I played this level last night and I was thinking to myself "Wow I wish more levels were as deep and well thought out as this!" The first thing I noticed is that the art direction is superb the fairy lighting with the green overcast is awesome. This level didn't even seem like a lbp level more like an rpg vibe with information being divulged by the many characters throughout. The dark shadow people and the sneaking element were also really well done. This level was perfection to me in every way and I cant wait to see more I hearted your level and you as an author! : )2009-07-13 07:00:00

Hey PoorJack! I'm very impressed with your levels. I'd like to post a little review now, if you don't mind...

No? Of course not! And I'd do it anyways *ahem*

Story:
Mythicos 2 has a very interesting storyline, but some players would be left confused if they have not played the first Mythicos level. That aside, the Story is a typical love story, but I love the twist it take when you plot to kill the Goblin leader, rather than rescue your fiance and run off. It really sucks you in, as if it were a game all its own. Splitting up the "Mother Tree" into two halves (Goblin and Elf) made for a great ideal conflict that you see very easily between the two, making the level feel even more like it's own game.

Mechanics: The workings of the game are amazing, and it obviously took a long time to figure and put together. The thing that impressed me the most about the mechanics was how certain actions in the level would unlocked only after a certain event was fulfilled. IE, You have to talk to Father Vincent in order to travel to the Goblin District, while if you had tried in the beginning of the level, You'd remind yourself you're not allowed. One thing that made me smile was later in the level, if you chose to drop down a hole in the Goblin District, and step past the checkpoint, a lift would spring you up and destroy an existing architectural element, and take its place like nothing happened.

Gameplay: Gameplay is fluid and fun. The world set up in the background really sets the theme for the entire level, and keeps it constant. I enjoyed climbing underneath the broken bridge, via moss, as well as the sneaking element you put into entering the other side of the level. It was a big step forward from the last level, which lacked a lot of assets that players have come to know and love. However, the level does put in a couple of new obstacles that I hope to see in the second part of the series. The only thing I missed, was the shops in the first installment. There's plenty of secrets in the level that really offer replay value, and it's definitely a level I would play online with friends.

Detail: Detail is amazing. From the Monster-Pack background to the foggy glow to the ever-constant "Mother Tree" feel, Mythicos 2 really puts you into the level. Of course I go back to the Goblin District, saying the Brick detail on the walls, as well as the impressive architectural work put into the bridges and hallways that lead you into the heart of the Goblin's mysterious and gloomy town. It must have been in how the Shadow Guards roar when they're killed, but the sounds also keep Mythicos enchantingly fun.

Challenge: Well, if you've made it past The Islands in Story mode, you'll find this level quite easy and enjoyable. Some less experienced players may have a bit of trouble getting past the Shadow Guards, but with infinite lives, it's very easy to get the hang of the spotlight movements.

Rating: Overall, I give Mythicos 2: Symphony of Sorrow a 5/5! The level itself is phenomenal in almost every way. So keep up the good work PoorJack, and I look forward to playing the Second Part soon!

I played this one last night and the art direction is fantastic. Subtle lighting and great use of materials along with impressive architecture make this level stand out from a visual point of view. The shadow characters are cool and I love the distinction between the tree and the stone environments.

Characters are cute and the dialogue is good. It's a deep story it seems that is slowly unfolding. I think RPG and story driven level players will love.

The platforming is minimal. A few jumps, some swinging (the moss covered arches is the best part of the platforming), a few baddies and some lights to avoid. Nothing terribly taxing for moderate skilled players but it's a good level for the mainstream LBP player. My only complaint is there isn't more of it. I can tell you got burned on the thermo from the visuals (I often do as well) and that the length of the level suffers for it. In my opinion you could easily take this level series from mere eye candy to a great all around level if you could include a little more to do and a little less to look at but that's just my opinion. I do love the level as it is from a visual standpoint and your sconces and arches are some of the best I've seen in LBP. The only other nitpicky points I have are that you still have long stretches of walkthough areas with nothing to do or bubbles or platforming and that when your talking to the elf on the far left side of the level the lighting shifts from that lovely dark forest green cast to black and white. I think you put it in for dramatic effect but in my opinion it doesn't add to the story and seems a bit out of place.

All this said I still rate it 5 stars and think it's a fantastic level full of wonderful landscape design and lighting. Thanks for continuing the series. I'm looking forward to #3.

Ah, my favorite time of the review. Suggestion time!

