Brain Chain Mini-Game Community Contestcomphermc http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/2976/aphoto.jpg"Give your jump button a break and survive by stomping some creature brains. This level is very difficult, intended for ONE PLAYER ONLY, and can be very addicting. It gets progressively harder - how long can you last?" all CONTEST OVER - THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR PARTICIPATING! Hey guys, I'm very happy to present everyone with my first ever community contest. This level is very difficult, but it is master-able, so I figured it would be a good contest level. I will be giving out xp for this contest. There will be rewards handed out for the top 4 places, as such: 1st Place: 300 xp 2nd Place: 200 xp 3rd Place: 100 xp Honorable mention: 50 xp In the event of a tie, all persons with an identical score will be rewarded the equal division of their average potential award. In the event of players maxing out the scoreboard (i.e. 1,000,000 points posted), the player who reaches the mark first will be awarded first place. Each consecutive player to reach that mark will be awarded the next highest place in the contest. The contest will end at 10:00 PM EST (3:00 AM GMT) on Saturday, July 25th or if ever 4 scores of 1,000,000 have been posted. The prizes will be awarded when the contest ends. This gives you exactly 2 weeks to polish your brain stomping skills. How to Play I have published a special version of the level that is only playable by those participating in the Brain Chain Mini-Game Community Contest. To access the special version, find the level on my littlebigplanet titled "Key room for LBPC contest." This level contains a key to the contest level, which only needs to be obtained once. To access the key room enter the following code: 6 5 4 6 5 4. Follow the directions in the level, and you are on your way to beginning the challenge. I wish you all the best of luck - you are going to need it. If i post a score of 0, am i top on the leaderboard? ;p Seriously though, i'll have to give this a go later. | 2009-07-12 06:56:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |
How many scores can you publish? If only one that disregard the spoiler. If more than Open it! My Current score: 6111 | 2009-07-12 06:56:00 Author: Sage Posts: 2068 |
Comphermic, I get why you made a new level for this, but you do realise that this will seriously affect the number of plays on your main level. Anyway, I'm in, turns out I had slightly more patience than I thought yesterday, especially since I found out a neat little trick that helps mahoosively edit - Current rankings: Shadowheaven - 238,329 rtm223 - 72,817 MDJR2k7 - 6,111 | 2009-07-12 09:21:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Thanks comphermc, I do love a contest, especially with prizes for the top three. But could someone do me a favour and explain exactly what this xp thing is? Either that or post a link to a thread that does, I can't find anything on it. Cheers. | 2009-07-12 10:14:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
Thanks for participating everyone. @Sage - you can play as many times as you like. This level will function like any normal level except that the top 3 scores will be given xp points as a reward. In fact, it would be unfair to let you play only once because if someone beats your score, then you have no way of re-gaining the lead. @rtm - yeah, I'm not so concerned about the number of plays. This level was made to be fun. I'm not chasing the share trophy or anything (by the way, I'll H4H if you want... ). Besides, my key level has had over 5,000 plays - I have lost all faith in humanity, but it's got me more plays than I need. @LieutenantFatman - I explained the xp on your visitor page. Happy stomping, everyone. Edit: Holy crap Shadowheaven. You smoked it: ~655,000 !? | 2009-07-12 13:43:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Thanks for the explanation comphermc! Sounds groovy. Right, now that my 'net is no longer on the blink, I shall give this a try, and hope for 2nd place, lol. Well done to Shadowheaven. | 2009-07-12 14:45:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
Hey this looks fun - i'm gunna try my best! | 2009-07-12 18:25:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |
Hehe, looks like the competition is for 3rd place mostly, 1st and second are little far ahead. My poor sack's hooves are very tired from a-stomping on creature brains today. You and your addictive level | 2009-07-12 21:13:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I got... 50,000 something, no idea I was supposed to tell you here, someone else can I guess >_<. ... but... when the music gets pumped up and the lasers and falling point bubbles fall... That's when I know THIS is what a survival level should be. Pure. awesome. | 2009-07-12 21:19:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |

