Character Design Contest (ROUND 2 WINNERS ARE DETERMINED!)

Round 2

Round 2 has begun! Please read through all of the rules before entering!

Directions
1. Following the theme, create a character in create mode.
2. Put it in a blank level.
3. Publish that level.
4. PM me the level info and/or post it in this thread.
5. If you are a winner, make your level copyable for two days.
Rules
1. The character must be created during the contest period.
2. No magic mouths should be on the character.
3. No bombs should be implanted in the character.
4. The character must have a name. The level title should have the character's name in it.
5. Bolts of any kind are fine. All connectors are allowed.
6. Sensor/mag-key switches are allowed.
7. Only TWO entries per person during a round.
8. If you are switching out an entry, please specify which one you are switching out.

Judging
1. Each judge will give each entry a rating based on CREATIVITY.
2. Ratings from each judge will be averaged.
3. The highest rated characters win. There will be three winners for each round.

Rules changed, in blue.

Rules

Judging
1. I will decide some finalists. (depending on the amount of contestants)

3. A poll will be put up, poll results will be considered along with judge ratings.

5. The highest rated characters win. There will be three winners for each round.

As for themes, I can't guarantee anything too interesting, the final round (out of 3) may be the most fun.

Actually, I didn't even check the sizes, so I might change it. I'll see...

ok - got one finished. I had to do a dragon and I hope that's ok with Gravel.

We have very different styles so I think it's ok.

Level name: Tweak - the Scaredy Dragon
Location: Antartica

Let me introduce you to TWEAK - the Scaredy Dragon. He's afraid of pretty much everything but especially sackboys & girls. Such a delicate little guy - all he wants is to be left alone. Check him out.

btw - I couldn't resist putting him in context in a cave (you can climb up on top of him to get a better view... and it's funny as heck to watch him watch you. I also included an unlit unobstructed version of him is on top of the cave for closer scrutiny. Oh yea - his tail flicks and his heart races as you get nearer to him, and he shakes as he tries to hide behind his tiny arms... poor thing. Hope you like him - I've come to love the little guy.

Everyone's looks awesome so far!

I have to have it copyable, so I can change anything if something goes wrong, or if something is needed. Adding friends and getting keys is just too much trouble for me

(you never know if somebody, even me, will forget...)

On a side note, the deadline has been extended to July 25th. Just in case.

Hey Nice dragon! I really like the arms and legs--nicely sculpted... as far as choosing a dragon (puhleeze).... like I'd care, styles or otherwise, Tuckerd for me was just a nights work and I had fun, Dragons are popular! Now the real question is... If I make a Ghostbusters Level will you mind if I make Gargoyles?

Couldn't you just arrange with each creator whose entry you want to copy a time window to make it copyable so you can get it right away and they can then lock it so it's not there for everyone to get hold of ?
Again, you never know when somebody will forget, including me.

But you do have a point...maybe next round.

Ok I thought I may aswell have a go although looking at all your entries peeps mine looks rather feeble.

Anyway mine is called 'Ellie the Elephant'. Yeah I know it's not a very original name but I wanted 2 female names that rhymed for obvious reasons when you look at the photo below ( that's her baby 'Nellie' with her ).

I had made what I called the "Possessed Pandiger Bear", but upon shrinking it to "Shopkeeper" size, all of the small parts (teeth, nails) disappeared. These entries are amazing though so far.

Ok, looked at both Gravel's and Morgana's... uber-detail! I mean, even if it's just a character, you still give lots of atmosphere to these, er... dragons. And I've got to say, when you compare the two, they're like opposites. Boy, I'll have to step up my game to get as good as these.

I choose finalists based on what I need for the level project. And I rate based on what's cool.

All of these entries look fantastic so far.

mistervista, is the elephant animated? It's hard to tell from a screenshot, but it looks like an action shot of you riding the elephant. It itself doesn't actually look like it has parts to move, but I can imagine the ears and trunk animating and such. Great job on it either way though.

Just the trunk moves on both , and the big one ( Ellie ) squirts water ( bubbles ) out at you.

I couldn't really make the ears flap correctly as it's not possible to make movement between layers. I could have made some that go up and down but thought it wasn't worth the effort as they wouldn't look right doing that anyway.

I know I did that with my vulture in Sheriff Sack but that's because with it being a bird I wanted to give at least some sort of wing movement to make it look a bit more realistic. It would be great if MM gave us the ability to make movement through the layers but I don't think that will ever happen.
It sounds like you would have benefited from the Theck/Thack glitch, which basically give you two extra types of layers. You can make flat objects rotate on top of flat objects among other things, and it would be easier to get everything you want into it. Regardless though, great work.

Thats where the name came from

I drew a cheshire cat first, but decided to give him a different look (plus i didn't even want to THINK of the pain in getting him to dissolve one piece at a time ;p) So cheshire... chester...

