The frustratingnessness of wobble bolts

Archive: 15 posts

Does anyone understand wobble bolts?I mean really, when your tweaking them theres a circly thingy with green lines and stuff that moves and tells you how much the wobble bolts going to move and at what angle. The only problem is that its totally and compleatly not relative to the object its attached on! Its reli fudging (<--- Mmmmm fudge) annoying me coz the object just randomely turns around and hits something and disintergrates its especcially annoying wen theres a switch attached to it coz it doesnt move and you cant tell what its gonna do until the switch activates and then CRACK! equalling disintergration to the nation (<--- Tee hee i rhymed. Im a poet and i dont know it <---Tee hee I did it again) Anywho, does anyone know how to tell for certain which way it gona wobble.Thanks.

The green lines are always relative to where the bolt was originally placed. So if you place the bolt then rotate it the angles don't always make sense. I usually place it then take all the numbers down to the smallest they can be then adjust them incrementally so I don't get the snapping sound followed shortly by busted materials.

I'm sure there are creators out there who can explain a much better way of dealing with them but that's how I cope.

One of the best ways I control it is by first setting the rotation range to "zero" so that I can see the starting point.

Then, I use the angle to get it to point in the middle of the rotation (when you set the range it will rotate back and forth EXACTLY from the center of this point)

After that I can increase the rotation until it's the turning range I want.

It actually is pretty easy once you get the hang of it, but initially setting the range to zero makes it pretty easy.

Ah... Morgana just answered while I was here too (and gave a similar answer)

Ac ouple of points to throw into the mix, if you are worried about breakage, you can always turn the strength down to verify it's OK and then turn it back up again after.

Also, if you pick up an object that is attached to another, then place it down again, expect the wobble bolt to have changed its orientation. Just something to watch out for.

what i find helpfull is attaching it to a back and forth switch, this allows you to see where is will start and move it accordingly2009-07-01 21:31:00

What I do to tackle those tedious wobble bolts is set the distance of the angle to zero and slowly tweak it up so that it doesn't destroy my level. 2009-07-01 21:32:00

I just keep changing the settings, re-winding and changing the settings again until it gets what I want it to do I know thats no help at all...

Mark Healey said in an interview that he can't stand these things either, which makes me feel better

Yeah these pesky wobble bolts have always been a pain and i have to do the same as already suggested, just set it to zero movement and work up a bit at a time.

A lot of trial and error is involved ( mostly error ) until it works or ( more often than not ) it doesn't and i get peed off and scrap it and do something else.

I've noticed a new bug with them recently too whereby when I go into tweak mode the needle instead of wobbling back and forth is just spinning wildly round and round so it's impossible to tell what it's going to do. Has anyone else had this happen ??

I try to build things that use alot of wobble bolts elsewhere, in a different level hang it up in the air with a dark matter block, and play with the settings on unpause until it does what I want it to. A good way to find your start position is to attach a switch to it on directional, and make it stationary... that makes it easy to pinpoint a straight rotation point. They're troublesome when you start trying to move them around and attach them to other things, but once you get the hang of using them, they're a breeze.2009-07-02 01:28:00

That thread totally saved me when I first read it. Completely changed my ability to effectively use the wobble bolt. Now I love 'em.

I did the hard way....

1. Try it
2. Break
3. Sigh
4. Undo

I used to repeat this over and over, replacing part 3. with with more intense actions and language until either I (or the pad) broke, or it worked.

Nice suggestion about reducing the angle to zero and working from there, I'll have to give that a try.

I find them murder too. I avoid them at all costs. If I`m forced to used them, I struggle for hours pulling my hair out and swearing a lot.

Sorry that`s not much use haha!

I found Grantos's method helpful

But yeah, what rtm said. You could turn the strength down... I think "Strength" is often misleading. When you turn the strength down.. things DON'T break... but when you turn it up they do @_@ But really its how tight the bolt is... If its too tight, then it breaks. If its nice and loose, then it'll push the object as far as it will go and slip to avoid breakage.