What I'd love to see in the next level is something along the lines of using Blood Butterfly members to help you along the level. Something like fulfilling a request to get farther...or bringing them somewhere... or killing someone.

I'd like to actually fight a goblin x3

Oh! And like you did in that one area (my favorite) where the lift brings you up to replace an architectural detail and take its place... I'd LOVE to see more of that.

More hang-swings obstacles.

Uhh... Waterfalls? xD

I'm running out of ideas. If I think of anything that would be cool to add to your level, I'll speak up again. :3 I really hope to see the next level published soon. I'm getting tired of playing the level over again. xD

Ah yes, the art and atmosphere in this level are amazing, very well done. Interesting story too.
It would be nice to have a bit more for the player to do though, there weren't really any challenges. And there was perhaps a little bit too much text to digest at times.

I was hoping for some excitement at some point but it never happened. It's a shame with such a great level of detail.
I gave it four stars :star::star::star::star:, it has some great potential to be one of the best levels out there.

I played this last night, and thought the art and subject were beautiful. That being said, I had a few suggestions:

At the beginning it "feels" like medieval subject matter with elves, which is VERY cool - even the church was designed well. However, some things about the level made me lose some of the immersion. For instance, when you suddenly have "spotlights" - it's nice to have an additional challenge, but couldn't it be "gargoyle eyes" or something instead of calling them "spotlights"? I suddenly felt like I was in an MGS game.

Also, near the end when you suddenly say something like "sorry.... that's it for now because there's no more room" - I would much rather have seen something like "To be continued in part 2". It would be like reading the "Fellowship of the ring" and suddenly having the author say "Whoa, hey! That's it for now".

I personally think that a narrative-based level works well if done to the quality of a book - if that's the kind of level it's trying to be, so I disagree with "too much text, not enough platforming" for this KIND of level.

Regardless, I loved the level and I think you're a really talented artist, but with a bit more immersion and staying to the theme I think this could be a GREAT level series. I gave it 5 stars simply for the art direction. Great job!

I played Pts 1 & 2 and like most, i thought the design and detailing on the architecture was super, and the lighting was beautifully done, i really like the slightly washed out look to it all. A well told tale so far, i certainly wasn't expecting the level to end the way you did it. Not too much in the way of challenge but it wasn't a problem for me, i enjoyed it regardless. Pt 3 will be on my 'play' list when you publish. : )2009-09-08 00:19:00

This level was fun to see and play from the perspective of seeing where the story goes and to look at the different locations.

This is definitely an improvement over the first Mythicos level and I can see that you've gotten a better handle on the pesky camera zones from the first level.

It seems like there is a lot of improvements in this level with better set design, locations and pacing.

I enjoy your continuation of the multi-play enhancements for those who want to get something new out of a second play.

You've got a good contrast from the organic greens of the elven sector and the stark, gray lines of the goblin sector. You've done a good job showing the aging of the structures as well as putting in a variety of run/jump segments.

The difficulty of the level isn't very high and I was surprised by the spotlight sneaking sections. There were more than a few times when I was sure that I'd trigger the spotlight but didn't. Maybe they have a very small sense field but these sections were fairly easy to just run through.

I was really wondering where all of the goblins went to though. I saw one sleeping goblin and a few shadow guard but otherwise the whole place was empty. Not only that but the rebel group seem to walk around freely and have their clubhouse right in the down town section of the goblin district. Huh?

Speaking of odd things, the protagonist is able to become engaged to the princess at the end of the first level. Now a few hundred years later in the second level the protagonist still refers to the princess as, 'my fiancee'.

Wow? Being engaged for a few hundred years? There are a lot of comments in my head I could put down but they'd all be tangential and not very witty but, wow, that is a long time to be engaged.

I think that if you look at Mythicos 2 part 1 and 2 as a single set then they hold up well as a complete package but as a standalone level it was more of a fun exploration level with a little bit of story and platforming thrown in.

Either way, this level looks great, has some good elements and is worth the time to play.

Cheers.

well, the reason for the long engagement is that immediately after leo killed the queen tree guardian, the goblins come up out of the trees protected core and over run the elves, and make them slaves. thats why he and rose arent wed yet. and the one goblin guard sleeping is a reference to goblins beinhg somewhat alzy, durnal creatures that are out during day time, and rely mostly on shadowguards for protection. thanks for the close scrutiny tho. i always liek being tested on my logic. 2009-09-12 02:58:00
