Lone Ninja Episode 4: Assault on Sakunaga Castle - spotlighted!
Archive: 26 posts
Lone Ninja Episode 4 is the fourth in its series, and focuses on unique action sequences that simulate "ninja action". I would self-describe as an untalented hardcore gamer: I wish I could finish every ELITE CHALLENGING NINJA TRAINING level I encounter, but I can't...or rather, I generally abandon too-difficult challenges after about 10 attempts and go play a different game (or have a beer ) instead. My Ninja series follows a different motif: figure out how, and you can rock every bad guy's face in a unique manner. Every enemy in the level must be defeated by approaching from angles, rear attack, creative use of tools, etc. No simple head-stomps allowed! (There is one easy head-stomp in the level, but it's not simple.) This is also the series' first true multi-stage boss. I'm very happy with Tengu, the multi-stage Demon Chicken from Episode 3, but let's face it. Shoot the bird a lot and he dies. Hopefully, this new one will be more fun for everyone. BIG EDIT, OCTOBER 2010: Level has been retooled until it is barely recognizable. Pics to follow. 24851 24852 24853 24854 24855 24856 http://lbp.me/v/ps6dz7 | 2009-06-28 14:33:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
NINJA SUPLEX! Just played your level and I got to hand it to you that was pretty **** cool. You took two awesome things ninjas and luchadoras and did something memorable. The set-up was nice and your opening was well done, I've yet to see someone use the global switch like that before that was a great idea. There are a couple of problems that should be easy to fix. The first is your elevator. If you miss the grapple hook there is no way to get back up and if there is I couldn't find the indication to do so. If you make a toggle switch that problem should be fixed. Next was the boss. It was surprisingly easy. I know you said the level wasn't supposed to be hard core or anything but the obstacles could be polished. Another thing was that the boss was easily skipable, after you use the paintinator to get the the second sequence all you had to do was hang on to the grappling hook to get on the third layer and beat it in record time. All in all a great level, I would have given you 3 stars but that finishing move you get to do on the boss was just so awesome it gave you 4, but in all seriousness I was a little too generous on that much. Add a few more stealth kills to be done (especially with wrestling moves) give the boss a little more challenge and then the bullet train to hell will be rightfully earned. I'll be waiting for your next level when I get to clothesline and pile drive some demons. Don't dissapoint on that part you got a good concept going | 2009-06-29 01:15:00 Author: Waldo Posts: 108 |
If you've got fixes for the boss, I'd love to hear it. | 2009-06-29 02:46:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
I just played this a bit ago (I saw your comment on my level and drilled down) and I thought this was pretty stinkin' cool! Every time I saw one of the "ninja" moves I had a big laugh. Very creative. I think everyone should check this out. I've played other Ninja-themed levels but I'd never seen all the little ninja moves recreated in this way. I especially like the end boss. This was definately a bit on the easy side, but I understand why. It may have been difficult to have these scripted moves AND have a higher difficulty. But the end boss could have used a BIT more difficulty. I finished him off pretty easily. 5 stars and a heart - great job! | 2009-06-29 03:45:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
If you've got fixes for the boss, I'd love to hear it. easiest one would be to add a layer of gas to the third layer, I didn't even have to fight the thing. I'd have to fight the boss again because when i did wasn't that memorable. The finishing move was longer than the boss fight | 2009-06-29 04:31:00 Author: Waldo Posts: 108 |
All right guys, edits so far: This isn't my first lift, WaIdo, but I understand what you're saying about it being possible to grapple out of the second floor and get stranded. I've decided to just kill any player trying to do so until I have time to throw in some OR switches for the lift. Added a layer of gas to the right-hand edge, and moved the grapple switch to the foreground layer. Grabbing it will no longer put you in the background...and if you somehow fall there anyway, you'll die. I cannot solve the conundrum about the boss finisher being longer than the boss fight right away. Further, I've had three players contact me being unable to finish. I will probably do it by forcing the player to reload paint two or three times, with a possibly more dangerous plasma gauntlet; figure out some way to put a multi-stage effect on the grapple; then leave the final cut and powerbomb as is. In the end, my levels are gonna be easy-to-middlin' difficulty because that's where I'm at. But I'll concede the overall point, which is that Sakunaga deserves to be able to put up a...slightly...better fight. Edited to add: Drilled down? CCubbage, are you military? Edited again to PS: Boss difficulty is now increased. OR switches on lift still not present. | 2009-06-29 04:42:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
Nope, not military. I'm a programmer, and we "drill down" on things (clicking on a list to go to the details) | 2009-06-29 19:19:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
This is also how the military speaks of determining ultimate causes/choosing what to destroy. | 2009-06-30 01:42:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
