Horror games

Does anyone here play horror or survival-horror games, like Resident Evil or Silent Hill? I'm trying to get into the genre myself, but it's hard since I'm not 17 yet, so I can't just go out and buy them (just wait 'till September comes, though...) Anyway, I just thought I'd see if there's anyone out there who's into these kinda games. I mean, with all the horror levels on LBP, there's gotta be someone here who likes horror games, right?2009-07-11 21:14:00

I've played and enjoyed quite a few Horror games, but never felt they were actually scary, they just make you jump a little.2009-07-11 21:28:00

Oh man, you have to play Resident Evil 4. One of the best games of all time, absolutely love it to bits. Most places give it 10/10, and it is very much deserved. 2009-07-11 22:55:00

I've actually heard that RE4 is more an action type game as opposed to survival/horror. I asked about in the RE4 forums on GameFAQs and they recommended earlier RE games or Silent Hill, so...2009-07-12 01:20:00

It's hard for something that's a horror movie or game to scare me, to be honest. Scariest game I've played was Fatal Frame II.

RE4 isn't scary, but it's a good game.

Penumbra: Overture

Scariest game. Ever. (Only played the demo though, but I would have bought the whole game )

And there is also a new one, Penumbra: Black Plague I think

You can get it from Steam

Everyone do yourself a favor and listen to this man. I've actually been unsettled by Penumbra Overture so much that I cannot play it for more than five minutes. This is coming from someone who's never been creeped out by Silent Hill and never jumped once during FEAR. (mostly because FEAR sux lol)

but srsly, there's nothing like trying to sneak by a rabid zombie dog with a ginormous barrel of TNT in an extremely dark underground mine cave and the only thing you have to defend yourself with is an effing broom.

The original Silent Hill really freaked me out the first time I played it. There were many times when I had to put the joypad down and take a break because it was getting too intense. Fighting a posessed Cybil on the carousel left me full of the jitters, although the magic mushrooms I'd eaten probably didn't help.

Also, if you fancy a nice blend of paranoia, blind panic and perverse fascination then I highly recommend Haunting Ground (Demento). It honestly scared the bejesus out me. You play a young girl trapped in a strange castle that is inhabited by four freakish characters who are keen to get their hands on you. They wander from room to room searching for you (in real time), and if they see you then they're gonna do their best to kill you (or worse). You can't really fight them, but your faithful dog Hewie might just keep them distracted long enough for you to escape or find a place to hide if you're lucky. You basically have to avoid these guys like the plague as you unlock the castle's secrets. Anyway, you could probably pick up this PS2 title dirt cheap now...it's well worth a play.

TLDR: The Project Zero/Fatal Frame series is excellent.

I would have to say the best in the horror genre I have seen is the much over looked in the West "Project Zero" (or Fatal Frame, depending on where you are). The original is a PS2 game, which has had 2 sequels on that system. The first one was absolutely incredible. It's quite different to many of the other horror games that I know in that it works very hard at getting your mind to race ahead of itself. In my opinion the best horror is not the ones which show the most gore and blood that they can on screen, with the occassional loud bang to frighten the auidence. The Saw and Hostel series are probably the most well known modern examples of these. I haven't seen them personally, but from what I have heard they focus on gore rather than terror to scare.

The best horror leaves the terrifying things off screen. In stead of showing someone being attacked, you could show the shadow of someone being attacked on a wall you are looking at. Or the sounds of it through the wall. The more that is left to the imagination rather than shown on screen the better, as what is truly horrifying is not what we see, but what we think we see.

A more "western" and popular version of this type of horror is the original "Alien" film (the one with Sigorney Weaver which lead to several sequels and the now current "Aliens vs. Predator" series. In the very first film though, the Alien was unknown. You hardly saw it at all for the first half of the film. But you would see it's shadow, or a quick flash of it running past in the background, or hear it attacking off screen. It was only near the end of the film that the alien was shown in all it's horror. This lead to a far more scary experience, as the audiences mind would piece things together for a far more scarier effect than if blood and gore were thrown around the screen.

That's good horror. One that makes you imagine and think and jump to terrifying conclusions.

Anyway, back to Video games. Project Zero/Fatal Frame has had it's 4th installment released on the Wii, but as far as I know there are no plans to release it as an English game. Seeing as Nintendo America/Europe view the Wii as "family/non-gamer" friendly and the majority of the game releases are suitable for all ages, it's unlikely this will get translated and released in English, which is a shame.

The first game I played through in it's entirity, and loved every minute of it. The hook behind the game is that instead of being some super powered solider fighting zombies with machine guns and batons, as most of the genre exemplifies, in this game you are an average girl who can't fight for the life of her. You are given a special camera which allows you to take pictures of ghosts and capture their souls. It also allows you to see special things in the enviroment as well. Seeing as the main character is not all that fit, she moves slowly and runs like, well, a girl, no offense meant. It's in third person most of the time, giving you a sense of cluastrophobia, and switches to first person when looking through the camera. When you are in 1st person though you move quite slowly as the character is not as aware of the enviroment.

The story is incredible, at least for the first one. With tonnes of plot twists and what ifs and things slowly and horrifyingly put together, it's an amazing story to participate in.

I haven't played number 2 and 3, though I do own them. I'd still recommend the entire series though, but in particular the first one if you can get it.

Yeah, I've heard great things about Fatal Frame, and saw one of them (I think it was 2?) at my GameStop last time I went in. Problem was I didn't wanna pick up a game in the middle of a series, and then not know what's going on, y'know?2009-07-15 16:42:00

It's been a few years since I finished the first volume, and I never really got that far into the second and third games due to time constraints. From what I remember though the game is relatively forgiving in terms of back story. The series does indeed have a grand storyline with repeating elements throughout, but to a limited extent each story is also a fresh one as well. The second story is quite different to the first from what I saw, with a different setting (a village rather than a mansion) and a few different plot elements as well, in that the reason you are going to where you are and the characters being different as well. I can't give away too much as I don't want to give away plot twists from the first one and I have not played all that much of the second one.

Personally though, I'd recommend grabbing the second one if you can. I'm pretty sure it will fill you in on the most important bits, and hopefully leave you enjoying the series enough that you might really hunt down the 1st and 3rd episodes even more.

From what I can work out from the internets (that source of all knowledge ) it seems the Japanese have the 4th version of the game on the Wii only, and that there were plans for an English version to be released this Febuary (i.e. a few months ago). Seeing as that date is past and I have not seen the game yet, I'll have to keep trawling to find out what happened to this game...

Okay, cool, maybe I'll pick that up sometime, then. I really wanted to find a Silent Hill game, but they're very hard to find for some reason...2009-07-15 17:14:00
