes the pistons changes apply in real time and sometimes not

Emitters stop working when you fill your thermomether (this can happen lso in play mode, not only in create) and the item they spawn have a durability, that's why they disappear by themselves even if they're not made of dissolve

Anyway, the best thing to do in creating anything, is to create it in pause mode

Thanks for the advice
re emitters
The problem I seem to be having is that objects that have previously been used in emitters, still have a lifespan when used not in an emitter ie they just destruct after a while even though they have not been emitted but just placed into the world.
