Inkscape Vector Graphics Illustrator

Inkscape is what I use for all my computer graphics. Inkscape is a free, easy-to-use program that allows you to draw Vector Graphics. (Graphics that save as lines and curves rather than colors of pixels so yo can zoom in as much as you want without losing quality.) I strongly recommend this to anyone who is using MS Word or is looking for a program. I hope you find this useful!

Nope

Very similar to Illustrator for those who have no shortage and cash and know the Adobe CS Suite...

Not sure what format inkscape uses, but vector files are .ai .eps .svg...

They don't use much memory and brilliant (essential) for large format graphics.

If you want a good free 3D package, check out www.daz3d.com and www.blender.org.

Photoshop also has some vetor capability, but more limited.

If you want a free version of Photoshop, try GIMP. Its not as good, but very good considering its free!

PS - does anyone know of a good free WYSIWYG web authoring package, like Dreamweaver?

Hmm - not really...

Flash is an advanced animation package and works with paths and pixel graphics but not really designed for vector artwork that much.

Illustrator is mainly used for vector graphics (although you can import pixel stuff).

The beauty of vector graphics is that it only saves certain basic information: point a, point b and vectors to draw a line between the two points. This way, the line has no pixel width, only the width you set it to have.

Shame I don't use it as much as I should - the resolution achievable far outweighs that of photoshop.

What are you talking about, Flash is ENTIRELY vectors

The only way you can use pixels with it is if you import an image, and even then you can't edit it

Have you actually used Flash before?

Not as much as Illustrator, but from what I understand, you can't do large format graphics with flash, as it's designed for web applications?

I've done some work in flash, creating interactive illustrations and menu options, but never really used paths so much.

What do you mean by large format graphics?

You can save images as things like PNGs and JPGs if that's what you mean

I'm not sure what paths are either, is that like motion tweening?

Large format is stuff that's realistically too big to print from photoshop due to the print output. i.e. bigger than maybe A2.

I know you can save as jpg and png, but if you have one of those that's the size of a 48 sheet roadside ad, you're gonna struggle in flash! Also, when parsed to jpg or png, you lose the vector attributes and quality.

The "path" is simply the line that vector graphics draws between points. Just to confuse things, you also have tween paths... :S

I'm going to have to experiment more in flash - it produces some wicked effects.

Its a shame you can't edit pixel images in flash (unless you have Fireworks as a bolt on).

Tricky!!!

As far as I know, ambigrams rely on mathematical process, but I'm not sure - bit like magic eye images (which are really cool)

All the good generators online have copyright stamped all over them, but this would be eay enough to duplicate (screendump) and use illustrator to get a good clean line.

I have had a good look for downloadable ones, but they ain't too good.

I wonder if someone can work out how they work?

BTW - have you checked out http://www.glyphusion.com/create/

dude... pre-made like ambigrams and ambigram generators are for nubs.

I am trying to be creative... and you start about generators!!! >=[

"you!!"

"who? me?!

"yeah, you! Throw this guy in the fire ... now! "

"Why?"

"'cause he likes generators!"

/looks at generator powering lightpost >_>

that's right

j/k ofcourse. But you might understand that i don't like those kinda things at all >_<

I just wanted to know a good program i can use to create the ambigram MYSELF ...

*Bows low in apology and hangs head in shame*

You're absolutely right, I should have thought better of you having seen your work.

In all seriousness though, If you can figure it out, I reckon Illustrator is the best option for this.

You can start off with a standard font to get structure, but then change it by "outlining" text, which creates the vector outlines of each letter.

You can then alter each letter in infinately fine detail. Obviously you can duplicate it and rotate over the first layer.

In the paths section, there are several tools to intersect, add or delete paths which will give you a really high finish quality.

Never used inkscape so I can't speak for it.
