I am sadness.
I am VERY sadness.
I've made 3 LEVELS. I've had this game since before Christmas. Two were just obstacle courses, one was just a lobby to wait for people.

I need help, I need level ideas. Please ... Help?

so i take it this is a thread asking for help about inspiration? Well, what interests you? I take it, Valve, and headwear, maybe you could make levels about those? Make a small version of half life 2, create the untold backstory of the companion cube, make an adventure about searching for the perfect chapeau! Just do a little brainstorming, i'm sure theres more than just an empty imagination well under that hat of yours

I also like to just mess around in create mode and look at other levels for inspiration.

Burn has given you great advice. Everyone has a bit of creativity in them, you just need to find what inspires you. Heck, you could even make a level about what takes your inspiration away. Hate your job or school? Make a funny level about why you hate it. Ever have a nightmare that has haunted you to this day and makes no sense? There's something to run away with creatively! There's lot's of ideas floating around in your head... you just need to pick one and attack it. 2009-07-09 05:58:00

I made two levels based on one of my favorite games. What's your favorite game? Could you do an homage to it in LBP?2009-07-09 06:11:00

I've had the game for 6 months. I have produced 0 levels. Think yourself lucky

If you don't have a concept for a level, don't force it. If you are still motivated to create, just mess around with no real aim. Try new stuff visually, try new stuff conceptually, see if you can come up with some unique obstacles or gameplay elements, some enemies or the character for an NPC. At some point some of your aimless creating will probably spark a simple idea that will spiral out of control into a full blown level.

... I've had this game since launch, and produced a couple horrible levels no one should ever see, and one level published that I'm currently in the process of retouching...

... For me the problem my not be lack of ideas, but lack of willpower O_o. And skill too, I guess... <_>

... But yeah, um... listen to what the others said XD

Force yourself. I know this is exactly the contrary on what the others said, but it's how I work, and what I can reccommend. I simply did choose a random theme for the level, and built around it. Mine was french ninjas. What's yours?

I tend to lose interest in what I'm doing, but I try to balance that with willpower. I force myself to do it, and as strange as it sounds, I reccomend you to do so. You could also try it.

As boring or horrible as it sounds, it is worth, because at the end, when you play your own level (if your level is good, you'll never be tired of playing it) you feel terribly satisfied with yourself. For me, it is the product at the very end that matters, and not the way you went trough to reach it. So "fight" for it and you'll see how proud of yourself you'll be, and besides, how much fun it will be too -even if I guarantee that it won't always be fun-.

Obviusly, this is just a reccomendation, and it's up to you to pick up my "philosophy" or the one that Burnvictim and Rustbukkit suggested, for example, wich is another perfectly working way to get your level done.

Hope I did help you in one way or another!

I think its different for everyone. Usually, i just go play other peoples levels. There are so many good levels out there now, your bound to be inspired by some of them.

Ideas can come from anywhere, for example, I was playing around with the last level I published, and I liked a wheel I did for a cannon in it. I kept messing around and made that wheel into a full western style wagon. Next thing I know I'm doing a western themed trilogy. It can be as simple as that sometimes.

I don't think someone should force himself to create / use the editor because a game offers it.
It's like a single player game that is also having a multiplayer mode. If I'm not attracted by the multiplayer mode, why should I force myself and try to love it?

I say, enjoy LBP, play more levels. Play the game more, search for great user content. You are overwhelmed by great levels to try anyways and this for probably until the servers will be shut down someday.

AND IF at some point you feel like creating, that you have ideas that pleases you, then at that moment in time go in create mode and do it.

Smashed watermellons sound pretty comical.

Maybe make something around that.. tossing them into a truck to get to the next segement. If you drop one they smash? ..or birds dropping them while they fly by and you have to avoid them. ..watermellon seed spitting is a comical thing they do at some county fairs. Maybe make a machine to shoot them at evil watermellons coming to trash your town? ...or spit them out at waves of incoming birds or other enemies?

Don't be sad.. get weird!!!

The best inspiration is drawn from something that MEANS something to you. Some great ideas come from taking the world around you and your own experiences, and twisting them a bit.

Have a pet? Have something you or your family do that you enjoy? Have a favorite book? Usually for me the best inspiration comes from NOT sitting in front of LittleBigPlanet.

