Weird computer problem

Archive: 7 posts

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to put it. The other day, my computer screen romdomly reed for a moment, then went dark. At first I thought it was nothing, but then it kept happening more and more until even resetting doesn't help. I thought my computer somehow got stuck on hibernate mode, but while I was looking at it, I realized it wasn't at all! The screen, for whatever reason, is just EXTREMELY dim. So dim that you can't tell it's even on. I have no idea how to fix this, someone please help .2009-07-10 05:24:00

I have no idea if this is what's going on but I can tell you my co-worker's computer was having a very similar problem like this a few days ago. Our tech came in and blew a TON of dust out of the tower and it's been fine ever since. Just a thought and not professional tech advice mind you.2009-07-10 06:00:00

Is it simply dim, or are the graphics a little screwy? I had a problem about a year ago that occured because my graphics card was broken. I hope that's not the case, since that's a little expensive, but it's a possibility.

Another likely possibility is the monitor is somehow screwed up. Try a different monitor.

If by tower you mean CPU, that won't work, it's a laptop. EDIT:to hilightnotes, again, that won't work. It's a laptop, can't switch out monitors.2009-07-10 06:08:00

If it's a laptop I don't see what else it could be other than the graphics or video card 2009-07-10 06:12:00

What's the battery level on the laptop? Check your power settings, maybe something got fubar'd and it' set not to use full power to display?

Also try fiddling with the display's brightness controls.

Weird! ...you might try plugging in a normal monitor if you have one and see what happens by keeping both the laptop screen as well as the external monitor. That might at least tell you if it is indeed the graphics card or some other issue like maybe a power issue to the screen itself.

Not that you could replace the graphics card since most laptops it's part of the motherboard, but I always at least like to see which animal I am fighting before reaching for the phone.
