IGN Level Lovers Anonymous - really?

Archive: 44 posts

So, as most of you all know, IGN picks 5 levels for everyone to look at every month or so... I generally ignore these kind of sites, but I was bored and stopped by.

What is with the 5 levels they chose? The Killzone one wasn't bad, but they actually featured a level that was composed of just dark matter and a jetpack and a level that had H4H in the title... What's the point of doing the article if you aren't even going to try?

I apologize if one of your levels was selected (I doubt it), but this list is pure mediocrity.

Edit: Link (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/100/1000484p1.html)

Also, I know some of you appreciate the music levels, but they are boring for me.

It would help if you placed a link to the site m8, so anyone who didn't know about it can check it out and have an opinion in this as well.2009-07-02 18:34:00

Promoting H4H levels?
eesh... >_>

Yeah, some of them are bad, altho they do have a couple of good ones.
But still, if they're showing any bad levels, they're not doing their job right!

The Snaggleking level is good. Don`t think he creates anymore which is a shame as he has a few good ones.

But yeah IGN picks tend to be pretty poor when they do them

I sent in a few picks from the 'levels endorsed by' thread in 'Recommendation', so hopefully if they do this again, they will have some better levels featured.2009-07-02 19:20:00

i like all of snaggle's levels (have him on my buddy list) but unfortunately he hasn't hopped on LBP in at least a month.

in other news, he's a trophy gathering machine. he's a level 12 with 791 trophies

I was thinking the same thing when I saw it. They used pick good levels but now I think they just say "aw what the hell, who cares, let's just pick the first 5 levels we find." It's a shame the TheJollyRajah's music level got picked when a H4H level did. That Ducktales song he did was great. I knew IGN took a turn for the worst when they picked that pie eating contest last time around. I mean seriously, all you did was mash R1 as fast as possible.2009-07-03 07:08:00

Yeah, IGN seems to have dropped the ball on this one. I agree that in past times they've featured some of the best - A couple from MrSuperComputer and a brilliant Ccubagge level.2009-07-03 07:21:00

Yeah, that was ridiculous. But picking a level with H4H in the title, IGN has taken it to a new level. Bravo for such an epic fail IGN.

IGN is now no different than the community which lately have been giving high ratings and hearts to complete and utter garbage. I can't wait for the new web portal thing.2009-07-03 17:01:00

Ooh, me either. I actually am looking forward to this more than online create.

The general gaming media knows absolutely nothing about Little Big Planet from my experience, especially dealing with them in interviews and in reading through alot of editorial on the game. The general gamer public doesn't know too much about it either, and a community like ours is a very niche audience and subculture.

They did pick some good stuff a few times, but have always picked terrible levels along with it. Stuff H.A.T.E., Splat Invaders (I think), The Movies and Jack McSetback were all pretty great, that I remember seeing on there... plus they were one of the major gaming sites to do a feature on our Contra levels so I can't hate on them too much ... but they've always had an unhealthy dose of terrible levels that reflect the same mentality in the LBP player base that goes into every legitimate masterpiece ending up with 1 to 3 stars.

Same here. I'm not too crazy about online create to be honest. I'll probably only use it to show friends stuff, but not for any serious creating. I can already work on levels with other people without it. When the web portal thing comes out, I'm going to organize massive lists of great levels that nobody is playing. I'm tired of seeing these awesome levels that came out months ago but only have less than 100 plays and a few hearts while Torture Miley Cyrus 7 and Bomb Level 12,349 get a billion plays.

What's happened? They used to showcase a lot of good levels, but this isn't very good. That music level is pure awesome but, promoting a h4h level? Enough said really.2009-07-03 22:05:00

The spotlighted H.A.T.E. so they are cool with me. I do think that they could do a better job, but I am actually surprised they are still spotlighting this far after the release of LBP.2009-07-04 07:50:00

Yes, I think that might be the problem. I think that none of the good levels are getting nominated anymore.

I nominated about 7 of the best levels I could think of - so I'm doing my part.

How do you nominate something? I'd be glad to do my part and nominate a few gems that I know of. Anything to keep the H4H nonsense from getting any more attention. 2009-07-04 16:54:00

There's some kind of email address on the site. You send an email to tell them about a level. I've never done it myself, so maybe someone else can give the exact address.

