Hoola Man Jenkins' Cabin **Part 1** (NEED OPINIONS) **UNIQUE STORY****VERY DETAILED**

Archive: 17 posts

I just published what I was planning on being one long level. Unfortunately, I've been putting so much detail into it that I ran out of room about 1/4 of the way through. It's a very unique/fun/interesting level with a very engaging, unique story-line. I just wanted a few people's opinions on it before I continue with the rest of the level. (I've already designed the whole thing, so it shouldn't be TOO long til we can see the whole story unfold.

What I really want to know is this: Was the detail worth making this into two parts? Because I really wanted to make this into one level for many reasons, the main one being that the story doesn't flow as well when you have to load up part two. Also, I'm afraid that people will play only part one, or part 2 first. So, I have LOTS of concerns about it.

THE LEVEL IS LOCKED right now, so to access it, play my "copyable level lock" level, and once you open the dor, the key for "Hoola Man Jenkins' Cabin" is floating in the top right area of the scoreboard.

I don't want to give too much away, because I really want you to play this! But here's one snapshot of it. This doesn't do it justice at all, but it's just to get you intrigued:

Looks very detailed, I'll go check it out!
EDIT: Interesting, indeed.
Pros:
- I like how you start it out in a moving car, that's always cool.
-You wrecked a cabin, so now you have to seek out a forest genie? That's so crazy, I love it!
-Very beatifully made forest near the end.
Cons:
-The bit with raccoon seemed kinda pointless. Was I supposed to do something with him?
-You had a bunch of visible switches

I liked the direction of the story, though. Keep it up!

Thanks for testing it out for me! Where were the visible switches?

And the bit with the raccoon is a bit random. I was thinking about taking it out, but it does actually have a point. If you take the raccoon one of the pillows from the bed before you wreck the cabin he gives you some points...

Kinda dumb, haha.

There was one by the boulder when you crash the car (or on the car itself, I'm not sure), a proximity near the raccoon, and a global switch right in front of the cabin. 2009-07-04 08:49:00

Ah, yes. I'll fix those tomorrow. What's your opinion on the details though? I'm pretty sure the bulk of the space is being used by the trees and the huge amount of wires it took to make the cabin collapsing scene. I'm just really upset that I'm going to have to break this up into two parts.2009-07-04 09:02:00

(Sorry this took so long)
Level breakdown Pt 2:
-I really like the level of detail on the car at the beginning. Little rust stickers on the tires, even!
-The title sequence fit very well, and I enjoyed it. Players might miss the actual title coming down behind them, though.
-The bridge was very nice, because it wasn't just a straight run-across. You had to hop between them, which helped to strecth out the level.
-The trees varied in sized greatly, which also caught my eye. It made it just that much better.
-I tried the bit with the raccoon this time. You might want to shrink him a bit, he was rather large.
-The cabin's design was okay. A little plain, but it didn't really matter since you destroy it.
-The ending part was beautiful! I liked all the small things you put in, like the little river effect, and the sun up in the corner.
Again, I think it's great in the direction it's heading, and I look forward to more.

Thanks for playing it again! Do you think that breaking it in to two parts will hurt the flow of the story? (And the number of plays it will get?)2009-07-05 16:23:00

I haven't played this yet but I will ( do I need a code to get the key ? ) because if you've played my levels you'll know I'm into detail myself so from my point of view definitely keep the detail as much as you can even if that means spreading the story over several levels.

I know exactly what you mean about the thermo though and it does seem especially bad with custom made trees if they're made of lots of parts or particularly intricate. I made some olive trees for my commando level and as soon as I placed 2 or 3 in the level the thermo went up 1/4 instantly.

It meant I had to make the level shorter than planned but that's just the way it had to be because I thought they looked great and the scene was in greece so they had to stay.

I look forward to playing yours anyway.

Thanks! And I have played your levels. I absolutely loved Sheriff Sack.

The code on my level lock level is Orange, Cherry, Apple. The Key is in the top right corner of the scoreboard.

Thanks in advance for playing it!

EDIT: THIS LEVEL IS NO LONGER LOCKED. But I will be taking it down in the next couple days because I intend on officially publishing it with the other parts of the TRILOGY. (After some observations creating part 2, I've decided to go all out with the details and make this story absolutely stunningly awesome all the way through. Why not?)

You keep surprising me, AppelesJr. With your previous level you REALLY nailed gameplay and made it fun, and now you've created a fantastic look for this level. It's nicely stylized and is really beautiful to look at. Also, the character designs are spot-on. I can't wait to see the finished product.2009-07-06 13:30:00

Just played this, and wow is it beautiful. Sadly, very short... but absolutely gorgeous. I did experience one "cheap" death. Not even sure what happened, I think the points (branches) of one of the trees got me (is that even possible?) either that, or I got squished in the tiny space under the tree. Anyway.. aside than that, no problems other than being left desperately wanting more. 2009-07-06 16:16:00

Okay. Now I wanna play LBP again! >:O

Seriously! I love the humour in your Demon lord levels. And since this is all about the unusual story, I wanna play it.

Plus I really really have to get back to creating some stuff. I'll try tell you what I think when I get round to that man.

Oh just read your last post. Have you worked on the other parts yet?? You're bringing it all out at once... any chance I could still try this? I'll probably message you on psn.

That did happen to me one time on the tree to the left of the checkpoint after the big collapsing scene. I'll put some dark matter there so you cant run under it maybe?

And Pitcard, I talked to you on PSN.

....I don't know why I wrote that for everyone to read.

Ok, THIS LEVEL HAS NOW BEEN DELETED.

It will be published again with the completed Hoola Man Jenkins' Cabin TRILOGY.

Part 2 is now almost half done, so expect a release in a couple weeks.

For those who missed the preview, if you REALLY want to play it, let me know here and I'll send you a key.

THANKS EVERYBODY!
