You know it's going to happen, you should try messaging the person that you think is copying and ask them if they can put inspired by you or something like that in the description. There isn't much to discuss here, shouldn't this be a blog post? I don't know, its just what I think.2009-06-30 17:03:00

Yeah it's not cool that people do copy your style but take it also as a positive. Your style is so awesome that it is copied.

Go easy on them. Some people may not even know you =/
The way I look at it, people can make their level look any way they want to.
I'm sure there were many people before you that used that style.
If it still bothers you, you can always message them, like brnxblze said.

Jump Button's case is blatant and not like the usual stuff you see in the community. There's been a guy copying his artstyle for Robot Town and he also called his level Robot Town...
Also, his art style ARE easily distinguishable and special. His case is not the usual "coincidental resemblance" or again an artstyle that some other people will do hazardously.

While it's true that there are no original ideas or styles, if you can prove without a doubt that your style is being copied... then you should be addressing the individual who is doing it directly. I've seen several creators and levels who's style is similar to mine. Like I said though, if you have the proof...2009-06-30 19:10:00

You know? funny thing is many people who copied others say that sort of stuff to make it seem they're the original, not saying that's the case always, but still better be careful, you might be giving the credit to the thief and accusing the original creator of being the thief...2009-06-30 19:57:00

Well, first of all, you should just give the creator who copied off you a message about it. I'm sorry to hear about this, but it seems that there'll always be the people who just copy off other's ideas in a creative community.2009-06-30 20:19:00

Good point. Hope that's not the case here. Just another reason we need a Pulbished Date when your level goes up.

You can't do anything about people copying your "art style".
Everyone has influences that affect their work, and it is quite possible they haven't even seen your levels.

However if they are directly copying the shape of an element (like that ice queen example), you have the right to complain.

Also, "alot" is actually two words contrary to popular belief.

There's a difference you guys don't make.

The more unique and usual is an artstyle, the rarer it will be copied and and harder it will be to copy anyways. The more you copy a distinct artstyle, the more damageable and the less it's ok to do it.

Jump_Button style is distinguishable and unique. He can totally make this thread. It's not just a artstyle you make out of the blue. Proof of that anyways is that there's only Jump_Button and the like 2 guys that copied his level artstyle that exist in the LBP world.

If he was "copied" by hundreds of people (like most artstyles) this whole thing wouldn't be an issue and this thread wouldn't be justified.

A style... for someone so methodical, meticulous and visually adept, really is something identifiable and to be proud of, so I know where you're coming from. It's also not something that can be clear cut proven and timestamped like people are asking in here... it's just something you know, recognize, and feel in your gut when you see it.

On the subject though, working with people like you and jackofcourse on projects has definitely affected my style... I feel that trying to cohesively bond with the style of another creator has given me a huge influx of style to amalgamate into my own, and it's a positive thing, but it's sometimes hard to tell if you're improving your own work on it's natural course or being subconsciously influenced by the things you admire.

I remember there was a quote from one of my favorite musicians, concerning another one of my favorites - he said that he loves their work, and loves working with them, but feels that they're so incredibly good he tries hard not to listen to them too much for fear of being too heavily influenced by their style and technique as a peer.

It sucks to be copied, I've had it happen.

How popular are the copy levels? If not at all, then consider yourself lucky. People who have copied my level have gotten tons of plays and on Cool Levels, and I've had to deal with some people calling ME the thief.

Well you shouldn't be too hard on whoever you think copied your style, it's entirely possible that they've never seen your drawings or levels before

I'd seen similar art styles to Skytown, Robot Town AND the black and white level loads of times before.
I remember when i first saw Skytown the first thing i asked is if you'd gotten inspiration for it from Untitled Story, which has an area with a very similar style called Skytown!

You may not realise it but everyone including yourself will draw ideas from things that you've seen sometimes without even knowing that you've seen something similar to it before.