I wasn't really "Tom and Jerry" inspired, i just thought it was amusing i ended up making a cat and a rat for my two entries

So you just make a character-related person?

You make an animal out of the materials in create mode. Like the characters in the Story mode of the game. Like the alligators or the Merkats or Giraffes. Basically think of it as an object you make that looks like an animal.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for the offer Gravel, I know where to go for quality props when I make The Frog Prince. Please don't hold your breath, it could be quite some time before that happens, and if Fleegle is the standard of creation I produce in that Fairy Tale I may well shoot myself!!

Meet Billy the Bad News Bunny.. (minor update to the animation - made the gun and arm move a bit)

Billy hasn't been none too happy since his cousin got the top bunny spot as the Energizer Bunny. So armed with his 44 magnum Salad Shooter, Billy has been practicing to perhaps pay his cousin a little visit.

You have to go in and check him out as I found it pretty darn hysterical making him.. Just be careful! I have it rigged to fire real live carrot rounds so don't spook him or he might just aim for you!

Icemaiden I checked yours out earlier and it was brilliant. He's so cute and your scenery in the level is awesome once again ( loved the lilies and the bullrushes ). I've just PM'd Rhy and left a message with him for you so I won't repeat it here.

And jww I'll check yours out as soon as I get back on the PS3 later today. He looks awesome too.

What started out as a little contest is turning up some real gems of characters and is great fun. Well done crazymario for kicking it off. I can't wait to see how/if you use some of them in your level/s.

Those two rabbits sum up LBP pretty well... they are 'equally' great and at opposite poles of craftEarth... amazing!

Oh darn , I already have another frog that I made a few weeks ago. Well 2 different ones actually but I've already had my 2 allowed entries so I can't do any more.
I'd be happy to let anyone see them though or just put them in one of the levels as support characters and if AwesomePossum's museum idea is taken up I'd be more than happy to donate them to that aswell.

This contest is seriously hotting up now. I wouldn't like to be a judge that's for sure because it's gonna be tough.

I don't know how but it would be great if we could combine all these into some sort of animated cartoon level. Online create would be real handy for that. It would be awesome and if it could happen I would like to be the first to nominate Icemaiden to do the scenery for it. No pressure Icey !!

I published my entry hours ago but fore some reason I felt sick all of a sudden and took a nap!!

After a series of failed attempts to get those chickens, Leroy just purchased the Acme Lure-a-chicken. It works!! That dastardly wolf can't contain his joy any longer so he dances. Dances on and on and on,...

Special cameos by an infinite amount of hypnotised chickens!!

This was just what I needed in LBP, something else, and I very much enjoyed making it!!

ps: Pop your sackboy to get to the scoreboard, I will add a dress me up leroy in there later on.

A spider is perfectly fine for the contest. However, it most likely won't make it to finalists. You may want to choose something else unless it's gonna be really awesome.

And if i'm not mistaking, you can withdraw and replace an entrie for a new one, right cm?
I personally like them all of the current ones, but if you feel you can do a better one and have submitted 2 already you can easly withdraw one and make a beter one instead.

I'll put that rule in later. But it still applies now.

Anyways, I finally got down to writing down everyone's entries.
There are 11 (or supposedly 12, unless kodymcq quit (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?u=3594)) entries.
9 people entered. Meaning that I could probably get 5 finalists. Only 4 people could get their feelings hurt, and only 2 people would lose the round.

So....c'mon people, we need more entries!

LOL!! Thanks! ...but you should have seen it when I first attempted it. It wasn't very impressive at all to see parts breaking, the gun go flying off one way, and some of Billy's parts floating off another way!! Call the medics!! We have a bunny down!!

I made some other updates, moving everything off the floor more like a level. I added a bridge, lake, quite a few trees, clouds, more decorations and of course pop up worms. ...you just need those! I've had a great time playing with this darn bunny!

You know - anyone who has creator's block need only look at this thread for at least three dozen different ideas for story lines on a level... not that they should "steal" these but using different characters with slighly different motivations you could find tons of levels to build in just these few characters.

I think I'm going to start including this exercise in my advice for creators block: Pick an animal - now what makes it tick, what does it like, what does it hate, Is it brave or cowardly or a heck of a smooth dancer - now pick one of those things and make him do it - voila - level!

I'm sorry jww, I do know how horrible it feels to have your work copied. It made me depressed and weepy for days and I only had a small part of my level copied. Some people have no regard for the feelings of others and how they are affected by what they do.

In my mind Billy is yours and always will be, end of.

I feel sorry for this guy because I may have just changed my name to 'ICEY NOT NICEY'.

This has been a fun competition, it even made me laugh! Good luck everyone.

