My first submission to the F4F system - the first in a (planned) series of simple platformer levels. These levels are my little love letters to the old 8 bit platformers I grew up with, hence the non-important plot.

It's gotten four (big whoop) plays so far, and it has an in my opinion totally undeserved single star rating. D'you suppose I should republish?

Even if you don't bother leaving feedback, I hope you enjoy!

They might have rated it that low for a simple reason, have you tested your level thoroughly? Some people might not be able to solve a puzzle or obstacle, so they leave quickly and give it a low rating.

But, if it's rated that low, I would just suggest republishing it.

I've tested it pretty thoroughly for glitches and excessively tricky areas - and it's a fairly simple level. Oh well; I republished it and we'll see where it goes. Maybe I'm not as adequate as I think I am.2009-07-09 05:05:00

okay, i just played this with my brother. DEFINITELY doesn't deserve the 1 star it had. Some very nice visuals, and some good humor, not to mention the platforming. You have a very clean style with your level, and it looks great. the stickers you used made the materials pop out in a way... i don't know, it just loolked nice.

I gave it a 5 and a heart, that should help keep your rating high. look forward to your next in teh series.

no F4F necessary.

Absolutely beautiful one of the best levels I've ever seen, an excellent little tribute to the classic platforming games of the nes and snes without just being another lame mario level. Great work! 5 stars, hearted, tagged as beautiful... or brilliant I've forgotten already:blush:
one of those. Also the king was friggn hilarious!
Th boss fight was a little slow to me. Having infinite lives really took away from it, what with it being so simple. I'd swap that for a double life checkpoint or speed it up a bit. Maybe add a speed proximity switch or something? The level itself though? Close to the best I've ever played.

The dialogue was drop dead hilarious, and well written. The design and layout of the environment was perfect for platforming... and I really like the understated use of a few complimentary materials, most of which were usually difficult to incorporate into a color scheme. I like the basic fundemental of a few sizes and shapes (blocks for the most part) being used to great effect. Tasteful and eye catching sticker/deco use. The one GLS use was tasteful and gave the latter half alot of mood without beating you over the head with artistry. Like others have said, it harkens back to Mario in it's balance, fun and imagery (and it's satire) without being a cheap imitation. I liked the boss as well - very creative platforming-skill driven boss.

Nice work... played your other level as well, and it's very well done.

Let's start from the beginning. I liked the choice to have a story go along with it, and the cartoon-style and scenery looked great. "Plot" or "Not" was a good way to start it off, not only does it give the player options right off the bat, but its mildly funny and prepares the player for a great level. (Side note: Does it actually give you those bubbles at the beginning for listening to the plot? If so, its a good incentive to actually follow the level's scheme) The dialog was well-written, funny, and slightly cynical. Some parts were mildly challenging, but it was an overall light-hearted and relaxed level. All of the platforming elements were well constructed and fun, and the inclusion of infinite life checkpoints was a good choice, especially at the plasma ball part. I liked the hidden areas with point bubbles, those were a nice inclusion and added to the replayability of it all. I took the top 2-player spot, and I'll take the one-player spot next time I have a little extra time. I gave the level :star::star::star::star::star: because it made me laugh and I had fun. I hearted it too. Great job and I'm looking forward to the sequels.

Aw man, I just typed a whole big thankful response and then it got deleted. I'll try to sum up what I wrote:

First of all, thanks to everyone for the kind words!

Second, to RadicalStan, I'll check out the boss and see if I can't find a better speed. I agree that it's a little dull right now; making complex creatures is NOT my strong point.

Third, I'll be playing your guys' levels this weekend, if not before!

Fourth - thanks again!

Edit: Fifth - BSprague: Yes, there are points that drop down if you choose the "Plot" path. Good catch.

Played both your levels tonight and I really am a fan of your style. It's not fussy or dramatic but it's clean design and lovely colors and very understated with some rock solid platforming underneath it. Very funny dialogue in this one - greatly witty and mildly sarcastic tone - which is a smart counterpoint to the level's otherwise sweetly appearing pastel design. Nice contrast effect it produces and makes it even more funny.

I think the main reason I loved it is that it's so quiet and understated but charming in a way rarely seen in LBP levels. This quality would have made me like the level a lot but since it's on top of great platforming and fun experience overall - I love it.

The rating it currently has is a crime. Don't let it discourage you. I'm looking forward to more levels from you. Gave this one 5 stars & hearted it. Thanks for sharing it!

Very impressive level. It managed to cram all of the humour LBP possesses into a single Mario-style level. Ok, the visuals weren't brilliant, but that was what made it feel Mario like for me.

Pros:
+ Optional plot
+ The humour was great
+ Classic 2D platforming
+ Felt like a Mario game
+ There's going to be a sequel!

