I love manga, both reading and writing it. I'm a huge fan of Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, Urusei Yatsura, Kimagure Orange Road, Kodomo No Omocha, and Dr. Slump!2009-07-02 00:35:00

Used to collect alot of comics and manga when I was younger and still them all in storage. My favorites were pretty run of the mill must-haves, almost anything Dark Horse retranslated in the 90's... Blade of the Immortal, Akira, Lone Wolf Cub, Oh My Goddess, What's Michael, Otomo etc

Lone Wolf and Cub is far and away my favorite body of work... it's epic, and the art style and storytelling is so influential to some of the best western comic artists. Even Frank Miller cites it as one of his biggest influences.

I kind of lost touch with it when anime and manga started getting really popular.

I only read one piece so far, not that big fan of it, if there's a anime of it I'll just watch that instead.2009-07-02 03:01:00

So there's someone involved.
I enjoy a lot of them.
@xkappax, I see you're fond of old stuff, especially from Rumiko Takahashi, I never read Orange Road, but my favourite manga is B@stard!!, from Kazushi Hagiwara, that was the main assistent and main drawer of Orange Road.
@ninja, great, I see that you like a lot of seinen, Oh My Goddess is very funny, and Blade is really Epic!
@Jack, I LOVE ONE PIECE! great story, I think that it's a masterpiece, the best shonen ever.

i couldn't find it. Where do i get like a really awesome manga?

I did find naruto a naruto manga somewhere at a local store, but i think naruto is getting pretty lame after having seen so many more awesome animes (like death note, one piece and eureka seven...)

Does anybody know you can read manga online? Cause I'm telling you!
www.onemanga.com
www.mangavolume.com

After having said that, I've readen and enjoyed (from these sites) these ones:
1-Vinland saga
2-Gantz
3-Monster
4-Full metal alchemist
5-One piece

Yeah, that's also my "top5" ^,^

I dodn't really read it, but I enjoy drawing it. I'm only a nooby Manga-Ka with just 3 images under my belt, but I'd say i'm pretty decent at it. I Really need to invest in some proper software. Drawing anga with MS Paint is like trying to cook a 3-michelin star meal on a camping stove!

Sorry... I went a bit too far with this. But this got me reminiscing on all the manga I used to read. Maybe I'll do my own one some day... probably a graphic novel or something would be cool. I used to hold making my own manga as my highest aspiration... seriously O_o

A lot of these you can find on either
www.onemanga.com
OR
www.mangavolume.com
OR
www.mangafox.com

Dark Sci-Fi / Film Noir

-Gantz is one I'm still following atm. Highly mature gore-fest full of very raw emotions and weird looking aliens... who don't think twice about cutting the main characters in half.
Pretty insane art style, as its put through a lot of computer rendering and effects, with photographic backgrounds.

-Blame! has got one of my favourite styles. The artist is an architect himself, and incorporates some of the most imaginative architectural designs into his manga. This one is all about action flow. There is hardly any dialog, and when there is you'll have a hard time following what the characters are talking about. Set farfarfar into a distant future... full of different humanoid species and forgotten and decaying technology. Its dark, technical, disjointed and bleak.
Abara and Biomega both by the same artist (Tsutomu Nihei) are worth looking into aswell.

Action / Adventure / Shounen

-At the moment, I'm still reading Naruto up to date...... Its a bit up and down, but I really enjoy some of Masashi's ideas and designs... he's really created a very credible and exciting world of ninja's. And its coming towards an end so I might as well see it through.

-Bleach... I really couldn't be bothered with. I read up until they went off to fight Aizen. It just got completely ridiculous. He brings in a new character at least every chapter... and never bothers to develop them. The power leveling has just gotten so insane by this stage that Aizen and Ichigo are almost Dragon Ball powerfull...... and thats pretty stoopidly powerful in the first place. It started out pretty interesting... but its completely obvious that the artist doesn't know where he's going at all.... and all he knows is to make everything ridiculously cool looking.

-Blade of the Immortal and Dr Slump are both pretty awesome, ones got some of the most beautiful manga art and the other is completely hilarious. But I've only really read the first few volumes of both.

-Akira is my favourite manga. Full stop. As far as narrative goes the manga is better than the film. Its a more complete story, and probably twice as much content than the film. It builds to a much higher climax. But the film is still definitely worth watching. Both have equal merits.
I love the art, it has influenced Naruto among others, and it certainly had an effect on me.

Crime / Detective

-Death Note is another one I've read all of. Definitely recommend it. Its quite masterfully planned out. Although the first half is much better than the second imo. Nice art, great ideas and veryvery heavy on dialog... but the art keeps it fresh.

-MPD Psycho, I haven't really read much. Mostly because it was really mature and had very edgy schizophrenic characters. Its got some really brilliant art though.

-Oldboy... I was really disappointed with. It felt like it was going somewhere for the whole thing. Until the very last bit at the end.... BUT the movie which is based on the manga, has a completely different ending. Its absolutely the most shocking ending you'll see in a film... probably. The film's pretty mature so not for kids. Park Chan-wook is a brilliant director. His latest one "I'm a Cyborg, but thats OK" is worth the watch. Full of charm and almost a family movie feel to it.