That's the whole point of level lovers anonymous - general plays see something they like and tell them about it. Not sure about how exactly they decide after that what goes on the list.

They don't give a direct E-mail address - you have to fill out a form, which can be found here: http://ps3.ign.com/email.html

Just put "LBP LLA" in the subject box.

I was just about to post this exact thread!!

But I'm not surprised at all to see that I was beaten to it, I think it was obvious to anyone who read this article how absolutely little effort had been put into it.

I mean seriously, it's as though he only bothered to play through about 10 levels before he made his selection. I mean it's been a couple of weeks since the last IGN picks, and these were the best levels he's played in that time!?

It just upsets me how many amazing creators receive no recognition for the work that they do, but someone's barely thought-out dark matter maze (with a badly spelled PS3 fanboy quiz thrown in for good measure) is shown off as one of the best levels out there? I'm grateful for IGN for continuing to showcase levels, but if they're not even going to bother then I'd rather they just quit while they're (slightly) ahead.

I really think the H4H level was nominated for the lulz, either that or the creator convinced his friends to second the nomination or something 2009-07-05 13:05:00

I wonder if IGN would be open to the suggestion of using the Spotlight levels. It would save them going to the effort of searching through levels as all they`d be doing is taking what we`d put forward.2009-07-05 16:04:00

That's a great idea, Matt. Would you be willing to contact them about this? The only problem with this is that it would only feature levels that are on this site. Others might feel un-included (discluded?)2009-07-05 16:06:00

It would have to be ConfusedCartman that contacts them I'm guessing. My reasoning is that it looks like IGN really aren`t trying anymore and at least this way they'll still get some quality levels to put on their site.

Even if it`s not the Spotlight, but rather a selection made by people who play the game pretty much every day. Maybe have a team, seperate to the Spotlight team (don`t fancy giving myself more work) who pick 10 levels a week/month/whatever and submit them. All IGN would have to do is copy + paste it onto their website.

It would be kind of cross-site bias... even if it's in our favor. Some of the levels picked for the spotlights could be questionable to people as well... but 99% of the time it's on point, and alot more consistent and high quality than it used to be. Ccubbage really molded into what it is now, the crew seems to communicate better, the layout and format etc is very polished and organized, and the abundance of high quality levels/creators on the site has grown making it easier than ever to find a handful of levels that really scream 5 star quality... not so much padding or going through the motions. Now it looks like it's just hard to split hairs between all the good stuff, and keep up with it all.

Less drama after the picks are announced too lol

Then again... we do seem to be the only site with a substantial amount of serious, quality headliners being promoted on a regular basis, and big enough traffic to meet the demand, so I can't think of a better site to handle the duty if they were going to outsource.

I think the problem is whoever is picking the levels doesn't really play LBP very seriously. That along with what I already said, not enough good levels are nominated.

I mean not only did that level have 'H4H' in the title, it was an incredibly ugly, boring level. I don't think any active member of the community would put that on a list. Whoever makes them probably just boots up LBP when the editor says 'Ok! Make another LLA feature!'

Wouldn't be the first time to be let down by ign, just keep you expectations to an all time low. Odd how I just recently played one of those levels and gave it a 2 stars, meh.2009-07-06 20:13:00

Wow this is a terrible list, I can't believe they put a H4H level in there. The only other Level Lovers Anonymous I've seen from IGN is when they featured my level The Unfair Platformer, so I'm not sure if this is just a bad week for them or they are usually this bad.2009-07-08 19:16:00

Awe, the one time I make the list, and everyone calls it garbage... Some people really don't realize how much work goes into one of my 8 bit music levels. Sort of makes me feel like I'm part of the problem.

It's alright though, I haven't been playing LBP much lately anyways. So IGN picking me is like icing on the cake. :]

Actually they've been pretty bad for a while not only this week. I was saying your level was one of the bright spots, maybe the only one, of this one. You just have the bad luck of getting picked at the same time as some pretty bad levels.

I didn't even read the list to know you were on there, JollyRajah lol... I should really just stop going with what the last person said.

I couldn't make a music level if my life depended on it, or even think about making something like Concrete Man.