Very nice level, the best one in the series. The boss battle is EPIC as was the ninja suplex . One thing though, the level broke on me the first time I played at the boss battle. I think it was because at the part he says grab his heart I grabbed his back since it was grabable I thought it would be the same. You might want to look into that. Or not since it was my fault for not grabbing his heart (lol). I can't wait for part 5! | 2009-07-01 01:29:00 Author: brnxblze Posts: 1318 |
I have dueling problems with the final attack. He needs to go up really high for the move to be funny/awesome...but if anyone chooses to TAP R1, as opposed to grabbing, they're going for a different sort of ride. Mistervista also had this problem. The sword attack that cuts Sakunaga's hand off at the wrist is also problematic. It works perfectly when used as intended - i.e., as a counterattack, when his sword is fully extended. But some people (*ahem*mistervista*cough*) will choose to just grab the thing straight away and wait for Sakunaga to come to them. This also works to set up the move, but sometimes the player gets booted to the right of the boss. Which makes you jump on his back for the finisher. As I said in the run-up, this is the first multi-stage boss I've ever made, and I'll be first to admit it's pretty danged clunky. I don't have enough logic-ese to know what an XOR is, or to read snowflakecat's input/output diagrams, so Sakunaga is run almost completely on interrupts, relays, and p-switches. Anything to make him more elegant is greatly appreciated. | 2009-07-01 01:40:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |

I think that's where I went wrong the first time (lol). It was still an extremely awesome boss especially for a first boss! I love how high you go with him and also the move names "stairway to heaven" and (I think) "bullet train to hell" lol. Too cool. | 2009-07-01 07:09:00 Author: brnxblze Posts: 1318 |
I remember playing the first one in your lone ninja series, and I don't remember liking it much; I rated it 3 stars, basically because of the originallity and the potential it had. So I wasn't very sure about playing the 4th one, but it wasn't like it had nothing better to do, and brnxblze had suggested it on twitter, so... Well, I rated it 5 stars, and I wish I could have used 6! I did love the start, with all the "kill that fisherman stealthy" thing, and It just keep getting better and better! I did also love the grappling hook part, when you shot it at the guards face. Nice thing that you always come with new ways of killing the enemy; it's pure eye candy. I found the scenery pretty japanese based, well done and designed. And I think that I talk in name of everyone if I say that we all loved the way the boss was defeated. Stairway to heaven, lol. I still prefer the Led Zepelin song, but your move came kinda close on beating the song in awesomness. +Good level design +Bestest ways of killing the enemies +Really good pacing -At the very starting, at the dock, the hole it's lie too little and I failed to notice, so I did jum several times on the gas. Oh, and I also felt dumb several times xD -That **** knife! There was at the middle of the level, a table with sushi and stuff, where there was a tiny knife that killed me many times. -Paintinator. I know you've used it before in your lone ninja series, but I just can't see it fitting with the "ninja" thing, altough you mange to make it throw shurikens ^.^ I'd really love some more jumping around. I've said it already, but, this is a 5 star! And I'll sure heart if you just remove that MALDITO knife! EDIT: When it is published, would you mind giving feedback on "Lafarge's Request"? I shall PM you when the time comes. | 2009-07-01 14:04:00 Author: Keldur Posts: 628 |
For you, I shall either remove the knife in the kitchen, or coat it in glass. It's never killed me...I just left stick into the background. The Paintinator is occasionally a necessary evil. If I could make a portable grapple launcher, I'd never use the thing. I also ended up using the jetpack in Episode 2...largely because that altar you rise up from has a zillion switches on it, and would make a problematic lift. The Stairway to Heaven and Bullet Train to Heck are two rides Plucky Duck finds in Happy Fun World, during the Tiny Toons movie "How I Spent My Summer Vacation". | 2009-07-01 14:34:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
I like this level a lot, it's very imaginative. The style of it is also quite good looking, not the best but definitely not the worst and I like levels with an opening like that. The only this I would say for real improvement is a think it would be better if the level was paced faster...sort of like a stelthy kill rampage but it is LBP so maybe the only real way to encourage this would be a race which really wouldn't fit with the level. Short review but the level is a good one. The only part i was slightly confused over was bringing the goblet to the door...I didn't realize what the goblet looked like! 5 stars and heart i think F4F if you get time: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13148 thank you | 2009-07-01 14:53:00 Author: adlingtont Posts: 321 |