kufufufu... and i died because my controlled slipped when i sneezed Excuses are the nails in the house of failure... *right that down* No, but that's one fine score you posted. Was it too easy after a while? I was worried it was going to be, but I have little faith anyone will reach the million point threshhold. Maybe I should add a timer to the levels that freezes when you die, takes a photo, and then ends the level - that way we can see who lasted the longest, lol. Another project, maybe. @Rock - don't worry about telling me, I go in myself and write down the scores. | 2009-07-12 21:42:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I'll come back for another go at 1st at some point in the next few days! After a while I get really nervous on these survival challenges. "Must... not... die... oh my God, nooooooo, aaaaaaaaaargh!" | 2009-07-12 22:43:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
ah, ok, but it must not be right... You should check again, caus eI got 50k soon after. CHECK AGAIN AH! | 2009-07-12 22:49:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
Wow, those top 3 scores are high! I'm going to have to play this level a lot to get up there! | 2009-07-12 23:50:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
Don't worry everyone, the leaderboard has been updated. I'm not a machine! You guys are posting some pretty nice scores - When I first made the level, I didn't think it was possible to go above 50,000...you guys are sure proving me wrong. I had to add stages onto the end! Anyone besides Shadowheaven or LieutenantFatman get to the laser light show stage yet? | 2009-07-13 03:16:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Believe me or not, i noticed that stage only the first time i reached it: usually i'm so concentrated that i ignore everything that's not blue (otherwise i'd die before the 2nd stage :< ) Scoring 1m is possible, but it's simply too hard to achieve | 2009-07-13 06:38:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
Well I posted nearly 300,000 yesterday. I didn't get past the third stage, with the roof spikes moving up and down. What sort of score would we be expecting to get to the laser show? | 2009-07-13 10:18:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
This is the best survival challange/mini game ever!!! I'm going back on now to try and get a higher score. Nice work! You say give the 'X' button a rest, but my restart button is dying | 2009-07-13 14:08:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |
Hm. Just so you know, you have Sage listed twice- MDJR-whatever is his PSN. I guess it DID upload. | 2009-07-13 14:27:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
Thanks, Rock. I didn't realize that he was the same person, lol. I was confused how they managed to get the same score. It's fix'd now. | 2009-07-13 15:27:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I'm up to 200,000 something Its so addictive! | 2009-07-13 16:17:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |
Wait, do we have to play the version thats unlocked from your key level?Or can i post my score on your regular public level? | 2009-07-13 21:41:00 Author: Jrange378 Posts: 573 |
Wait, do we have to play the version thats unlocked from your key level?Or can i post my score on your regular public level? Locked version is for the contest. And I'm going to be making a dent on that board soon enough, just watch. | 2009-07-13 22:09:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
UGGGH, i dont know if i can get as high as i did on the publc one | 2009-07-14 03:17:00 Author: Jrange378 Posts: 573 |
UGGGH, i dont know if i can get as high as i did on the publc one Ha ha, you'll get better with time. Anyways, I've added your score to the leaderboard (w00t, tenth place!). They are the exact same level, I just published the locked version so that it would easier to record all the LBPC scores. The scores are updated as of 1:00 AM EST. If there are any mistakes let me know. I'm pretty impressed with the scores that you all have posted - and it's only two days in. You all better not let Shadowheaven win this thing on day one! | 2009-07-14 05:59:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
just did a bit better than my score of 0 currently number 10 on the leaderboard EDIT: DANGIT I guess not! ... only got to the green lights stage Doh! | 2009-07-14 06:00:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |
Does your score beat Jrange's? Eh, I'll go look for myself. Be back in a few... Edit: lol. EDIT WAR! Yeah, he got you. | 2009-07-14 06:01:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Someone's blates gonna reach the million on this. Don't think it'll be me... apart from a couple of lucky (I'd like to say focussed, but it would be a lie) runs, I struggle to get past the 100K barrier. | 2009-07-14 09:01:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I just reached 1m EDIT: added a themed avatar xD | 2009-07-14 10:24:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
Woop woop! Did you actually get a million or did you lose points for dying? | 2009-07-14 10:37:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
i got 1m score, even if i died (i had 100x multiplier, so i was probably on about 1.135.000 points +) Who's the best now? HUH? | 2009-07-14 11:27:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
