What new background would you ask MM?
Archive: 39 posts
I've searched the forums, and it seems that even if people would like to have new backgrounds, there isn't any kind of "official request thread", other than this one, https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=359 , that was quite old; so I opened this one, and...please forgive me if I didn't check the site enough. I think that backgrounds can add a lot to every level. First of all, I think that a good background should be quite "generic", so nothing that is ripped exactly from other games/comics/movies/books. People in the other thread had good ideas. Hospital/Research Center would be fine for all the portal-like, puzzle levels Medieval Castle/Fantasy location Jungle/Forest The Dock/Lake/Beach, something that appear only on first videos Planet/Alien Ship/Space for the tech levels Underwater cool, but I don't imagine how to use it. MM office, well, this could be real fun, and useful for levels in houses Carnival Theme/Luna Park Different City scape Sky Theme/Clouds Night/Neon City Factory Desertalthough the Mexican landscape is good, the Egyptian bg for the PSP is wonderful Volcano Futuristic/Sky City What would you guys like to have? I'll try to update this post tracking even the votes for every bg. | 2009-06-30 13:36:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
I just want a space background. Completely black with glowing white spots. That's not to say that level is in the dark, because objects will illuminate just fine, using the normal adjustments in the tools bag. I know a lot of levels that could use a space background, even if they aren't space-themed. | 2009-06-30 13:51:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
Well, if you look at every bg, you can notice that every background has 3 or more "zones". An extraplanetary bg for example, could have planet surface in the lower part, an alien ship somewhere, some rock here and there and most than 3/4 of the upper part being just space with stars of different dimensions. Here's the reason why I said generic, because you can use the same background for different uses. | 2009-06-30 14:02:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
MM HQ background: Section 1 the front door, section 2 office cubicles, section 3 Alex Evans hat on his desk. Bam! best background ever | 2009-06-30 14:33:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |
I like what's been suggested so far. the backgrounds at the moment have sack boy as being tiny. would maybe like to see one or two where sack boy has normal proportions. as for other suggestions, maybe a fantasy background with a castle away in the distance. or a cartoon background. | 2009-06-30 16:19:00 Author: Matt 82 Posts: 1096 |
Most definitely a Galactic Theme--this could cut Thermo use way down for those of us who have to resort to filling in the area with leds, planets and such. Another could be a Carnival Theme, with Midway, etc. Would make for a nice platforming backdrop. And a City Scape that is properly proportioned. The one we presently have has windows that are as large as a building we might want to create for Sacky in level, so to me it seems out of place. I think these 3 backgrounds would be really useful: - Sky theme - Clouds - Stars/Planets They'd be good as 'default' backgrounds since they'd go well with almost any level theme Then i think we need a: - Jungle - Desert - Maybe a tomb like theme - Volcano - Maybe something industrial like a factory - a neon city It'd be really nice to see a background of someones bedroom but i'm not sure how useful it'd be | 2009-06-30 18:14:00 Author: Dexiro Posts: 2100 |
I like the idea of space theme quite a bit! Actually, I'd be happy with just an evening sky type of theme as it could be handy for lots of things. | 2009-06-30 18:22:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
I'm with you all on the star BG. I think they should approach it that if you use the GLT it would start as a plain sunny day BG with a few clouds, and as you roll the lighting off the clouds dissipate and it becomes pitch black BG dotted with stars. | 2009-06-30 19:05:00 Author: Rustbukkit Posts: 1737 |

That's a really good idea. It would make it usable for many, many different types of levels, or even for some levels that don't really have a theme, but just want to look good. | 2009-06-30 19:21:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
I just want a space background. Completely black with glowing white spots . I know a lot of levels that could use a space background. TELL ME ABOUT IT!! ; ) I could have saved, oh, about 4000 LEDs. And not one background has clouds in. Not one single solitary cloud. I'm basing Cloud City in the Middle East out of protest. Space. Clouds/Sky Please. | 2009-06-30 19:44:00 Author: julesyjules Posts: 1156 |
I want to see a beach background. Imagine the epic battles you can remake (such as D-Day!) Or making a boardwalk level complete with the rollercoaster and arcade. This would be really cool (or would result in several DoA remakes... ) | 2009-06-30 19:51:00 Author: Outlaw-Jack Posts: 5757 |

Futuristic City, like the ones in Ratchet & Clank or the one in the AD2000 stickers. | 2009-07-01 20:26:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
