Point Staircase

Archive: 11 posts

Hello, there, everyone. I just published a nifty little level showcasing an idea I had yesterday. It won't take you very long, but I thought it was an interesting idea. What exactly is the premise? Pure point locomotion! Your goal in the level is to climb a large staircase (would've been much larger, but brains do serious damage to the thermo) using only brains to propel you. The boxes they have been connected to are electrified, just to make sure you don't cheat. Anyways, it's just a short showcase level, but nifty nontheless.
Also, please ignore the more levels link. >_<

That was actually kind of fun.

I never knew that continually jumping on creature brains resulted in a combo, but it's good to know. A couple suggestions:

Spice it up, you don't want it to get tedious.
Try adding moving brains on platforms too.
It doesn't have to be staircases, use this idea to jump up and around hazards and such.
You could make a survival level where there are 5 or so brains lined up and you have to bounce back and forth between them, and dodge hazards at the same time. The brains would obviously continuously respawn.
You could even make an entire level that involved hopping from point A to point B on only creature brains, while working your way in and out of puzzles and hazards and traps.

Overall, its a great idea that you could use and expand upon in many ways.

a^That'd be nice, but with just what I have now the thermo's maxed out. I over heated twice, even after removing a good portion of the second staircase. I am working on other variants of the idea nontheless...2009-06-28 15:45:00

Well hopefully you find a good thermometer workaround, or at least a way to cram in more, because I really want to see some interesting levels come out of this concept.

Haven't played it, but it sounds similar to something I used in my Sack Ninja Training level, where you have to bounce off of 2 or more brains in succession to continue... Granted I didn't use a staircase. This concept could be used to make an infinite side-scrolling challenge level... Could be fun.2009-06-28 22:22:00

I just realized how you can make the thermometer go down a lot. Make all of the non-brain blocks one large staircase, because one large object takes up much less space than all of those smaller squares. Trust me, I know from experience.

And by the way, I cheated the system and have a higher score than everyone else on the level.

Kept respawning the first block on the second staircase? Yeah, I knew about that. Didn't bother to fix it, though, since it takes a while to get higher scores that way. I'll try one big staircase. Not sure why I didn't before...2009-06-30 04:13:00

First two blocks on the first staircase actually.

And did you see my previous post, a great way to lower the thermometer is to make all of those "under-blocks" (the non-electrified ones) into one giant block. I had made a maze level at one point and all of the blocks were single squares of dark matter and the thermometer eventually overheated. But then I started combining them, and the thermometer went all the way down to about 1/4. I know your problem is slightly different, but you might have more room for brains and such if you tried this.

I glued all of the "under-blocks" together, though. Or does that not have the same effect? Congrats on the new avvy, btw.2009-06-30 18:26:00

No, that won't work, just run the material tool through them to make it all one. You will see a substantial thermometer drop hopefully. And thank Rhyfelwr for the avatar, he did an absolutely amazing job.

Liked the level. Don't see why you had to emit them though...did they generate a random pattern or something?
Would love to see this made into a bigger level, maybe not just staircases but flat areas and downward areas to...
4 stars (3 for the actual level and 1 for a nice idea waiting to be built upon) and hearted
