Survival Challenge: Wheel of Doom!

F4F: Survival Challenge: Wheel of Doom!LieutenantFatman My apologies for posting up another level so quickly, but I realise not everyone can play co-operatively with a friend. So here is an alternative, which I created a while back. This is, as you might imagine, a very short level. It's all about timing your jumps well. You will most probably need a few good goes to do well, it's not exactly easy. It's the usual spinning wheel which speeds up. Then you have plasma fired at you (not too much but watch out), and if you are very skilled, the wheel falls and rolls down a hill. That's when the points really start rolling in. The main hazards, are small bits of floor inside the wheel which are on fire, and one small hole. Don't fall out! Thanks and good luck. all | 2009-07-09 13:05:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
Man, that was hard: i died in every possible way, i even managed to get hit by a plasma ball as soon as it spawned the 10 seconds before the wheel falls are hellish, i pratically jumped randomly and managed to survive, but as soon as the wheel falled my luck ran out Nice level, but i didn't like the design: the materials seem a bit out of place, expecially the purple velvet; maybe try using materials from the same set; also, please change the stickers near the hole, maybe put a yoellow triangular warning instead of those arrow, it's confusing as it is now; maybe it's me, but i think the wheel spins a bit too fast: i enjoyed the first minute, after that i pratically panicked as i tried to stay alive, but had fun anyway i gave it :star::star::star: since the idea it's not exactly original, but you can improve this a lot | 2009-07-10 09:54:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
Cheers mate. It's true, it's one of the harder survival challenges out there, well done to getting where the wheel falls, few make it that far. I'll add those stickers! I also changed the velvet to gekko armour. Let me know if you think anything specific would work better. I shall leave the speed for now, see what other people think, cheers again. | 2009-07-10 10:20:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
I was going to play your co-op level, but I didn't have anyone else on. Anyway, at first I thought the level was ok, but once it started rolling, the fun really kicked in. The visuals weren't anything to get excited about, but they weren't crap either. The point distribution worked well in the beginning, but near the middle it got hard. However, once the wheel started rolling, it was easy money. My suggestion is to make the wheel not get to max speed so fast and to add little speedbumps after it starts rolling. Overall, I gave you :star::star::star::star: and a heart. | 2009-07-11 00:34:00 Author: RickTheRipper Posts: 345 |
I too was looking forward to your co-op level, but alas, my girlfriend was sleeping. I had to instead play the "Wheel of Doom." Firstly, it's a nice little challenge level - I didn't do so well, and only survived for about 2 revolutions on both plays . That being said, I was not a huge fan of the visuals - it all seemed very disorganized, and didn't have a theme going on. I also would've liked to see your own background instead of the MM one, because it just didn't really fit into the level. I know you are more concerned about the challenge, but since the level design is very simple, it really needs some visual spice. I gave this level 3 stars. | 2009-07-11 15:27:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Mmm good idea comphermc, I never really thought about that. I'll see what I can do. And Rick cheers, I'll see if I can put some ramps in, although even I couldn't get as far as you, lol. Second place is very impressive, well done. Please consider giving my co-op level a go if you get a chance guys. It's a lot more recent and simply all round better than this one. Cheers. edit: I added a couple of ramps for some extra excitement, works well thanks. I also changed the background to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Although it's nothing ground breaking I'm afraid. I messed around for a while, but kept breaking the level, so went for a nice simple sunrise. Cheers! | 2009-07-11 15:42:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
I'll be giving this a go tommorrow! I have no idea what to expect, although i do expect some sort of wheel and doom of sorts! Black-Toof :arg: | 2009-07-12 01:55:00 Author: BlackToof Posts: 172 |
It was a rather short level for me, since I died rather quickly all the times I played it. I have to agree with everyone else, the visuals were"nothing to get excited about". The only other suggestion I would make is to make the difficulty of the initial part more gradual than it currently is. I'll give feedback on your co-op level as well once my friend gets on. | 2009-07-12 03:19:00 Author: gersan93 Posts: 27 |
I thought the wheel by the sound of previous posts has been improved visually. Has a good Hue to the level. I died JUST AS it fell i actually thought it was part of what happened when you die but reading here i can see it supposed to happen in the level. Pretty good level Black-Toof :arg: | 2009-07-12 16:39:00 Author: BlackToof Posts: 172 |
'burp' I feel a little sick! just played it 5 times in a row... 'burp' # Great workout, got very dizzy. When it first started I thought it would be easy... "One little hole and a couple of fire stones to jump over... this will be easy" yeah right! - I very much liked the concept - Though I did not care much for the visual style. [jmho] # I did not make it till the wheel fell... but I did end up running around the top of the wheel for 30 seconds! # I imagine with a few other players in the wheel too would make it even more fun Def worth the plays :star::star::star: and tagged 'Fast' F4F: MitorATV https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13394 | 2009-07-12 18:34:00 Author: stuk71 Posts: 86 |