There was a great level from OswaldTheCat a while ago called "You forgot to feed the cat" in which the unfed cat destroys the city. Great stuff!

And I agree with Jwwphotos - the idea of a smashing watermellons level sounds fantastic - you may have touched on something there.

I've had the same trouble for the longest time, TC. (Wait, what do we call original posters here? I'm used to GameFAQs...) What I ended up doing was pulling out my sketchbook that I never draw anything useful in these days and I just started throwing down some lines with the vague intention of turning it into a level eventually. By the time I was done, I had two pages full of sketches, notes, and the like. This approach might not work for everyone, but it worked for me. The problem is that two pages isn't very far into the level, but it's a really good start.

So, basically, I just drew out an outline for the level and let the story flow on its own.

I had the game day one.
I published an horrible unplayable level since I didn't saw what the other users were able to pull out.
Then I saw Azure Palace, The Grinder (mostly on youtube vids) and I got quite depressed and stopped to work.
Now I'm making a level, it's quite good in my eyes, evn if not revolutionary or good as I would.
I have a lot of difficulties, but the guys here are very kind and have always a suggestion to help you.
LBP has the best community ever, start with something and come back to ask.
You don't have to force yourself on a daily basis, but just build little labs, levels where you try something, you build contraptions and so on, and when they finally work, put them in your level.

He's not even joking, I'm already making a new steam-punk level from the battleship I made

well, my advice is to only start creating a serious level when you're sure the idea is good and content inside the level can actually be done. Also, usually you're only gonna' create really good stuff when you're in the mood for it. So just keep playing other people's levels and other stuff until you feel inspired and motivated. And about ideas, just get inspiration and ideas from other people's levels, or even things you like outside LBP. Then think how you could make it into a level.2009-07-14 20:45:00

I get a dictionary and flip it open to a random page, the first adjective after that page I write down, I flip it open again and instead write down the first noun, before you know it you have: Angry Plant, Fluffy Monster whatever. It even works with normal books, try ones like Alice in Wonderland, that have imaginative stuff, I just picked up Inkheart from my bookshelf and came up with Bored Wizard.

Build upon this think, Why is the ...............(noun) ...........(adjective)?
What effects could this have?
What can stop them?

Soon you will have a full level.
For the level I'm working on, I did this method and got Crazy FairyTale, which is exactly what my level is! Try it yourself!

I love you, I'm gonna start doing this now :hero:

Uhm, you should try thinking of weird things, they're usually fun to do as long as they're weird. Maybe a level with flying sandwiches fighting a rabid army of growing celery sticks, or brain-eating zombies try to take over a mental clinic, the choice is yours, my friend!

Thanks!

I always use my method when I'm feeling uninspired, anyone is welcome to use it!

Got a favorite song atm? Good Inspiration. Pull the ol medium switch... turn an audible entitiy into a visual one... Got a favorite colour atm? what comes to mind? Answer true and quick don't think too much...

Adam Ant (underground) Digital tenderness (makes me think of the tin man/wanting heart) (makes me think of those pleasure droids from that Bjork video--overlit--laggy-sparks!) Nine Plan Failed (a brainless recruit stamped 'reject', then signed him up again...."I'll Show you whose boss!!!")

Green- moss, grass trees, Green can also be evil and ominous...slime-plasmaball emitting machinery to stop player... so i'm sensing a technology vs, nature theme here... SO...

Level starts with sack strapped to a medical gurney waiting for brain reassignment in an evil dark sinister underground lair... Sudden a bright green lite shines upon him. Sack imagines in this dark place he hears birds chirping... suddenly leaves begin to flutter down a voice speaks, "Wake now my child, there is work to be done... Set free your brothers, Do Not Stop! Never stop! [initiating plan nine...] Find Me... follow my voice... follow Nature... follow your heart." Sack boy jumps off the gurney..."

It's that easy...Oh and in despite nearly infinite lives... in this case whatever our sack hero is trying to accomplish, he wakes up in the end- back on the gurney... The song and level are called, "#9 Plan Failed"

The best way to get ideas is by playing other people's levels.
You can use their IDEA but not their level.
You see what I'm saying?

Music can be a great way to spark off ideas - its worked really well for me. You can get ideas from lyrics, names of the song, re-make the song in LBP or make a tribute to your favourite band! Most songs tell a story and you can use that story in your level too.2009-07-17 14:42:00