So it's 1m on the scoreboard, I was hoping it penalised you after doing the multiplier, so it'd cap you at 1m then the actual recorded score would be below. You'd have to do the survival challenge aceing trick to actually get 1m recorded. That would have probably given you an extra day's play out of the level And I'm pretty sure you have been best all along mate | 2009-07-14 11:43:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I guess it's over if you lose the multiplier after you score 1m... or maybe the extra points you earn are considered somehow... i don't know, but i didn't use the aceing trick, to me it would feel like cheating | 2009-07-14 12:07:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
I take your point, but if it were impossible to get 1 mil without it, then I wouldn't call it cheating. Plus you'd have to position your sackboy so he could survive a couple of seconds with no control at all, there's gotta be some skill in that Well congratulations anyway, I suppose this contest is going to be a first 3 to 1 million points now.... | 2009-07-14 12:24:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
How about some xp for 4th place? These scores are getting impossible to beat. | 2009-07-14 12:28:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |
Holy crap. I thought it might be possible but I didn't think it would happen. Nice work Shadowheaven. Since you've destroyed the level, I'll present you with a copy of the level when the contest is over that you can do whatever you want with (I don't care if you make changes and republish as your own - anyone with 1M will get the same). I guess this contest will become a race for the first 3 to a million, assuming 3 people make it. I will have to modify the official rules, but congrats on first place Shadowheaven. How long were you playing for!? Edit: The OP has been fixed to account for players reaching 1M. The first 3 to do so will automatically win the top 3 places in the order that they are achieved, and the contest will end. How about some xp for 4th place? These scores are getting impossible to beat. The xp amounts were decided before the contest, so I can make no promises here. | 2009-07-14 13:59:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
As soon as i'll get that level copy, i'll make a hidden sticker switch that spawns a jetpack and i'll edit the emitters so that they emit plasma balls instead of point bubbles and paint bullets instead of brains Anyway, i played it for about 40 minutes for the first time (playing and surviving randomly) and 30 minutes this morning (most of the time i was figuring out the logic behind it, then i did it at the 4th try) the only way to get to 1m is to figure out all of the level mechanics, wich i did completely only this morning, so that you can survive pratically forever by forcing on yourself some "rules". You don't need to be geniuses, fyi i was going to ask comphermc how he managed to make the entrance disappear in that way; i figured it out only while i was writing him a pm  ...or you could have a lot of survival instinct and survive long enough to get an high score Good luck, everyone! | 2009-07-14 14:23:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
As soon as i'll get that level copy, i'll make a hidden sticker switch that spawns a jetpack and i'll edit the emitters so that they emit plasma balls instead of point bubbles and paint bullets instead of brains Lol, nice - I had a jetpack in for testing, but took it out before releasing. Maybe I'll make an extreme version of the level that's **** near impossible, and the only way to get into it is to survive until the final stage of this version... Anyway, i played it for about 40 minutes for the first time (playing and surviving randomly) and 30 minutes this morning (most of the time i was figuring out the logic behind it, then i did it at the 4th try) I meant how long does it take surviving to get 1M. I have gotten 550,000 before on the public version and it seemed like it went on for about 5 min - I can't imagine 1M takes much longer as your multiplier is constantly growing. the only way to get to 1m is to figure out all of the level mechanics, wich i did completely only this morning, so that you can survive pratically forever by forcing on yourself some "rules". I'd like to know what your rules are. PM me - I think I know what you mean, but I'm curious. I know what you mean about surviving forever, I just lack the manual dexterity to pull it off, ha ha. fyi i was going to ask comphermc how he managed to make the entrance disappear in that way; i figured it out only while i was writing him a pm  For anyone else who is curious, it's pretty simple to do. The idea is to capture a start gate, and emit it with a short lifetime (2-3) seconds. Emit the thing, then pause immediately. Capture the emitted start gate while paused. Now, when you place it, it will only have a lifetime of about 1 seconds when you enter the level. Note: it can only be placed in pause mode, as it will disappear before you can place it. To add additional elements, I stuck a thin piece of dark matter behind mine, so it wasn't sitting on the floor, and I added a sound item that is set to play on destruction. | 2009-07-14 15:01:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I can't really tell, but i guess it's about 3 or 4 minutes after the last level starts (the flashy disturbing, distracting lights; oh, how do i hate them!) | 2009-07-14 15:31:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
comphermc... you should've added like another stage where it's like REALLY getting hard :/ (not that i can make it to 1,000,000 >_>) | 2009-07-14 16:01:00 Author: Yarbone Posts: 3036 |
about that contest does the winner also get the code to your next secret level or you just working on it | 2009-07-14 17:51:00 Author: logmanxyz Posts: 1 |

