The Unfair Platformer (IGN Pick!)Dr_Vab This is a difficult level with many hidden traps, but you have infinite lives so you won't have to worry about running out of lives. This level also has a good bit of humor, so hopefully it will keep a smile on your face. all This level is somewhat old, but I'm currently making the sequel for it so I want to know what I can improve in the sequel. I would love to hear how I can improve it even more. If you have an idea for an obstacle that you think I should include in the sequel tell me, I'll probably put it in if I think it works! I'll get to everyones F4F as soon as I get a chance. Here's a video, although I recommend you play the level first because this would just spoil the traps. Enjoy! Hey welcome to LBPCentral first of all! I was one of your 22,067 plays on this level already, and I must say I was a big fan. It was a great blend of visuals and gameplay and humor. Especially the last one. Anyway, I would love to play it again - and here's my feedback: -First of all, amazing colors and visuals. Don't change this at all! -Obviously, you don't need the 50 little life gates any more with the infinite life gate -Don't let ANY dark matter show on the sequel, like on the sun in the first one. It looks a bit cheap in a really beautiful level - it detracts from all the hard work you put into those visuals. -When you have a little tree there, to use to get over an unfair hazard. Keep in mind that if it's in the mid ground and the rest of the playing area is in the foreground then the player on the tree can walk off the tree and fall behind the playing area. This only happened once to me, and it's an unfair platformer so cheap deaths really aren't a complaint here are they? lol -Ok so I love the level - and the sense of timing and jokes is spot on so here's what I can help you with in the sequel You don't need dissolve to make stuff disappear, you can attach any object you want to disappear to a block of material way off screen by a rope, make the rope invisible, put a protected brain on the block and then have whatever switching mechanism you want to make the object disappear set to one time, and attach it to the brain. This should be done way off screen so you can't hear the sound the brain makes when it dies. Also it would amazing if you had a light that the player drug around that would slow him down enough to cause a couple deaths. But if he didn't take it with him, you use the global lighting tool to turn the lights off - making it instant death for those without a light. Or just turn the lights off with the global lighting tool now and then with some appropriate signs of humor. Lastly you can drop some bombs on a score board's base until it completely goes away... Then the scoreboard can be placed on a single layer, like the foreground since your whole level is most likely in one layer again, because with multiple players the score board hanging off in the background like it does in the first one can lead to the players falling off too My F4F level is called Deja Boom Beta F4F PSN: LuckyShot link: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13262 Looking forward to the sequel to this. Such a great time with the first one. | 2009-07-08 16:23:00 Author: LuckyShot Posts: 713 |
Nice to see you here Vab! As you can see, people over here give GREAT feedback, I actually feel kinda dumb posting this short response after that awesome feedback. Anyway, I played it a long time ago and it was just awesome and funny. An idea for the second one, make one of the jumps from like one big area of land to another instead of having something pop up out of nowhere, on one part the land you're trying to jump on just moves out of the way right when you go next to it. | 2009-07-08 17:02:00 Author: brnxblze Posts: 1318 |
Thank you both for the great feedback! @LuckyShot- I've already created a new sun with no dark matter showing for the sequel, so that shouldn't be a problem anymore. I also am thinking I'm going to make the sequel two layers instead of one to avoid the tree problem. Those are also some great ideas you gave me and thanks for telling me about the scoreboard problem because I was never aware of that. I'll get to your F4F as soon as I get back to my PS3 (probably Sunday, maybe Saturday). @brnxblze- I was actually making something almost exactly like this to put in the level and definitely am now! | 2009-07-08 18:14:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
