PS3 80GB Random BluRay Slowdown

Archive: 11 posts

As much as I like LBP Im about ready to ditch the Sony PS3 all together. I just had a 20gb die. My daughters 80GB recently started messing up during bluray movie playback. The movies starts to play really slow, a very slideshow type appearance and then will clear up. Now this not the same as the issue that alot complain about concerning panning scenes. Its a definite drop of information and as stated happens even on non panning scenes with very little action on the screen. One example would be grumpy old men with a still scene and a character just turning towards the camera.

I had not noticed this prior to the 2.70 update. I noticed right before doing the 2.80 and it continued after the 2.80.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Strange.... I haven't had practically a single glitch in Bluray playback in a LONG time (about a year) and I use it to watch movies several times a week. I have one of the original 60GB models.

a) Is the Grumpy old men a Bluray or a DVD, and b) if it's a Bluray, why would you have Grumpy Old Men on Bluray, and c) Is your daughter REALLY into that kind of movie?

I need to know.... this is science!

Ok, seriously - does it consistently do it in specific areas of the disc?

I have not had any bluray issues until this. We watch probably 2 bluray movies per day. Grumpy Old Men is on Bluray. I have it on Bluray because its an awesome movie and looks better than the DVD (except the slowdowns) Yes she loves the movie and has already asked if Grumpier Old Men is out on Bluray yet.

It happens randomly. It might happen at point XX but rewind it back to that same spot and it wont do it again in that spot. Im going to try and video tape it and put it on my youtube site. Its on all bluray movies. My 20GB never did this but then it died before doing the latest updates.

Nope.. we just watched a few the other day and worked perfectly. Prying LBP out was the only tough part of the process.

Just a thought, but maybe the lens is dirty or just dusty enough to cause intermittent rereads? That might explain the slide show affect you are seeing at times.

I'll pop on a bluray today and see if I have an issue. When exactly did that update come out?2009-07-12 13:49:00

Looks like it might be a combination of the PS3 and the display its on. It had never done this prior to 2.70 as I stated. We hooked the PS3 to the Samsung 61" and watched the whole movie without incident. Put the PS3 back on the LG 26" and we get the random slowdowns. We just bought a Samsung BD P3600 standalone player to step up and away from the PS3 anyway so to test it further, I put the new Samsung player on the LG 26" and had no problem there. So something around the 2.70 update has made the PS3 and LG 26" not like eachother.

Anyway its all cool now. We have replaced the PS3 with the 3600 as our bluray player on the 61" and will get a slightly lower end model Samsung for the smaller TV. The PS3 will be used strictly for gaming till it dies.

To put some more logic in there, if it was your PS3, it would happen on ANY set it's plugged in. So it's not your PS3.

The only thing I can see here is that there's a compatibility issue or issue with your LG set, that is in my opinion, an horribly bad brand.

Interesting... I wonder if you would have the same problem hooking the PS3 to the LG differently. If you're plugging it in using HDMI the PS3 may now be using an updated firmware version of the HDMI that's having a problem with the TV.

Maybe, just for grins, try hooking it up through component cable and see if it acts differently (if it's hooked up HDMI right now)

No thats not necessarily true. In that case I could say that if it were the LG display, it would happen no matter what Bluray player I was using on the LG. The Samsung BD player, PC Bluray, Laptop Bluray and my PS3 prior to 2.70 all play without this problem on the LG. So whatever was changed on the PS3 could easily be at fault and is probably the case.

I agree the LG is not a great brand.. probably right there with Sony in terms of reliability.

I'm not sure whether you saw it, but I mentioned the HDMI. The reason is that my Bose system was having a hard time decoding the HDMI from the PS3 until I did a firmware update to the Bose system. Just mentioning it - if you plug it in through component cables or RCA jacks you would be bypassing the HDMI decoding. Could be a clue.2009-07-12 18:44:00

I've sent in my ps3 twice now for blu-ray reading issues. I'm pretty sure it isn't related to the update. Luckily I think the problem has been fixed.(It's probably about due for a serious meltdown though)

So, I know how you feel man. It's extremely frustrating.