Cons:
- Mm King was used. It's generally better to just make your own (and I daresay more thermo friendly)
- Sometime you'd drop through to an older part of the level. Quite annoying but not easy to fix.

still, :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart

I personally liked the king. He's almost iconic of LittleBigPlanet, in a good way of course.2009-07-10 20:01:00

I'd have to agree. Normally the use of MM stuff stands out in a level and can hurt the overall look of a level BUT in this case it doesn't bug me at all. I think it may actually make what he says funnier since he's a known character we all have seen then to have the stuff he says be so wacky... I like him in this level.2009-07-10 20:13:00

I agree he fits in this level well, but I as also thinking thermo-wise it is usually better. Could lead to a longer second level 2009-07-10 20:31:00

I could be wrong, but using the MM king didn't seem to hurt my thermometer too badly. I would experiment with putting a custom king in the 2nd level, but... I'm actually already done with the 2nd level! I just haven't published it yet.

I'm very honored by all the praise. I hope I can continue to deliver fun levels, since I'm planning on making this an 8 part series... (One for each world in SMB3!)

I think the story mode King spewing such ridiculous, witty and self depreciating platformer humor and social commentary adds to the satirical value of it all.

Doesn't hurt to practice building NPC's, but if it's not your forte at the time (and I'm not saying it's not), a level is less impeded by a story mode MM-made NPC than a sloppy, single piece cardboard cutout with a sticker slapped on it that's supposed to look good, but doesn't (which is often the case)... IMO. If all else fails, sackboy cut outs are therm friendly, and fit all context effortlessly.

It's definitely NOT my forte... There's a reason the boss was a big wooden wheel with spikes on it and not an elaborate stomping dinosaur monster.

I have a gajillion unfinished levels where I'm trying to make complicated pretty stuff. This series is all about playing to my strengths.

(I'll be playing everyone's F4F levels later tonight, btw!)

...and that's obviously why it was so excellent for what it was, and not subpar for failing to be something it can't. If that makes no sense, it's a compliment on the design and gameplay.2009-07-11 00:44:00

Hey there CaptainCowboyHat,

I was a little apprehensive about playing your level because I saw the obvious throwback to Mario, but I'm glad I finally played it. In fact, I enjoyed your level more than all of the Mario recreation levels out there (including the most popular of them). The humor was done very well throughout, and you really had me searching out those hidden bubble piles.

There was even quite a bit of challenge going on in this level, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My score was doing so well until the castle/wheel of death area... . This level was an easy :star::star::star::star::star: and heart from me.

Here's looking forward to part 2...

Edit: This is the 20th post, so you'll now find your level in the "Cool Pages" section, where it belongs.

Hell, YES!

These two words do always come to my mind when I play a level that makes me enjoy myself. You see, I tend to browse cool pages, and I always feel discouraged and lose faith in humanity because of that (there are always exceptions), so deciding to give a try to your level after that was... regenerating. It felt like a breeze of fresh air. Thanks god I did.

I'm always concerned about the visuals, it's a thing that I always consider important in every level. And, I've got to say, that if at first I didn't like much how you did the level, all Mario-like, I was like "great, another level tribute to Mario :S"
But there was a point where I did really begin to enjoy the platforming, and somehow, the visuals and platforming merged so well that I jut couldn't dislike the visuals. It did really take back some good memories of my gameboy, with the game Mario on it. Awesome job on that.

The difficulty did gradually increasse, in a way that you could notice, wich means it did really increasse, quite a bit, I'd say. Somehow, I did manage not to die a single time at the dinosaurs lair, but I was just luck, since there were tons of plasma balls... I can definetely imagine myself dying there over and over. Not that I care, I love being hurt for the sake of a good challenge.

The boss was... to simple for my standars. BUT if you are sure that you aren't able of making something, don't. So, if you couldn't go for anything more complicated, don't worry, I -and I think also WE- can understand. It was some pretty good platforming anyways, cool thing. Just one complain; Could you put th checkpoint nearer the action? I grew tired of running many times to reach the darn boss, and climb over those staris too. This might be my only complain on the WHOLE level.

Ah, the king... who would have guessed that the Mm king would be afraid of making mysogin comments. I mean, c'mon, isn't every princess able to take down some dinosaur king on her own? Obvius.
Seriously, if you want to make me happy, gimme humour. Satirical, absurd, whatever kind. That makes me happy. And when I'm happy, I rate levels 5 stars and heart them. Im afraid that that's what I did, btw :arg:

You really gave me a sweet time; I honestly would like to see the 2nd part.
Just a tip; If you really would like to have some nice player made NPC, you can always ask around here. I think that many people would love to do it for you, just to see it implemented in such a charming level. Even I.

As for F4F, I'd love you to give it on my incoming -very soon- level, Lafarge's Request. I shall send a Private Message you when the time comes. Thanks in advance!

I had a lot of fun playing this level! Great stuff

The simple humor was nice, and the platforming was really well executed. You didn't have anything terribly unique, but still maintained your own style, and had a well-made boss. I can't wait for the sequel!