It's not a bad thing though because it's part of the process of learning to draw and getting better at it

dude you know youre a good designer. i love your drawings and your levels including the reason i added you which is skytown. but here is my opinion.

if he copied your stuff like literally making it exact detail of yours then i agree it's wrong. but there shouldn't be anything wrong with me loving your style and then using your style to create other levels by sampling elements of your style in my own design. this should be flattering for you because people like your levels and your style that they wish to imitate it and create their own.

so long post short. if they copied your stuff to the letter then yeah you should confront them. if they just "sampled" your idea and are creating something different with your style then maybe you should help them and lead them to create a style of their own based on some of your elements. sound good?

oh wow, how is someone even successfully copying you in the first place? your style is easily recognized, but pretty much impossible to recreate!

however, i will agree with dexiro a bit. it is possible that someone remembered seeing your level, and kept the thought in the back of their head without knowing. and then when they create a level, the use your style without noticing.

i think if you were to post a few pics of the area of your level that they copied, next to their version of it, we could get a better idea of what's going on. we dont know if its mildly using your style, or COMPLETELY ripping you off.

im very sad to hear this, and i hope you clear this up soon! i also cant wait till your next sky town level :]

i would advise you to play zephyr valley before publishing sky town (based on your illustrations) if you are so concerned about imitation.

having now seen the trailer for your level, it is clearly different, but shares a couple features.
also having now discovered that your level came before the other, i hope that it is not the accused here.

Unfortunately (and this is referring more to style than to blatant plaguerism) people being attracted to a "style" and copying it is something that will never go away, and shouldn't.

In advertising, the popular look that attracts people is constantly changing. Apple, for instance, may come up with a style that suddenly everyone is trying to copy. If you look at the way web sites look today versus a few years ago there was a complete paradigm shift. Same with clothing and the paint on buildings.

This is not to say that someone didn't copy another persons level too closely, but it's definately something to think about and have a balanced view on.

Jump Button's Sky Town was before my Zephyr Valley and I actually played Sky Town for the first time while I was building Zephyr Valley and was concerned that some people would think I copied my look from there. In actuality, I was inspired by the new Prince of Persia and steam punk styles, which both are pretty similar to Jump Button's style. Here is a sketch I originally drew while planning Zephyr Valley:

http://www.brentsimmons.com/lbp/zvsketch1.jpg

While not nearly as detailed as Jump's amazing drawings, you can see a few similar design aspects such as the pipes, windmills, etc. However, even though our levels contain similar themes (themes that have been used in other media), I still see a distinct style difference in our levels. So, I think there is a possibility that these other creators simply had a similar idea (much like I did), but I'd have to actually take a look at the levels in question to make a more informed judgement.

When I first saw Robot Town, I was convinced you'd got your inspiration from a flash game called Little Wheel (http://www.kongregate.com/games/fastgames/little-wheel). Although it's now likely you didn't, maybe it could have inspired the other creators? 2009-07-07 17:15:00

When presented with the same tools and materials, some people will come up with similar, or possible identical ideas and styles.

It happens. Doesn`t mean anyone is copying anyone.

And you know... when I first saw Zephyr Valley I thought of the cloud city in the Empire Strikes back...

And there was another movie that had kind of a similar style but I can't quite remember it right now. I think it was a Disney cartoon or something.

I REMEMBER! It was near the end of "The Neverending story" where much of the world has disappeared and only remnants are left floating around.

I know there are other movies that have done this kind of image also, but I can't remember any others. (hopefully a much cooler source lol - would be funny if it turned out the source of all these cool levels was a cheesy kids movie....)

I would imagine, with such a new medium, (we arent doing watercolors here), with such a limited palette, the core artstyle of the community is still being developed. do you think artists do not learn from others? i clearly remember someone showing me once "this is how you draw a tree" Bob Ross did it everyday on tv. in the current lbp environment, we are still learning how to draw trees. when someone figures it out, it only makes sense for others to see it and use the same or similar methods.2009-07-08 15:48:00