Nice work you guys! It looks like it's now a battle for third and fourth place - literally. How long did you last past 1M Leather-Monkeys? Was it pretty easy after a while? Nice Score Rock - but what do you need the xp for!? Or are you just looking for that free copyable level? | 2009-07-14 21:04:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Uhh I waited a while but then I realised I couldn't stop the multiplier to get more points - so I just killed myself. If I tried I probably could have lasted a lot longer... | 2009-07-14 21:05:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |

Wow, 3 people already!? I wonder who'll get that last spot? Since this contest is ending pretty quickly (or it seems), the offer to get a free copy of the level stands for anyone who can get 1,000,000 before the original contest deadline. As it stands now, the first 3 places have been decided, but 4th place (honorable mention) is still wide open. Rock has the advantage, but all it takes is one more great run to end this thing. | 2009-07-15 02:06:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

I feel like it's my fault, as soon as i got the 1m score people started to rush xD | 2009-07-15 14:13:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
I said this would happen. I hope in the future you have this contest again, but make it even harder so that 1m is nearly impossible. Because we won't know who is truly the best until we have a level where people can't "max out" but instead, they lose at their true limitations. Side note: I'm playing this like a fiend, you probably have 100 plays from me alone. I want to get 1,000,000, contest or no contest. | 2009-07-15 14:19:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
True, but I was more fun that way, like a race to the finish! | 2009-07-15 14:24:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |
Lol, hope you get it. I was surprised that 1M was possible, quite honestly. It's hard to test for a survival challenge when I can't make it as far as you guys, ha ha. I would've never known 1M was possible had I not made this contest. I had fun organizing/making this contest, though. Would everyone here be interested if I did another one when this was all said and done? Obviously a new challenge - or maybe just a re-thinking of this one. I haven't made anything yet, but I'd like to see who's interested before I start it. Obviously, I would have to make it much deeper, so it gets very hard after a while. Would you all participate again? | 2009-07-15 14:26:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Definitely! As long as the prize is worth the effort though. | 2009-07-15 14:33:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |

Well, to be honest, this level was more of a concept than anything. I never intended to publish this version, but I polished it up and it wasn't half bad. From conception to working model was about 4 hours (all in one morning). I spent several hours tweaking over the next day or so, adding in the last couple of stages. In all, it took less than 48 hours to go from blank level to published level. I'm not trying to brag about it, lol (if anything, it's depressing how much time in those 48 hours I spent on it), I'm just saying that if I make another version, it would have quite a bit more time spent on making the stages challenging and have a reasonable progression. I'll work on little stuff and see what I come up with over the next week... | 2009-07-15 14:45:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I love a good contest, I'd be keen to take part, but I'd make it so it's almost impossible to make it even to the half million mark if I were you, just to be sure. | 2009-07-15 18:45:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |

For example, make the emitters slowly emit less and less, making it more about sustaining a combo using point bubbles or about timing. You could add in new, more difficult hazards, or even just background distractions. Actually that reminds me, this level would benefit from use of the global lighting object to signal stage changes. | 2009-07-16 13:32:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |

It would be better if 4 people with 1 million should just get 1st place. By the way, do you know our score by the scoreboards? -Edit- Wait it's done? I didn't even get to play. | 2009-07-16 14:20:00 Author: Unknown User |
I guess it's over then. I will verify in a bit (not that I don't trust you). You four will get the xp prizes and a key to a copyable version of the level, but anyone else who decides to go for a million will be awarded the key if you get it before the original contest deadline. If you do it, PM me so it doesn't go unnoticed. You'll be happy to know that I have at least opened the editor to work on a harder version (with a much different theme). It may be a while before it's done, but it's coming... By the way, do you know our score by the scoreboards? Yes. I made a separate level so it'd be easier to keep track of the leaderboard. Wait it's done? I didn't even get to play. Sorry, you can still play the level, but it'd be just for pride. | 2009-07-16 14:36:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

