Adventure in Tiny Town - Save our Coaster

Adventure in Tiny TownjwwPhotos
http://www.jwwwebdesign.com/photos/LBP/AdventuresTinyTown/Photo_5.jpgTiny Town is in trouble and needs your help! The town is depending on you to get their roller coaster operational. Explore the countryside in hopes of getting a ride on the coaster before bedtime.
all
This is a level that I published back in March before I was a member here. First off, I have to say I was inspired by theWiggler and pinkzep for coasters in general as well as natecube for his Safari Coaster as I loved the scenery in that one. My thanks and best regards to them all!! My twist on it was that I thought it would be fun to be able to play around on the scenery and then take a ride on the coaster. The coaster is pretty fast and has a surprise cute ending that makes the little kid in me smile.

This isn't a hard level by any means.. pretty easy for sack skills of all ages.

Basically it is a fun scenic level with a bit of easy platforming tossed in to break up the normal R1 coaster ride once you have it back online. You have to get to the power station to turn on the power and then across the countryside to enable the 4 relays. Once that is complete, you are ready to finally ride the coaster. Closed circuit tv helps guide you through the level. ...and yes, I use the MM cuddly bear, but it hopefully makes sense why once you reach the end.

Basically I wanted to share this as I think it is pretty darn cute. Great for kids of any age.

Words of warning. The switches MUST be activated in the down position before you leave them or the coaster will not be online once you return. I was pretty silly by not making it a bit more fool proof. Also in the power station, refrain from turning the switch back off as the elevator to get you out can break.

I have since tried to fix it, but am at the edge of the dreaded 160 hour limit as I left it in play during most of the creation. Learned that issue the hard way!!! So yup.. there are a few minor issues that I would love to be able to correct, but I might have to start over to correct them.

Here are some pics..

Good level. The level was really easy, but then again, you said it was going to be easy (Although I did die at the camp fire, didn't notice it). You probably meant it to be really easy so that anyone could play it, so I understand. It was impossible to die from the enemies, though. I think you could have put something lethal on them without changing the difficulty too much.

Good detail on everything, like the bus, and especially in the bed room (I like how one of the enemies was in the bedroom).

It felt more rewarding than any other roller coaster level, since you actually had to start it up and fix it to get it moving, which I liked.

Overall :star::star::star:.

Heh.... I just played this the other day and really enjoyed it. I liked the fact that it wasn't JUST a coaster ride, but that there were other gameplay elements.

You definately have a knack for creating fun. The level keeps you moving and has a lot of flying around all over the place, which is cool.

Graphical details.... the area that this level doesn't quite fare as well is in the graphics department. It could use some sprucing up with custom character content and building details.

I gave it 4 stars. Great fun!

Glad you enjoyed! ...yeah.. it is simple, but I wanted everyone to be able to get to the end. I actually had the path up over the power plant quite a bit more difficult, but nobody seemed to be able to figure it out and got 1 star, ugly etc.. and updated it. You are correct though as making those enemies a bit lethal wouldn't have made it any more difficult. ...but glad the fire got you!! Heh heh heh.. The reason I say that is because that is what got me several times when I was testing. I will see if I can make a few changes and see what I come up with after I complete my new level.

Thanks for the comments!!

Thanks! ...I doooo like fun! Glad you enjoyed it!! That means quite a bit to me coming from you.

Basically I had this interesting coaster concept that was much more stable with it being a mid sack design. (as opposed to mid engine ya see) Keeping him in the middle like that helped me to go faster and give more of a coaster "feel". I got a bit bored with it though as simply adding scenery around everywhere felt like a ripoff of Safari Coaster. After thinking about it a few days... the storyline and concept was born.

Hmmm more detail in the buildings. I might be able to do that as well as add more stickers to spruce things up. I think I spent most of the time on the landscape and the bedroom after getting the coaster working, but never really went into decoration mode since it was only my 2nd level. At that time, I didn't know where "no more room" actually was on the thermo!! I recall it yelling at me, scared me to death and stopped. Plus I had to go to a prior backup as pistons, wobble bolts stopped working all over the place due to the 160 hour limit as I let the coaster run the entire time I was building everything else to make sure it didn't break. DOH!!!!! I've learned quite a bit since March though and I think I still a bit of room to add decorations.