Visual style and difficulty seem to be the main problems here. Both will take time to address, not a quick fix situation unfortunately. If only I had an eye toy I could really go to town on the former problem. Anyway, this could take a while, I'll post back here when I have succeeded / failed. Thanks for all the feedback. stuk71, I will play your level soon. | 2009-07-12 18:54:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
If you would like any ideas... I personally would start the wheel at slower pace and gradually get faster over a much longer period of time... My visual style for the wheel of doom would be an industrial one, with huge cogs rotating and huge levers and pistons in the background. Make it look like you are inside a huge engine/machine - of course that is only one idea. I don't know how easy/hard that would take to add/change with what you have going on all ready | 2009-07-12 19:05:00 Author: stuk71 Posts: 86 |
I love survival challenges and this is no exception! This is a very fun and addicting survival challenge, but also very simple. You executed your concept of this level well and did a great job. The one thing I don't like too much about this level is the scenery, I just don't like the material choice, but that is a very minor complaint. I gave this level :star::star::star::star::star: and tagged it as hectic. Great job, I'm going to keep playing until I get top 10! Click the link below to do my F4F level. Thanks! | 2009-07-12 19:08:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
stuk71 that's a very constructive comment about the scenery, I thank you. I was considering similar things but to hear someone else say it fills me with more confidence in the idea working well. I'll work on it. As for the difficulty curve, I think you're right, a bit more tweaking is required. Dr_Vab thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! Good luck getting top ten. I'll check out your level as soon as I can. | 2009-07-12 20:07:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
OK people. I've done a huge update on this. The difficulty has been revamped to be a much kinder learning curve, plasma moves slower, and of course there is a completely new background, please tell me your thoughts, any specific material changes if required, thank you. Hopefully it should be a bit more fun now for those who couldn't manage the first few seconds. | 2009-07-14 23:04:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
I just played the level again and it is much easier, and I think makes it an overall better Survival Challenge. I also got 5th place! | 2009-07-15 14:35:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
Hahaha, i just played it couple of minutes ago.. And its not that bad yo!! I got 2nd place but wow, i was really dizzy.. All in all i gave it a :star::star::star::star:. Fun stuff. If you got time check out my level. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13796 | 2009-07-15 22:19:00 Author: Toinkz Posts: 19 |
I don't usually play survival challenges online, but this one I kinda liked. It's the kind of simple level that you can easily enjoy. See, it's not a complex survival challenge, it's very simple, but at the same time it is not easy nor impossible. Congratulation, I recommend you try to create more complex survival challenges so we can see all your might. After all, 3 stars to you :star::star::star: | 2009-07-15 22:31:00 Author: Shadowmoser Posts: 17 |
Wow, thanks all. It sounds like there isn't much more I can really do to improve here. I shall, as suggested go for something a bit more complex now. It's nice to know everyone is enjoying this after all the improvements, that's the main thing. I've tried different colours on the new background but I'm not too great at that, lol. My girlfriend is back on Saturday, so I'll see what she says. Thanks again. I'll look at your levels tomorrow after work. | 2009-07-15 23:10:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
Thanks for the feedback on my survival challenge, here's mine on yours: Ok, i decided to try your Wheel of Doom! survival challenge. It was pretty good. It was simple but fun to play. I restarted like 5 times, which is a good sign with survival games. Just when i start to get a rythym(?) i die and think "ok i can do better". The wheel speed i think was perfect. It didnt become too fast too soon. I didnt get too far but i think the the challenge was fair and fun, and with some commitment i could get a high score. The only negative i found were the visuals. It was a little bland, and i didnt like the materials you chose. I probably would have gone with a mix of metals, woods or stone painted completely (stickered) red. But thats what i would have chosen, however since i dont know your tastes i cant make a strong suggestion. I will tell you to just mess around with material changer till you see something that looks more interesting. Overall, you did a good job on this. Testing out my own survival challenge allows me to see the work you put into this. Its not as easy as I used to think. | 2009-07-16 01:04:00 Author: antman Posts: 84 |
Thanks mate. Another thumbs up to the well balanced difficulty, I'm relieved! Shame the visuals still aren't perfect. I tried making the entire background red last night as you suggested, and wow, it really looked confusing, lol. Nice idea though. I stand by my last post, colour co-ordination is not my forte. I'll see if there can be any improvement soon though. | 2009-07-16 08:26:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
Yes..I finally got some time to play your levels (except co-op). I played this level and that racing motorcycle level which was okay but thats not the subject. OK..First of I like the idea of the level and the simpleness of it. The gameplay was really fun it was from really slow to super fast in a quick time period. The visuals in the level are decent but it's nothing to complain about. And the replay is excellent it was really addicting and fun. So For my first level review I give Survival Challenge: Wheel of Doom! :star::star::star::star: and tagged tricky | 2009-07-26 02:19:00 Author: Thundersmacker Posts: 21 |