Here's a review that I got for it a while back at littlebigworkshop: THE UNFAIR PLATFORMER AUTHOR: Dr_Vab DIFFICULTY: [Extreme] (Don't worry) POSITIVES: I loved this level. The sarcastic signs that popped up when you did something wrong were actually hilarious. The traps were funny and ingenious. Usually in any other level they would frustrate you to no end but they were really fun and enjoyable this time. This level is supposed to be hard and nigh impossible on the first time, and it turned out to be a fun, great experience. The decoration was consistently good throughout. The different sound effects helped as well. NEGATIVES: There isn't too much bad to say about this level except that some players may get fed up with the impossible traps and give it a one-star. That's only players who didn't read the title and description, though. I guess I can say one more bad thing about it; it was too short. NITPICKS: The material for the 'run-fast' lowering block was way out of theme with everything else. (I've fixed this since the review.) SUGGESTIONS: Make a sequel. Maybe make the checkpoints more obvious, take the decorations off. OVERALL RATING: 5/5 stars; hearted Thanks gocubsgo2 for the review! | 2009-07-09 18:23:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
I love the look of it, it completely contrasts with the feel of it. It looks sweet and cute and fun, but in reality, it is a vicious monster that will leave you tearing your hair out. That said, I thought it was well constructed and hilarious. There was a little bit of confusion for me at the beginning trying to figure out what to do, but once I saw the trees I thought I had it down. True to its name, there are many parts where if you haven't played it before, you will certainly die, but that's alright, because the sarcastic signs lighten the mood and make the constant death more bearable. I don't have any issues or bugs to report, other than objects randomly disappearing or appearing in areas that result in my death . :star::star::star::star: from me, my only gripe being that I wish it was longer, as there are a lot of things you could carry on with keeping this basic principle. For F4F, please check out my LittleBigMemory level: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13198 | 2009-07-09 19:17:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
I should have remembered this when I saw the title. As soon as I started and got "nailed" by the box, I remembered it was the one I was upset at so long before. ...well my sack skills were quite terrible at that point!! Anyway.. great concept and pulled off well. I was actually able to finish it this time as well as not feeling like chucking the controller out the window! The humor is great as well as the platforming presented. ..unfair is an understatement!! Actually that helped a bit as I was able to avoid a few of the cheap shots as I just KNEW what was probably going to happen. (I never got very far the first time way back when... ) I agree with brnxblze for the next one that simply moooving a piece here and there.. maybe with a creaking sound would be a neat twist. ..or possibly falling a few seconds later.. maybe even Monty Python style squishing them with a big boot or something else large and heavy. 4 stars! :star::star::star::star: Thanks again for checking out my level! | 2009-07-09 23:13:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Thank you for the feedback @BSprague- Yeah the length of the level was the main criticism that people had with the level, I just didn't want people to start to think the level was repetitive because they were dying so much. The sequel I'm making now looks like it is going to be quite a bit longer so that people won't have a problem with the length of the level. Thanks for the feedback, and I'll get to your F4F as soon as I get back to my PS3 (Probably around Saturday or Sunday). @jwwphotos- That's a good idea about moving platform and the creaking sound I'll be sure to add that and I also had a similar idea with something randomly falling on you except mine was a giant sign. Also, I'm glad you enjoyed your play through more this time than your first time. | 2009-07-10 03:34:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |

When I played the level, I had the impression that "Oh, Unfair Platformer! It's going to be hard and long" but it was actually fairly short. And the obstacles seemed fairly easy to maneuver through :/ | 2009-07-11 19:17:00 Author: GrahamLif3 Posts: 386 |
I found myself smiling through the entire play of this level. I was like alright, I know there's a block there that's going to block me and get me killed. So, I try to jump over and humourously, the block was right in front of my face and I ended up dying from the falling spikes anyway lol. Great level. A good break from the seriousness of the previous levels I've played. I gave this level :star::star::star::star::star:, brilliant, and hearted. Kudos! GrahamLif3- I know the level is pretty short, but what do you mean the "obstacles seemed fairly easy to maneuver through"? What I wanted for this level was, the player gets killed by and unfair trap, and then after that can easily avoid it. I didn't want players to get extremely frustrated at one point in the level. I wanted the player to die, laugh, and move on. I'm not sure if this exactly what you're refering to, and if you're not just tell me. MrTran- I'm really glad you enjoyed my level thanks for the high rating and comment. I'll probably do your F4F someime tomorrow. | 2009-07-12 04:15:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