I'm really loving this series. Best ninja attack moves on LBP. Hands down. I love that you script interesting ways to dispatch enemies and some of the names for your moves are really cool. I can't imagine a level with more, for lack of a better term, life going on in it. It feels like a real place in terms of the story and when I'm playing it I'm immersed in the story. I haven't had any of the technical problems that other players have reported - maybe I'm just lucky. The only thing I'd like more is if it were longer but I'm sure thermo has you limited. I rated this one 5 stars and since I hearted the rest of your levels I just had to heart you as a creator. Well done - thank you for sharing them! | 2009-07-01 17:30:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
And thank you for playing, Morgana. I'd be first to concede that there are several miles between me and "polished"...but I'm also not really going for that. I'm never gonna be rtm223 or snowflakecat until someone teaches me codespeak. I approach this from a more director-ish standpoint: decide what I want the player to be able to do; find someone who knows how to solve the problems involved, then rip them off (politely and with credit); organize the toys; then see what happens. adlingtont: Absolutely; I'll come through tonight if possible. I owe Morgana more words, too. As for Ninja Rampage: 5 will be a battlefield level; 6 will be a castle infiltration with no boss; 7 (the end) will be nothing but bosses. You may yet get your Ninja Rampage. | 2009-07-02 02:05:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
This is a brilliant level as are the rest of them in the series. It was vey cleverly constructed and the stage was excellent. The fight scene choreography was ingenious as were the fight moves. I thoroughly enjoyed playing. Brilliant work coyote blue. Icey | 2009-07-09 20:06:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |
Bumpy! I don't want to rejoin the running - this level's already been spotlighted - but this level has been COMPLETELY REBUILT. Real water. Better architecture. Different power moves. More stealth zones. Different traps. Secrets counter. And a completely different boss! The Bullet Train to Heck now runs through a building. Let me know what you think. Ninja it up, my friends. | 2010-10-04 04:14:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
I just played your level and it was pretty fun and in the beginning it took me a minute to figure out how to get through the door until I ran behind the bush and press R1 on accident so maybe its just me.... but heres my feedback: Positives: +Attacks on the enemies were awesome liked that alot +Visuals looked really good +Gameplay ran pretty smooth no lag or anything +Platforming was pretty good/ original +Humor for the little area when the things fall on your head in that little room if you pass the well +Boss Fight was really good like that alot also Overall I have no Negatives and I thought the level was pretty good::star::star::star::star: F4F my level SSBB- Battleship Harlberd Interior | 2010-10-04 20:11:00 Author: Sabre_ Posts: 653 |

REAL WATERZ??!!! COOL. Hey CB, just played your rebuild and I did like the addition of water to it. Pretty good. Just one thing though. Perhaps you ought to slow down the initial boat ride so I could better admire those awesomely clean fonts of yours. I'm totally jealous of those, by the way. Oh, and I did find one of the secrets. Is that good? | 2010-10-07 03:26:00 Author: thanatos989 Posts: 248 |
The rowing mechanism might be tweaked. I gotta look at it. It's designed to take a player who holds on about 30 seconds to row through the credits. Not my fault you just threw it in gear and let go. lite_sleeper is the Father of Fonts. The object I use is called Sack of Rome. | 2010-10-08 02:37:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
I?m ashamed to say I have no real memories of playing this first time round, although I know I did (!), so playing it again I was pretty much playing it fresh. I have to say it was a lot of fun. There were some great fighting moves, a cool boss fight and some positively sadistic traps, lol! The stealth gameplay was great and the train ride to heck was exhilarating and ingenious. I also love secrets in a level and I?m proud to say I got all of them on my first play through, yay! *wears smug expression* The visuals were clean and as impressive as ever. I love your interiors and the blossom trees, in particular. Lol at the lady in the bath btw! BD, by any chance? It felt a tad on the short side but I suspect your thermo was full. I can?t wait for the revamp of Lone Ninja 5! <3 | 2010-10-08 20:05:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |
No, it's not BabyDoll. I put on a geisha wig and stuck the cream handkerchief to the geisha's hand. Which I THEN took a picture of. If I'd used the decoration outright, some fourteen-year-old perv would have taken it off with popit and uploaded it to my level teasers. You're right about thermo. If I had used stickers for the towels in the bath house instead of materials, I probably could have wedged another room into the castle. But the new level is still the same number of scenes, and the castle looks more like a castle, and less like a box. | 2010-10-08 20:26:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
Ah, but using materials was so worth it! That was one of the most eye-catching visual touches in the level IMHO. Lol at your precautions with the bath towel! I wouldn't have thought about that, but you're absolutely right! | 2010-10-08 20:53:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |
Heh... thinking about that brings back wonderful memories of Splat Invaders III... and what the players did with the Washington Monument.... smart move! | 2010-10-09 14:52:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