..as far as a custom character. I dunno.. I don't like using MM content especially after you left similar comments on my Baja level. (which I did update quite a bit btw!). That fuzzy bear is adorable and not sure I could make another as cute and cuddly as well as furry. Plus he was so cooperative and photogenic during my photo shoot sessions for the tv sets. ..hopefully you understand why it would have to be a teddy bear! So I may revisit that as well, but not sure yet..

Thanks again!!

A level where you adventure through the various parts and then rollercoaster through it all! That's an epic idea.

You really should make another level with the same premise. Next time, you could switch it up with some more complex platforming and varied worlds like a water themed section and a fire themed one, etc. And maybe some fresh characters for each one instead of that same silly bear. Then at the end, you roller coaster through the various worlds. i believe that would be epic.

but just to improve upon this level, you could tweak various camera angles during the rollercoaster ride to show off your fantastic scenery. And maybe the start of the rollercoaster ride calls for a song change.

Four stars for the great idea!

I actually played this level a while back and really enjoyed it!

It was a fun level that anyone could enjoy and there was just something about this level that really drew me in.

The gameplay was easy, but fun and the scenery looked pretty good throughout almost the entire level!

I gave it :star::star::star::star:!

I'll now have to play some of your other levels!

Could you do F4F on my level The Unfair Platformer.

Thanks!

My girlfriend picked that music for the ride itself... not my fav at all, but I left it as is as I absorb the PS3 quite a bit of the time and want to keep peace in the family.

Interesting thoughts on the camera angle. I have one camera set to wide angle in the middle of the coaster facing to the right, but when you invert it remains to the right which was not what I would have expected. From earlier attempts, static cameras placed around the track at those speeds was sorta jerky as you cover quite a bit of ground. However, I never tried rotating a thin layer to see if that would keep the angle always pointing forward which was my original hope. ..another thought if I tried static cameras again would be making the target area huge, but that also messes with the actual bit of platforming as well unless possibly your blow out the old ones and emit new ones when the ride starts. Hmmmmm....

Great food for thought if I were to ever redo this or do another one! Thanks!!

I will check your level out when I get a chance!

great level, i really likes playing it. the gameplay was good and you kept it exciting. i liked the part where you saw the tiny lake. there were only a few small problems i saw. when you ride the bus, sackboy's head sticks out of the top... making it look funny. also the boats are too small to get on, so its hard to move on the lake. also there is a line in the bottom of the stairs to the roller coaster, not sure what that is supposed to be. also there was a fire in front of the tent, might wanna put that out before something happens. other than that it was a great level. i only pointed out the bad things because there were too many good things to list. 4 stars

dont forget to play my level: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13329

Thanks and glad you had fun! Appreciate your comments.

Hmmm... well sackboy was never one to sit down while riding, especially on a bus. I wanted him to have plenty of jump and headroom.

The boats are props and only on thin layers. If I had it to do over, it might have been fun to make them so you could ride and add some platforming around that.. ah well..

Line at the bottom of the stairs? Hmmm.. I remember making that a bit segmented so I could pull it apart and work on the coaster lift. Maybe I got that a bit wonky somehow. I will have to check it out. ..it wasn't "supposed" to be anything at least!

..and the campfire.. well campers in this part of the world love their toasted marshmellows and hot dogs!!

Thanks so much! I will take a look at your level as soon as I get a chance!! Hopefully today or later this evening.

I really enjoyed my adventure in Tiny Town. It is incredibly cute and fun to play.

I loved the cute little helicopter with the brilliant little rotor on the back and the barn owl and the even cuter little airplane I just wanted to squidge!. The coaster ride was brilliant too, very scenic.

A lovely level with a very high cutesisity factor.

I said cute about 356 times, sorry about that!

Thanks so much and please squidge away!!! I really loved doing this level. Glad you had fun!!

The original plan was the airplane on the runway was supposed to take off during the coaster ride when you zoom by, but the thermometer nixed that plan as well as the fireworks show that I had to back out.. I really wanted the fireworks as having them showing in the bedroom window at the end would have been awesome.. OOooooh well.. Thanks again!

I did really like this level! However, it made me sad that the visauls hadn't been as taken care of as they could have been... :S

But, I've gotta say, that the gameplay was by far enjoyable, and that I did really love how you kept switching to completly different zones, be it via helicopter or whatever.