The space idea is great, I can sympathise with everybody above about having to use LEDS and planet stickers to try and get a decent space background. Even getting the background they use for the tutorial levels would be a nice start (although useless for space themes). | 2009-07-02 11:11:00 Author: GruntosUK Posts: 1754 |
What I would like to see is the ability to use lots of smaller sections of different backgrounds in the same level with the option to resize each one as and when required. The present ones are very restrictive. e.g. they have buildings at the bottom that are way too big and out of proportion with the things we want to put in the level and if you have to place things anywhere other than on the level floor they just don't fit the bg at all. It's very rare that I want the same background to run throughout the entire level ( the exception being my new Wild West level which I think works pretty well ). Even then I couldn't go up another level when I reached the end because it would have looked stupid. As long as everything was on the level floor it was ok. In my Dragster level for instance where I have to keep building upwards to get extra races in, the floor level is ok but higher ones are hopeless and I can't build a custom background in many cases because the back thin layer is occupied by part of the vehicles. It wouldn't be so bad if we could build custom backgrounds and then take a photo of them and then use that photo in the same way as an MM background. | 2009-07-02 11:48:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
I think that sky background would be really sweet. Tweak the time of day to the brightest and theres a rainbow, lowest you have a starry night. Use fog to adjust cloud amount. And if possible, weather adjustments, but that's another thread. | 2009-07-10 05:21:00 Author: navy_flip Posts: 19 |
Medieval (or a bit later) harbour town and a tropical island for some pirate levels. Castle ruins. Meadow (think Flower)/cave combination, so you don't have to build your caves with trees and such in the background. Forest. Just a good, old forest with plenty of oak trees etc. And a few squirrels. | 2009-07-10 09:56:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Caves built in the monster pack background | 2009-07-10 10:55:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
Outer space... with semi-static planets, moons, a sun, and stars... plenty of inherent lighting attributes to it as well. A hot molten, underground maybe? Much like the Monster pack BG, but red, orange, bright and with pools of lava at the bottom. | 2009-07-10 14:01:00 Author: Unknown User |
various sky backgrounds, ocean front, forest with river, mountians, sandy desert, space. and a background switcher tool like the global changer. | 2009-07-10 16:24:00 Author: Deftmute Posts: 730 |
There should be a new tool that lets you change the background at anytime during the level- like the lighting tool. you should be able to change the transitions so you can choose if you want the backgrond to scroll in like when you change it in the popit or have it fade in.You should also be able to set a timer for how long the background takes to fade in. | 2009-07-10 18:00:00 Author: theamilien Posts: 485 |
► Background from the tutorial levels ► And some simple backgrounds... almost abstract like. (yea i like simple stuff) | 2009-07-10 21:27:00 Author: Yarbone Posts: 3036 |
Mine is rather specific...since sony owns Michael Jackson's music, I hope LBP can snag a few songs for the game, and use the backdrops of the music videos as backgrounds (ex: thriller has the theater, street, home, smooth criminal has the inside and outside of a building, etc) | 2009-07-10 21:54:00 Author: Theap Pleman Posts: 670 |

Much like the Monster pack BG, but red, orange, bright and with pools of lava at the bottom. Semi-static eh? Good idea! I'd love to see some BG's with slight movement in them.... space would be a great place to start with this concept. | 2009-07-10 22:40:00 Author: Rustbukkit Posts: 1737 |
Space/Cloudy Sky would be my pick. | 2009-07-11 06:23:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
I'd like a futuristic city background like Coruscant from Star Wars or Star Trek's San Francisco. | 2009-07-11 15:19:00 Author: Reef1978 Posts: 527 |
A bedroom or living room background, so it feels like some of the old concepts. | 2009-07-11 17:17:00 Author: Sackdragon Posts: 427 |
The space one would deffinately be cool, and i like the lava idea one too. personally i would like to see a medival countryside, with forests and rivers except it just stretches out into the distance instead of stopping. Maybe they could make some sort of background editor where you make a level and then hit a button where it sorof "flattens" the image (like in photoshop) which can then be used as a background | 2009-07-11 17:26:00 Author: redmagus Posts: 667 |