Cool! A toast to comphermc for his awesomeness! A toast to all of the great creators on LBPC and yonder for all of their amazing contributions to our own LittleBigPlanet. Without them, we'd probably not be playing anymore. | 2009-07-16 14:42:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |

It's like a Bounce House.. right? | 2009-07-16 14:44:00 Author: Unknown User |
Ugh, okay. I'll play it for "pride," the game sounds interesting too. It's like a Bounce House.. right? You'll understand when you play it, but basically little creature brains shoot up from the floor and you survive by bouncing off of them. The longer you survive, the harder it becomes. | 2009-07-16 14:54:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
And it's freakin' awesome. Play it for fun! Also, expect to spend several hours playing it | 2009-07-16 14:58:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |

It is a survival challenge! | 2009-07-16 15:02:00 Author: Leather-Monkey Posts: 2266 |
Alright, the first page has been updated with winners, etc. The top 4 should expect to be receiving your xp shortly. It has to be done manually, so be patient. I will also be publishing a locked copyable version that you guys will be receiving the keys to soon. Expect a PM. Congrats again to all the winners. You guys as a whole racked up an astounding 2,760 plays in four and half days, which is unheard of for a locked level. I had fun making this and holding the contest, so I may do it again in the future - I'll make it harder this time. | 2009-07-16 15:21:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
You guys as a whole racked up an astounding 2,760 plays in four and half days, which is unheard of for a locked level. I'm going to give you a simple formula here which will hopefully explain the reason for so many plays. It's quite simple really: ((a^(b+(c-d)))*(e^0.975))+x=f a = Survival Challenge b = Addictiveness factor c = Amount of promotion/forum exposure d = % of plays lost from locked status e = Days published f = Plays x = Random number between 1-25 to simulate "Quick Plays" As you can see, a survival challenge's plays increase exponentially based on it's addictiveness factor and it's level of promotion (very high in this case because it is a contest). The locked status does negatively impact this multiplier, but the addictiveness factor normally will balance this hindrance out in a well-made level. I added extra parentheses despite the natural order of operations to show how different factors affect one another. The first part of the equation, up to "d", is the play calculation for a single day, multiplied by how many days it was published to the power of a slight degradation factor. This equation would also reflect exposure to Cool Levels pages, but it was locked so that factor was removed. x factors in the chances of getting a minimal number of plays through Quick Play, despite its locked status. So there you have it, that equation explains the insane success of this level. (This equation is completely fictional and should not be taken seriously under any circumstances.) | 2009-07-16 18:11:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |

Ha ha, the logic is undeniable! | 2009-07-16 19:43:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I tried it, it was fun. I sucked so bad, my highest score is 533. LOL. | 2009-07-16 20:00:00 Author: Unknown User |
I tried it, it was fun. I sucked so bad, my highest score is 533. LOL. then you have NO idea how fun it is. It's only fun until you get to the five figure digits . THEN it's awesomeness personified. | 2009-07-16 20:02:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
awesomeness personified. Wouldn't that just be Awesomemans, a member of this very forum? On topic: Leonardo, just keep playing it, I found myself dying after only one or two hits in the beginning, but I eventually worked my way up to scores of 10,000+. While that is nowhere near the 1,000,000 that people are getting, it shows that practice makes...you better. dude... that's awesome xD like O_o Ha ha, the logic is undeniable! Thanks, though after I wrote it, I realized I had just wasted a full 25 minutes of my life creating a totally nonsensical math equation. It was definitely worth it though. | 2009-07-16 20:04:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
.... at first i was like... o___o HOW am i going to survive this. But it's pretty easy if you learn it. EDIT: well akshully you CAN'T survive it xD lol | 2009-07-16 20:05:00 Author: Yarbone Posts: 3036 |
