Need some computer help... please :)

Archive: 6 posts

Hey guys, basically tomorrow I'm ordering a new computer.
Incase you're interested:
AMD Phemon X4 940 (3.0ghz) processor
4GB RAM
1GB Radeon HD 4890 graphics card
750GB Hard Drive

and then the usual stuff with it.

However, I'm not using a monitor as my monitor. I'm using my Samsung 26" HDTV as my monitor. Now, i've plugged it all up to my laptop and it runs great at the 1360x768 resolution which it allows. BUT, it can't run any other PC resolutions except 800x600 and 1024x768. Will this cause problems when I try to run games? Cause some put a default resolution on, and this would cause my TV to not display anything then.

Basically, is using my TV as a monitor (cause I don't have a PC one) going to be okay?

I can't speak to the specifics of your system but I've been using my Samsung DLP 46" TV as a monitor for years and I've never had any trouble. I just messed around with the screen settings in Windows until it looked legible and it seemed to work just fine.2009-07-02 18:26:00

As morganna says, often you just have to faff around with the settings, but you can do it with faff, you don't really need to know what your doing (it's just quicker if you do )

With regards to games, if the game starts up in a res you can't display this could cause a problem, but most games that I've played can be run in a windowed mode, so the actual display resolution would be your desktop res. You can alter the game's video settings to a res that you can display and then switch back to fullscreen.

I think for the most part you should be fine.

Cheers guys! If anyone else has more info on this, it would be great. I was just thinking about the solution you mentioned rtm, but i know the odd game will be a hassle to get into it. It's okay cause I know exactly what I'll be doing, but I've barely used Vista (which it has) so it may take me a bit longer xD2009-07-02 18:43:00

I've played a lot of games using my TV as a monitor, and the only one that was a jerk was Mirror's Edge. There was a text file I could edit to window it, though, so I managed to tame it, too. So, don't worry about it, it'll be fine.2009-07-02 18:48:00

Wouldn't it window mode even if you right clicked it, and edited the path name so it has '-w' at the end? Cause that usually does the trick. But cheers! I'm glad other people don't seem to be having major problems
