LittleBigBattleship

Archive: 14 posts

I've decided to truly announce a new project I've been working on for about a month now. It is easily the most ambitious project I have ever undertaken, and will rival many of the well-known contraptions of LittleBigPlanet (Calculator, TicTacToe, ConnectFour) in complexity. I am working on what I call LittleBigBattleship.

It will be a full, digital, LittleBigPlanet recreation of the classic kids game. Some things that it will include upon its completion and subsequent release:

Intelligent AI
Random placement of computer's ships
The ability to place your own ships
A full 10x10 grid
Scoring system

I have been working on this idea for a while, and I have eight full pages of sketches on how I will be implementing this. All of the main mechanisms have been either rough drafted on paper or digitized into LittleBigPlanet and are functioning. When completed, players will be able to set up their pieces and play a fully functional game of Battleship against a computer. The computer does play like a real player, checking around hit areas after it makes contact.

I will continually update this thread with progress and answer any questions that people may have. Sometime in the future, I should have a closed beta where I have people test out any bugs that I have not squashed.

This will be placed alongside my LittleBigMemory level, and I hope to have an entire series of classic kids games fully recreated in LittleBigPlanet. Some levels I hope to make in the future include:

Asteroids
JezzBall
Minesweeper
Checkers
Sokoban
DigDug

Holy squids on fire, man. That would probably be the next big thing of LBP. I look forward to seeing it!2009-07-10 19:46:00

Sounds good. It's a big old job jut I'm sure it's doable, and sounds like you're a good way into doing it! Will definitely be one to watch. what sort of response times are you expecting on the AI, or is it too early to tell?

I'm actually slightly more interested in asteroids though. Have you considered wrapping around the screen. I attempted to get my head around that concept, so that it would work for the ship and the asteroids and the sub asteroids. I couldn't get it.

Asteriods is a concept right now, LittleBigBattleship is a tangible thing for me. The AI is almost instant, it picks a spot and fires. The next turn will be affected by the outcome of the turns before it.

The only thing that might limit me from actually completing it is the thermometer, and it seems to be holding up very well so far, but I still have a lot of kinks to work out and implement everything correctly.

OH I just realised how dumb my last post was... Even if thinking time was high, it can just think while the player is taking their move!

Well sign me up for the beta anyway

I SWEAR, IF YOU SUCCESSFULLY CLONE JEZZBALL on LBP, u deserve to be doing something way other then just building maps, u should be creating your own games!

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE JEZZBALL, AND DIGDUG!

I'm new here and I only know a group of members already, but I can say that sounds incredible. The Advanced AI part appeals to me the most, though, as seeing the computer respond to a hit and call out more in that area is very ambitious.

Can't wait to check it out!

I can't wait to see this. It's the first thing I always think of when I see well made board games on LBP, but didn't think it would be possible without independent screen follow (if possible at all) - an AI opponent is the perfect solution.2009-07-13 02:45:00

The problem is that is is a full 10x10 grid, and it is very large, so what I've done (for the time being), is set it up as two different rooms. One room is for attacking, and the other is for displaying how much you've been attacked, where you've been hit, and what ships have been sunk.