I wouldn't be surprised if all our creations have been copied. We can't really have a go at people for copying them because we have left them for anyone and everyone to copy in the first place although they shouldn't just copy and blatantly republish exactly as is.

I was worried about that all along. I just hope nobody has them all and steals our museum idea.

I really think we need to do something different next time crazymario. I'm not happy about leaving them copyable all the time because there are always going to be people out there who steal them and do what they've done to jww ( sorry to hear about that by the way ).

Maybe we need to have them locked and copyable in future like GrantosUK has just done with his 1 layer race gate level. I know that means taking up another slot on your published levels with a safe for the key if you've got one spare ( I'm not sure I have right now ) but it's better than having everything stolen.

Or could we just add you and send them. I'm not sure if you can edit them then though.
Whatever , we need to find a solution for next time.

By the way if you've already copied them could you tell us and then we can make them not copyable again. After all once you have them they don't need to be copyable any more.

Apart from that issue I have to agree with everyone else and say this has been one of the most fun contests ever. Ive had a great time doing mine and also seeing the great creations everyone else has come up with.

Bring on part 2 ( but with better security ).

Thanks everyone.. I'm really not upset at all.. and today I actually find it a bit funny. Thankfully it wasn't really a level and did it just for fun and as well as the experience.

...but Zwollie.. a whole clone army of Billy's? Yikes.. that is kinda creepy!

I might send the guy a pm and again tell him he should delete the level, but also tell him I would be more than happy to explain any of the bits that he doesn't understand to help him make animated creatures of his own. I can't fault him for copying, I simply question him publishing as is. Possibly he ran out of space on his moon and wanted to keep it to study it a bit. If so... then simply lock it!

Appreciate that we will be a bit more secure next round. ...still it has been a great time and look forward to whatever next round brings!!

NOT TO MENTION (No offense Zwol--it a definite winner, you know that!) First place went to a character that was about 20x the size of the shopkeeper... so what the heck are you doing further torturing these needless rules for such a fun loving contest?

Why not make a key room and anyone who wants to enter can leave their key in it and gain access to the others.... or create a level for us. Each person would copy and then add their entry. We could draw for order? ...go alphabetically until the round time limit expires or the level thermometer goes red.

As I said before, publish it TWICE!! It makes everything so much easier!!

Once as a public version and once as a locked copyable version and then we just send the keys to crazymario.
After he has copied it, we can simply delete that extra version.

You all are confusing me too... Did you not read this post or something?

Publish the level just like any ol' other level (uncopyable, in case you didn't understand)
If you are a winner, go into LBP and make it copyable for a small period of time. It's not THAT hard to do.
I understand that people will see it on the cool pages. But seriously, it's only like 5 people. The chances are low.

If you don't like my logic behind this, then do what you want. I'm not stopping you. However, this seems to be the easiest and least consuming of space on your PSN. And MY profile.

I'm surprised that virtually nobody followed the shopkeeper rule. I'm probably just going to remove the rule, since I can easily resize the character myself. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Funny thing is I didn't even notice the shopkeeper size thing on the entries. Mine is sized within the size limit but after setting up the initial size I never even thought about it again. lol.

I think I understand crazymario's reasoning on the whole copy thing. Rather than getting him on all of our friends list (which you'd need to send him the key) or making separate key levels (which he'd have to run around and collect then go play the levels) Making the levels when published PLAYABLE by everyone and UNCOPYABLE. Until the winners are announced, then you only have to republish and change the settings to PLAYABLE and COPYABLE for a day or two. This should minimize incidents like last round where non-creative theives hijacked two of the character designs and published them as their own.....grrrrrrr!

imo - I like your solution CrazyMario.

I do like this way. I think that is the easiest for him as well as protecting us. Though 2 days seems like quite a long time to copy a level down, but I seriously don't care as I am just having fun and trying to improve my character abilities.. I think I did pretty good for my 2nd one ever!!

Good news on Billy.. He has been deleted and I have a new PSN friend and fan as the one that had him published requested me to add him.

Just a small suggestion that would make this thread a bit better (or I think so anyway). Could all the entries perhaps be copied into the first post? Its just very time consuming when someone like me wants to view the entries and has to browse throgh every single page.
Same here, I'll try to do that for this round.

Anyways, that's a really cool robot you've made there, Cog! Like Zwollie said, it is a great way to start off round number 2 out of somewhat infinity! ;D

I just finished my entry apart from some scenery additions but I published it in the meantime anyway.

It's called 'Rusty the Reluctant Roving Postbot'.

Set in a future sterile world where you no longer have to take your post to the postbox because the 'Postbots' come to you. Rusty yearns for the 'Good Old Days' and rebels against the system that made him a Postbot when all he wanted from life was to be a second-hand car sales bot. Visit him in his not so utopian world and see him throwing a paddy ( beware though as that's not all he's throwing ).
