Your stance on vehicle stages

Archive: 10 posts

I'm just wondering how people feel towards vehicle stages.

I've made some pretty tough platforming levels, and I want to try designing more visually pleasing levels, as my first stages look about as good as, well.....something that doesn't look very good at all. I figured a good way to start would be designing a vehicle stage. I don't want to make it bland though, so I was wondering how you feel towards vehicle stages, and what do you like in vehicle stages? Do you like when the environment changes? Jumps? Explosions?

I like it when vehicle levels look great but most of all that they take some skill to beat. For example, one that you have to press X the fastest or sticker something the fastest or that you have to let go of R1 at the right moments.2009-07-03 01:47:00

Arbitrary Family Guy reference, ftw?

Anyways, if you want to make an interesting race, mess with the global lighting tool throughout, and try to make the areas that you are racing through somewhat interesting. Also, as brnxblze said, races that require some kind of talent/skill are infinitely better than the "hold R1" races.

People much prefer vehicle levels to have skill involved, but I think what people struggle to do is get the background interesting - but not distracting.2009-07-03 07:22:00

I don't mind racing levels if they have really good visuals. Although the average "Grab R1" races are now extremely repetitive for me. You should add some sorts of challenge into it.2009-07-03 09:00:00

Something I'd really like to see revisited in a racing level is MM's original racing level's concept, where you had a limit of 'fuel'. That was really neat. If you expanded on that you could have much more strategy involved and maybe even have refueling powerups or something.

Another concept idea that I had for a racing level but wasn't really able to test, was switching layers in a vehicle. I was thinking if you made a vehicle disappear and reappear in the same instant, but reappearing in a different layer, the vehicle would switch layers. The hard part would be making it seamless so the player doesn't feel like he's been suddenly slowed down or sped up. I'm not really sure if it would work at all, but it's an idea...

^^ For that, I'd probably add a wall to cover the process, and also make the projectory of the vehicle at top acceleration, so by then, when the player switches cars and has already grabbed the accelerator, they won't notice the difference (except for a change in layer .)

What I find in a vehicle level is theme. Such as, what's the main goal? What must you achieve to reach the goal? What obstacles are in between me and the goal? Is there anything visually interesting between me and the goal? So, if you summarize it, I care about what I see and do between where I start and where I end. Oh, and collapsing buildings are always cool in a race.

ooooh yeah that would be really cool. If the environment changed as you went on it. Like Outlaw said, collapsing buildings, or avalanches, and anything else you can think of!

It would be neat if you tried to make an actual kind of gravel road thing made of tiny pieces of material, like stone.

It can also be made resettable quite easilly for powerups. It's really just a fancy timer when you get down to it.

As for making it the vehicle layer-switching, you can emit the vehicle to another layer from a speed controlled follower - but this wouldn't work now I thik of it because the follower follows at different distances depending on speed. So the position would be out. Plus the drive wheels won't be at the right speed... Hmmm, you could probably make something that would just about hang together, but I doubt it would be just right, you know?

I'm not that fussed about vehicle levels, but just make sure there is something to do in them

Just wait for ModNation Racers! Nah, but seriously, some vehicle levels can be fun, as long as you don't just hold R1 and watch it.2009-07-03 11:56:00
