Garden Grove

Archive: 7 posts

Hey guys, if you get the time please check out my level 'Garden Grove', my PSN is Rich-185, the level patch is located in South America This is my first publicised level and i have been working on it for about 5 months! Please be sure to get the right level, I believe there is another with the same name, my patch features a blue sky, grass and the sun.

The level features a swamp, a climb to giddying heights, a deadly cave and a rickety old bridge across a waterfall to name but a few!

I have spent a lot of time trying to add lots of fun features and detail to the level, for example, i created my own switch mechanisms so that in-game sounds (breaking sound effects, etc) would only play once to go with the gameplay, so that if some wood snapped you wouldn't get the sound effect again by running back past

If you would like to offer criticism of the level you are most welcome, and leave your level name and i will leave feedback on yours. Of course, if you would simply like to play it then forget it, you are welcome to.

Hope you enjoy!

Hi Rich and welcome.

That sounds very interesting and I'll definitely check it out later. It's 1:30 here now and I'm off to bed unless I fall asleep at the keyboard.

So right off the bat, I don't think this is a level that belongs on the ground. The ground for the background you chose is made out of brick, and you have a garden/nature level. It just doesn't fit. I suggest that you make a large block of grass or some other material and place the entire level onto that. The trees weren't glued to the ground so I could easily pull them over. There were random beach balls and champagne bottles, no clear level design or aim really. It was hard to figure out where to go, and most people aren't going to realize they have to roll a golf ball over to some random block that they pull down then jump on to get up to the next area. None of those things relate in any way, so it just doesn't feel like it was well thought out. The overuse of pre-made objects was also a negative point, especially since they didn't fit into the theme in any way. The skateboard part was fun, but generic as there are thousands of skateboard related levels, and it still didn't relate to the title of your level at all. I liked the cave bit, the platforming and lighting was well done. The bridge, waterfall effect, and windmill were all nice, and I could see that the level was starting to come together at this point into a coherent design. The problem was that it ended there. I gave it :star::star: and a "Points-Fest" tag. This level, especially the first 75% of it, needs some serious work done on it to give it sense of direction and the polish it needs to be a good level. The random bits of colored lights and bubbles and other sections looked sloppy and out of place, as did unglued trees and a heavy use of pre-made objects. It does have a good basic idea, you just need to do some work on the execution of it all.

For F4F, please play my LittleBigMemory level: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13198

This was a cute level, but I too agree with BSprague the beginning of the level was out of place and chaotic with no real flow. But the end actually had some platforming and interesting player made models, the windmill was very good.

I'd say work on the randomness of the level and its aesthetics and you will have yourself a good level worth playing.

:star::star: and cute tag.

Also for the F4F you could give me Underground series a go if you want:

Hi . I've played your level and here is my feedback

Pros :

Some nice custom design.

Fun beginning.

Cons :

You need to tell players they need prizes switched on to collect the cloud sticker at the start. Mine are always off so I missed that.

Strangely went into a cave when the level was called Garden Grove.

That cave section is very annoying. It was way too dark and the pillars that crush you were virtually impossible to see. The first one is impossible to see because it's hidden behind the foreground.

Too many MM items. I thought it was great for a start when you had some homemade stuff but then a lot of story mode stuff appeared and it seemed a strange mix. Using a lot of story mode stuff is generally frowned on with the discerning creators on this site.

Overall :

What started out as a very promising level and could have been fun turned into a bit of a mish mash of design and then just a series of cheap deaths as I lost every life in that terrible cave section.

My F4F levels are below. Just pick any you fancy.

Firstly, thanks for all the feedback. I am aware that the level isn't as highly polished as some others out there, and i agree that the level doesn't necessarily play out to a coherent structure or plan, but this was my first level so i was just experimenting and having some fun

I think you can see how I have been learning to create as the level progresses, the start of the level was made the first day i had the game, and the cave section, waterfall and windmill were made 2, 3 and 4 months later when i've had time.

I am currently working on a couple of properly planned out levels with running themes and thought-out objectives, keep an eye out for Ice Mountain Rescue and Building 2019 (working title).

I'll f4f your levels soon when i get the chance to play them.
