Piston help

Archive: 5 posts

Okay, I'm making a scene in a new level I'm working on, and I don't exactly know how to make this one part: when the player reaches a point, they need to read three speech bubbles, then ten to fifteen seconds later, a series of sponges on pistons need to permanentley come down from the ceiling (sp?). How exactly would one go about making this?2009-07-01 05:41:00

do the sponges on pistons come down and stay there, or just suddenly work? Either way, what you need is a permanant on switch. Attatch a key switch to a piece of dark matter, then set it to inverted, and whatever type of switch you want for the pistons (directional if the pistons stay down, and on/off, if the pistons move). Place a piece of dissolve on top of that dark matter, and place a matching key on it. when the dissolve dissolves, the key will dissapear, and your switch will activate, making your sponges move.

To do a timer, simply make a block of material with a magnetic key and attatch it to dark matter via a piston. Place another piece of dark matter at the place the piston block stops, and place a key switch there. set the time the piston takes, and theres your timer! Pistons can be a little off with timing, so be careful with that. To get the timer to work, and keep working, just make the player trigger another permanant on switch (via a motion sensor), and connect the switch to the piston directionally.

LOL - Ironic that you titled the thread as you did, since I would go about this using pistons. First you'll need a permanent switch. The easiest of these is a block of dissolve with a mag key on it sitting on top of block of (whatever... dark matter, not important) with a mag switch on it set to Directional and Inverted. Use a proximity switch to trigger the dissolve and the switch will be permanently set on. (now, there are more elegant, and resettable perma-switch designs in use, but I like this one and use it all the time - just be careful you don't trigger it in Edit mode, cuz the dissolve will go away).

This directional mag switch will be attached to piston with a block of glass (again, whatever... glass just slides the best) within a "shaft" of DM. The block of glass on the piston will have a mag key and will pass by three mag switches attached to your magic mouths.

Now you have the option of either using the same piston with a large gap between the mm switches and the next bit, or you can have the end of this piston trigger another directional/switch/piston to act as your timer before it triggers the final switch to drop the piston/sponge configuration (again, set to directional).

EDIT: Ah, the ubiquitous BurnVictim beats me to the punch!