There are a few things that I think you might we interested to know, so you can think about and maybe fix them:

When first running into that factory, it's difficult to see that way up, using the door. Could you indicate it somehow?
I dunno why, but there was black gas over those hexagons in the factory. Was that really necessary?
And the last thing; the bus was like REALLY slow. I would have enjoyed more if it was faster!

Just keep in mind those were little nit-picks.

Overall, I did really love the concept of this levels. I've played many coaster levels, but this was the first one on wich I actually knew the landscape, and by so, I did enjoy it much more.

Keep up the great job *cough*and take more care of the aesthetics*cough, cough*

4 stars

EDIT: As for the F4F, I'd like you to give it on my incoming level, Lafarge's Request. I shall PM you when the time comes ^,^

The path over the top is hinted via the magic mouth cutscene on that first tv set, but maybe you didn't get over quite far enough as I think I had it a bit small so it didn't trigger when up above. I've learned since not to depend on those and to use a camera instead as I like how you can set the zone better. Good catch!

The gas? ..well, I guess I didn't want you down there! Seemed like a good way at the time to say stay off bad stuff will happen! Actually it was my 2nd level and hard to say what the heck I was thinking at the time!!

..now the bus speed is a safety issue ya see. Our drivers are trained professionals and they can't be uhhh... oh well. I've gotten quite a bit of grief over that bus speed. Believe it or not, I actually have sped it up from the original speed!! Basically it was a ridiculously steep grade and not sure how much faster it go without it just sliding on down!! I've had comments left on the level saying... Dude!! I can run down that road faster than that bus!!

As far as the decoration, I had forgotten since I had done this back in March, but my thermometer was full. I had posted earlier in the thread that I have a bit left, but nope. I checked last night and it was truly at the limit and now remember why I didn't decorate nearly as much as I wanted. Whoops! Makes me sad too! I am going to try revisiting to see if I can reclaim enough thermo to decorate it more as I've learned quite a few tricks since then!!

Thanks so much for your comments! Just send me a visitor message to remind me and I will be happy to check it out once you have published! If you would like someone to play test, just add me and send a key.

Thanks again!!

I really enjoyed that level. It was a cute idea, and it was executed well. I liked the scenery and style, it was basic but effective. The way the roller coaster went through most of the play area and then into space was great to watch, though I didn't really understand the ending. Was it a dream? Anyway, it was an overall fun level, but it wasn't perfect in my opinion. Some areas were really well done, and others lacked detail. The stairs leading to the first helicopter led straight to the ground and were just very basic. This didn't look good, especially when compared with other areas that exhibited a great deal of detail. Another big problem for me was that the level didn't really feel like it had direction to it. I never really knew where to go, and it felt more like I was stumbling along and finding the next part by chance, rather than progressing through the level. Also, I don't like randomly falling in levels, it just feels messy. Arrows helped a little, but it felt forced, and there wasn't really a natural flow at work. In the building with the door that you hop onto, I wasn't really sure if I was going the right way, because the first time I landed down onto those generator things, I died. I figured it was the wrong was, so I walked around a little more, and couldn't find anywhere else to go, so I just went there again but slightly over and I was fine. I wasn't sure if I was exploiting the level or if that was how it was designed. It took me forever to find the helicopter at the barn, I kept looking around for it, only for it to traipse in seemingly at it's leisure. The roller coaster was well done, it was smooth and ran very well. Overall, I thought it was a cute level, and in the end, it was fun. I gave it :star::star::star::star: and a "Cute" tag.

Well.. maybe the ending didn't quite translate the way I had hoped, but no.. to answer your question it was not a dream. It was a little boy and his beloved teddy bear playing in his room the entire time. That is why the bear is your tour guide and the one in charge. ..the finish is that the ride was interrupted by the knocking at the door and the "Timmy... time to go to bed" and you see his room with all the main elements in the level. The coaster was really just his wooden toy train on the floor. When I was a small boy, I had a really active imagination (uhhh still do!) We didn't have video games back then so everything was possible, but usually involved elements you had around you!

Appreciate your comments! I am hoping to reclaim some thermo and decorate a bit more. This was my 2nd level and wasn't that great at knowing what was wasteful when creating.. I learned quite a bit the hard way as I am sure we all have. I hit the max on this one and it unfortunately shows.