Horror

-Uzumaki... Translation = Spiral. This manga is all about spirals... and how they screw a whole village over. Seriously. Very spooky stuff.

-Gyo... done by the same artist. This one's about rotting Fish carcasses on legs.... probably a lot more sickening than Uzumaki rather than spooky... I'm not gonna go into much depth to either of these, both have some pretty fun ideas and have nice art.... Not a huge fan though, but worth checking out if you're into horror manga.

Some other ones I enjoyed were Full Metal Alchemist, GTO, Hellsing, SGT Frog and Gundam Seed... but haven't really read much of.

[/end of rant]

Yeah, I love the old stuff. Started reading manga back in like 1993 or so. My first manga was Urusei Yatsura! Rumiko Takahashi is my favorite!

I forgot to mention that I also like Great Teacher Onizuka, Dragonball (regular dragonball, not really dragonball z), Trigun, Chobits, Fushigi Yuugi, and Marmalade Boy!

I'm glad to see that you all have good taste.
I really invite to read One Piece...it's a bit long but it's really addicting.
It's a manga about pirates, taking place in a very odd world.
I don't want to say much to not spoil the story but I absolutely have to say that the manga version is far superior to the anime.

Really?
Never was that interested with One Piece, i'm not saying its bad or anything, just that after 500+ they haven't really dnone a thing, you can probably watch the 1st 10-20 episodes for the introduction of the main characters then it doesn't matter if you skip to episode 500...
Altho i don't know much about the manga, but supposing how most animes follow in the manga's steps i figured it'd be the same thing.

I gues i'll give it a try whenever i get the chance and when i finish my current queue of "To read" mangas

The anime doesn't have the rhythm and the heart.
I watched some episodes of the anime efore getting into the manga, and I thought it was utterly lame.
Then I read the manga, and I got a blast!

The only things I have gotten into are:

-Full Metal Achemist anime (subbed)
-Naruto manga
-Gon manga

I've tried watching some other anime (like vampire hunter or what ever it's called), but they didn't really interest me.

You should try something a bit older.
Personally I don't like the latest Japanese Anime.
I love the ones of the 80s, because they were really handdrawed, they were art, now it's too much CG and I don't like them anymore.
Anyway I really think that Animes and Mangas are two completely different medium.
Watching anime is too much passive for my point of view.

At the moment, I'm just reading Death Note, and trying to get all 12 volumes. I'm up to 8. I've been looking for other manga to read for a while. I might start reading FMA or something once I'm done with Death Note, but I'm not sure yet.2009-07-06 16:19:00

If you can get your hands on it, read Akira!

Out of all the mangas I've read, it had the best story, and the best characters. I think its kinda hard to find online though... and I've been trying to get the volumes in shops for aaages too.

Plus no shop I've seen sells the movie. Its like its censored or something >_>

Akira, huh? I'll see what I can do. I had a buddy of mine recommend FLCL, so I might look into that as well.

Oh ye, FLCL is a good one to go for. I kinda lost interest at one point. But some bits of it were really good, plus very solid art style.

If you're looking for something a bit different. Maybe try Blame!

Its got barely any dialog and a fairly confusing plot... but I love the artwork and the action based story telling. You can really get a feeling of all the subtle motions and actions through the intricate details in the art and sound fx.

I'm scared of Japanese culture in general, and how it tends to turn Westerners into basement-dwelling anti-social psychopaths who seriously think they're wolves or demons and seriously think this kind of melodrama is realistic and that it's what they should do in they're lives. The only Japanese ANYTHING I've watched has been Pokemon. I've watched some things on Adult Swim after Metalocalypse on and the dialogue was far too corny. The bad-***** were far too cliched and apathetic, the female characters were either evil or incredibly weak and dainty, and anyone else was just stupid or a demon, and the story was so stupid that I just quit. I hate it when any westerner says some word from Japan, and I want to pull my hair out when I hear people in my school talk about Sakuras and Akirazas and Hiroshomitas.

I do have a Pokemon Manga, though. Why are they backwards? You read left-right but flip the pages right-left. IT'S CONFUZIN!

Anyway, mangas and anime scare me because people in my school believe this stuff. I'm sure we've all seen people on the internet think they were the apathetic bad-*** main character, but in real life it's a whole other thing. A girl in my school, who I found, after some snooping on Myspace, loves anime and writes these crazy stories (nothing too wrong with that). But there are incredibly weird things she writes on their blending this fantasy with reality. She writes about herself like she's a "warrior" waiting to break and, and that she "bites" and "scratches" for no reason. Recently, she brought a knife to school and planned to stab this girl because she had a dream where she killed her and "all her dreams have to come true". That's creepy.

By the way, is the whole "kill her because it was in her dream" thing from an anime or manga?

Oh, and I am no way against Manga, saying it makes people into monsters is like saying video games do that, but some people take some things too far.