Cemetary/scary background - Would have old buildings falling apart for those futuristic end of the world type levels. Graveyards and spider webs for those scary levels, and maybe a few dark backgrounds with tree's and glowing lurking eyes in the shadows. Park - Have a section with playground equipment, another with just tree's and paths to follow and a third with small roller-coasters or marry-go-rounds. City life day - Have one with some nice looking buildings like San Francisco, another section with some old type buildings like you see in Paris, and a third that has speckled homes here and there like you are driving through the country. City life night - Nice looking buildings like San Francisco with all the lights working, with a section where there is a beach and a pier and a third section where you have a lot of neon lights and signs like Las Vegas. What I would really like to see Environmental landscapes with moving items in background. Example - Desert landscape - Just desert, with a few cactuses and blistering sun, but the sun slowly moves across the background and every once in awhile a dust storm moves in the background. I wouldn't hold my breath to long for a moving background though. That would probably cause a lot of lag online with multiplayer for the game to generate those options as well as all the stuff people throw in their own levels. | 2009-07-11 19:38:00 Author: nartules Posts: 38 |
Sorry for double post but I thought of one other thing. If we could import pictures from our playstation eye and patch together a background on our own, that would be awesome! | 2009-07-11 19:39:00 Author: nartules Posts: 38 |
I would like a space background, futuristic background, forest background and that background in the tutorial levels. Not much else apart from that. | 2009-07-11 20:09:00 Author: lk9988 Posts: 1077 |
That would be cool if there was a volcanic background, with lava oozing and rocks flying. Or what about... -Fields -Mountains -Paperworld -Tropical forest (Colorful plants, rivers, lots of shrubs.) -Indutrial -Wasteland (Dead trees, dark scorched ground) -Backgrounds from the concept art -Tye dye background (Lots of colors, moving around) -River -Badlands (Like the ones in South Dakota) -Aquarium -Library -Mars (Like a space background) -Moving background (Like being on top of a train going through a tunnel.) -Bridge (Water and city in background) -Highway (Moving cars in background) -Large forest (Forest with creeks, pine and deciduous trees, walk through areas like a hollow log.) -Arcade (For futuristic levels and game levels.) -Restaurant (For food levels.) -Inside a clock tower That would be cool if MM made packs just full of backgrounds. | 2009-07-11 23:59:00 Author: warlord_evil Posts: 4193 |
I want that BG from the creator pack. I love it. | 2009-07-12 00:37:00 Author: Project_MK Posts: 80 |
I had also been thinking that a space background would be brilliant. Stars and planets, maybe even a satellite or UFO at one part, or an asteroid field. And I agree with a sky background. Maybe the lower parts could be mountain peaks and then you have beautiful clouds, a plane at one part. I could go on but, in general, Cloudy Sky and Outer Space would be my favourite ideas. | 2009-07-13 00:02:00 Author: persona3fan93 Posts: 155 |
There's been alot of really nice ideas such as the beach and space one. Here's some I've thought about: Italian wine farmlands: The background would have a dirt road in the foreground and the background would be this hedge, once you get high up enough you see the beautiful landscape in all it's green glory with maybe one or two white houses in the distance. 60s style computer room: Tape decks, slowly pulsing lights here and there, tiled floor, clean and retro style. Colour scheme would be mostly gray/white with a few splashes of colour here and there. North american lakeside: It'd start on a jetty or something with boats anchored to it, slowly moving with the water with reed moving along with the wind, with some poking out inbetween the jettys planks, going right results you going into a dark green/brown forest no pearly white sand beach or anything nah, just the usual reed debris mixing with the mud, out onto a small path, and then into more forest. I would however imagine the space background to be the most popular and well recieved one, so personally if I was in a situation where I had to choose just one, it would be space. | 2009-07-13 20:47:00 Author: ll_ye Posts: 236 |
I love the idea of a space one with multiple zones like a planet surface an atmospheric transition and then stars and nebulae and planets. If I could only get one this would be it. I wouldn't mind seeing some kind of patterned backgrounds either. Like fabric florals or other abstract/graphic stuff that you could alter the color of. Would be nice for puzzle levels where you don't need a scenic background but just something interesting to look at in parts. A skyline of a city/futuristic city would be awesome too. All high tech for space stuff or industrial levels. Guess we'll have to wait and see if any more level packs are forthcoming. | 2009-07-14 00:16:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
I want the background used in all the tutorials, the one that has moons or something in the background. I love that one so much and was quite sad when I didn't win it after the last tutorial. | 2009-07-15 21:16:00 Author: dandygandy2704 Posts: 1002 |
Here are some of my ideas: -Mushroom Land -A wooden background(would be good for attic, rooms, shelves, clock tower and a whole bunch of stuff made of wood) - Flip horizontally the backgrounds - | 2009-07-22 03:45:00 Author: Chump Posts: 1712 |