The barn helicopter was a problem. I probably should have emitted the thing and left it waiting, but I also enjoyed the small challenge of jumping for it. I simply have it with a switch set to on and had it moving back and forth once you trip the relay at the lake. It is such a long trip to the airport that it just takes some time for it to cycle back and forth. I think around 19 secs? ..and if you arrive just after it left.. oops!!

I will check your level out asap!!!

Thanks again for your comments! Means quite a bit for folks to take so much time commenting. Really helps getting another perspective on your creations and whether you are in the ballpark or just lost in the parking lot.

Ok, that does make a lot of sense. That's probably more an issue of my ability to process basic things than your execution of an idea. It is a very cute idea, and I had totally overlooked the bear at the beginning, I just shrugged it off. It does all piece together very well though.

There are many methods you can use to lower your thermometer usage, but you probably know most of them. For a second level attempt, you did a great job, so don't let my criticisms be off-putting. The major thing to remember that will drastically reduce your thermometer space is to not use unneeded materials. The inclusion of a new material makes the thermometer jump up. I noticed this in your level, and though I can't mention any specific areas off the top of my head, a quick run-through should show you where to edit. If you can find areas where there are materials you only used once, go back and change them into a material that is already used in the level. This is a great way to save thermometer space, and it shouldn't hurt your visuals if done correctly.

What you can do is place it on two pistons so that it looks something like this:

x
|
y-----------------------------Helicopter

The x is a piece of dark matter. The lines indicate two separate pistons. The one between x and y is triggered after the generator goes off, and it drops the helicopter into the player's sight. The helicopter has a grab switch on it that triggers the second piston to drop you off at the destination. You should never see y, which can be a block of wood or something else that is solid, you can do this by making the piston not totally retract to 0.0 or even close to that, just enough so that it lands the player at their destination.

No problem, that's the over-arching goal of F4F, and from the looks of it as a whole, it works spectacularly.

Hmmm... that is an interesting idea. I will have to play around a bit with that when I get a chance. I had tried something similar for a weird device on my level in progress with pistons arranged like that and found that the 2nd piston (the lower one) would in essense would bend at the joint making the movement a bit wonky. ..like it was sagging! ...however, now that I think about it, I don't think I tried it quite the way you have it shown here. Thanks for the tip and appreciate the follow up!!!

Have a great weekend!

In spite of popular opinion, I really like the affectionate little monsters it's nice that you arn't forced into killing them. I'm happy to let them follow me around. Also, I think it underlines the nature of a day-dream while playing with toys.

Smart use of magic mouth at the 1st gen switch where you are getting points while reading the prompt. Actually, all through the level you used prompts really well and had good placement of your check-points. alot of creators don't seem to consider the effect of those things; putting a check point directly infront of a jump where it messes with timing as it activates or putting prompts where they steal focus at critical times.

The helicopter...when I played it through the first time, I had another player with me, and we started thinking it was a lag-hindered switch when the heli went away and didn't come back for a while. A quick, thermo-economic solution might be to add text to the magic mouth before it. somthing like "The tiny town shuttle service heli doesn't like to stop, so jump for it", or, for non english readers a little plaque (excuse the super crude emote)

The bus: I agree that the bus is a bit slow. it's faster to just walk down the hill, although every time I played, I allways drove the bus because, well, who secretly doesn't want to drive the bus?

all these things are super minor. all in all, I really like this level and those who were with me for my first go around enjoyed them-selves.

Thanks so much for the kind words and appreciate you taking the time to play my little bedroom playtime adventure.

Yeah.. I think the reason I made the creatures safe is I envisoned them being a toy that he didn't really like that much. So not deadly, but just tempting enough to stomp on them like playing with bubble pack.

I have since attempted to add some much needed decoration to it especially to the landscape, but every time I reclaim enough thermo and attempt it pistons on the power station become juddery.. Grrrr.. I haven't given up completely, but trying to finish up the last testing of my new one before attempting again.

Good call on the extra magic mouth.. that might just be the easy fix needed as this one suffered the dreaded 160 hour limit due to my leaving it in play almost the entire time. Imagine building a world while a roller coaster is wizzing by your head ever so often?! It was pretty comical. To complete, I had to rely on a backup that was a few days earlier.

Thanks again and glad you enjoyed!
