Dealing with scorpions

Archive: 28 posts

Great, just great! (sarcastically)
Just when i thought this house was bad enough, a while ago i walk into the kitchen to grab something to eat, and what's the first thing i saw on the wall?
I freakin scorpion! :/
If the spiders + the bees + the red wasps weren't bad enough now i find a freakin scorpion...
Of course the one i saw was dealt with immediately, right now i'm really hoping that it was a single scorpion that somehow found its way inside and not a familly of scorpions moving in with us...

So just in case, i wanna ask.
Does anyone know how to deal with these arachnids?
Or if they like/ dislike cold? (If they dislike it i can just put the AC at max and keep these stingers out.)
So anyone who can help with this in any way?

Sorry Silver, once I saw a documentary from National Geographic that said that if the world gets nuke, spiders and scorpions will be the only survivors.2009-07-13 16:33:00

I think it depends on the kind of scorpion, but if there common where you live then there will probably be some sort of repellant at local hardware stores like ACE or home depot (im assuming you US if not you cant probably just disreguard this).

I belive i saw an add for a device that plugs into the wall and basically uses the elecrical systems of your home to make a barrier that stops most bugs, im not sure if something like that would help or not,

and omega you cant forget the cockroaches

In my experince - best way to deal with Scorpion is to use Sub-Zero.... get it? I know - lame joke.

Anyway - I'd recommend checking online to find out what kind it is and what sort of danger they pose (if any) to you. Depending on how common a problem it is - redmagus is probably correct in saying the local hardwars/lawncare store would have some chemical product to rid you of them or keep them at bay.

You know, most people don't realize it but Scorpions are actually harmless. They make great pets, and even enjoy having their back stroked. Try letting them smell your finger to get them used to you.2009-07-13 19:47:00

You are a scary man.

We don`t get scorpions over here, but if I did find one somewhere, after I`d destroyed it with a fury that would frighten Aries himself, I`d call my local pest control (our council does it for free) and see what they had to say about the chances of an infestation.

I would call an exterminator to get rid off all those nasties in your house. I don't know how you still live there, I have a phobia of all the things there.2009-07-13 21:06:00

We have a lot of scorpions in Texas. If you see one you usually tend to have more. They don't like cold and will slow down. Most bug sprays I've tried haven't worked. To me, any scorpion that comes in my house is soon to be a dead scorpion. One stung me a couple of years ago and after the bite area turned black and leathery, I started to go into central nervous system shutdown. So yes when I see them, my shoe takes care off it.2009-07-13 21:37:00

...or you could eat them. Kidding aside, i suggest you to identify the species, so that you know what to do in case you get stung, but you'll have to ask a pro or an anti-poison center to be really sure (i don't know how they are called in english, sorry =); the only thing i know about scorpions' habitat is that they seek humidity, and if your house is made f wood, you are most likely doomed; you could use sticky traps to get rid of them, but it's too cruel for a method imho - my parents used them on the mices that got in my house, i washed, fed a bit and let them go alive (yes, i care more about animals than humans; yes, i know i'm not normal)2009-07-13 22:41:00

lol, that's a good one actually
(And technically you CAN subdue scorpions with cold temperatures XD)

I looked online and i think it was a Bark Scorpion i saw.
Apparently their sting only hurts a lot, the pain lasts 5 - 20 mins can cause numbness and some other things...also might cause problems breathing and respiratory paralisys...
But apparently rarely lethal, and the ones most in danger are the small children, the elderly, and those allergic to bug stings.
Good thing its rere;y lethal. (I'm still keeping my AC at high )

That doesn't make it any easier as now i have to check clothes/ shoes before putting them on as apparently scorpions love to hang out in there...

@Ccubagge:
-_-
Are you trying to get me stung?

@Shadowheaven:
Actually they are edible, and it is said to eat the tail of the scorpion that stung you as it works as na antidote.

I don't have scorpions. I've never seen a scorpion before. I only have lots of spiders. And lots and lots of centipedes. There's one of my wall right now. I hate how centipedes can't walk on walls. They always fall off. Leave the gravity defying to the spiders, you knuckle heads!2009-07-15 10:46:00

I'm in scotland, no big scary scorpians or tarantulas.

I absalutly HATE insects and creepy crawlies, befor i go into my bedroom to sleep or anywhere i look around to see if theres any bugs.
2 nights ago there was this big black moth on my bathroom door like 5 feet away from my door.
I dont think i've ever EVER picked up something like a moth or butterfly (or catched it) with my hands,.

When ever i see a tiny tiny little moth i shout my mum to put it outside.

Are you serious? I can understand spiders and stuff, but moths and butterflies? I think they're ugly, despite how people say they're "beautiful", but I'm not scared of them.

1. Thats completky off topic.
2. Don't laugh at someone because they're affraid of something.
Some people's phobias might seem harmless or laughable to some people, but to them its no laughing matter, its not good to make fun of them either, just because ou're not affraid of that.
You might be affraid of something that everyone else thinks its ridiculous, would you ten like it if everyone made fun of you or teased you because you're affraid of it?

Errr.... silverleon I think that awesomemans comment wasn't meant to make fun of adam... that's why there's the at the end. It was just friendly banter

Also, it kinda is on topic since we're talking about scary bugs! But I suppose we're really supposed to be talking about scorpions... I dunno... A topic can expand a little I think.

Anyways, we shouldn't discuss this here cause that's off topic too

The closest thing I've seen to a scorpion is a lizard (outside of the zoo at least). Lizards are pretty cool though... not nearly as scary I imagine!

I hate spiders and centipedes and ants and all those things though. I don't like to kill them though, so I try to catch them under a cup

EDIT: Woah, it's like a wall of 's

I'm afraid of nothing!

I didn't really mean to sound like an *******, you can imagine that I don't think before I post anything. I wasn't really making fun of him being afraid of moths and butterflies. Moths are ugly.

Btw, you live in Australia, right? Doesn't everything try to kill you there?

Yeah I have a phobia of moths now . One that I touched (through a cloth!) actually made me bleed, very spikey for some reason.

For scorpions just stamp on em, but make sure it's with a good shoe; don't wanna get spiked on the way down.

Ouch, Arizona ain't cuttin' you much slack, huh?
Scorpions... gawd, they scare the ish out of me. Especially North America's most posionous one (in your case). Tell me, did it look like this?:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d3/Bark_scorpion.JPG
If so, you may have a serious problem on your hands. Put draft guards on all of your doors, close your windows securely when not in use, and occasionally sweep around your house with a blacklight (UVA recommended) at night. These scorpions' stings can lead to severe damages if not treated. The best way I'd get rid of one is to capture it with the old box-and-stick trick, sweep it into a bag (not plastic, mind you), and release it into some wooded area. Oh, and if you sleep on an elevated bed (on legs), then you're good. If not, then let's hope you ain't goin' to wake to some scorpion in your pajamas.

And I'm not joking on the box-and-stick trap. It does work.

Well, in the UK we don't get any big scorpions, tarantlas and all that stuff. At least that I know of. If I were you, I'd try to trap the scorpion (I think something like the box with a stick trap would do, as already suggested) and then release it somewhere FAR away from your house, so there will be little chance it comes back.2009-07-19 21:08:00