I played this... the misdirection was pretty well done. A good challenge the first time through, and it was funny being duped repeatedly. | 2009-07-12 04:33:00 Author: Unknown User |
Thanks NinjamicWZ, that was the goal of my level, trying to get people to laugh at the different ways they die. | 2009-07-12 16:37:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
Hardy Haa... Yes, very good, I fell for it every time! Best one for me was the swinging flowers and how the 3rd one dropped me out of the sky... It was all very colourful and fun - It suited the theme, but I did think it was a bit much, jmho - maybe slightly toned down Apart from a couple of jumps at the beginning and the swinging part it was all very flat, would be great to add the multi-level parts to this - you could go very far with this concept and your making a sequel... very good I will look forward to it It all worked very well, nothing broke, and I didn't ever get trapped - And you made me smile the whole way through! :star::star::star: and tagged PERILOUS! Haha, great stuff, I love a bit of humour in levels as I've said before. It's hilarious thinking, "Aha, I not falling for this trick!" but it turns out the level creater is one step ahead. "Noooooooooo!" Very well presented as well, plus the music works well with it. It's a good length, any longer and it would be frustrating I think. I gave it :star::star::star::star::star: as I love the fun and humour, and I can think of nothing to improve upon, good work! I look forward to the sequel! | 2009-07-12 22:34:00 Author: LieutenantFatman Posts: 465 |
Thank you both so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I'm really glad you guys both enjoyed it. I'm hoping the sequel lives up to your expectations. | 2009-07-12 23:57:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
I have a feeling you've played "I Wanna Be the Guy" because this level really reminded me of that! It also frustrated me like that game, but in that hilariously funny way! The level is difficult, but nothing too hard really. I mean, you get tricked a few times and then you can usually make it through to the next area without much trouble. I liked that. I also liked the humor throughout the level and it often caused me to laugh when as I died repeatedly. The tricks where pretty clever and you totally duped me at the end when I tried to use the tree to job the gap, but you blocked up high that time. Very nice! Anyway, fun, frustrating, and hilarious! Nice job! | 2009-07-13 19:25:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
Thanks mrsupercomputer. I have played "I Wanna be the Guy", but I didn't want to make it near as hard as that! And that's exactly how I wanted the level to be, you get tricked and then make it through pretty easy. I wasn't sure how many people were fooled by that trap because everytime I let my friends play the level they always just jumped across, but I'm glad it got a few people. | 2009-07-14 14:37:00 Author: Dr_Vab Posts: 134 |
I liked it. Found it cute and funny. Had me chuckling the whole time. Got 5 stars and a heart from me when it came out. | 2009-07-14 16:53:00 Author: Matt 82 Posts: 1096 |
I get what you were going for but I just can't get into it. I like a fighting chance on levels and it just didn't seem like I had one (I guess that's the joke.) Maybe it's because I'm coming at this from a female perspective or it's an age thing - I don't know - it just wasn't a level I had fun playing. I'm usually the most happy go lucky LBP player in general but I couldn't find the funny in this one. Sorry. I know I'm in the minority on this one so I'm guessing it's just me and not the level that isn't getting it. Nicely built though and I do like the decorations | 2009-07-19 06:37:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
I couldn't find a thread for the second one so I guess I just post here. Great job on it! I really liked all the decoration and it was hilarious, I was laughing the whole time. It's like you read my mind on a lot of the things, sometimes you have to jump on a tree first to get past, every single time I didn't do it and one time I did and I still got blocked lol. I also like the "Secret Path.....of Death." :star::star::star::star: and a heart from me. | 2009-07-20 19:06:00 Author: brnxblze Posts: 1318 |
