I need some good rpg's to play while I'm at my dad's because he works at night, so I need to kill time. I've got Oblivion and Fallout 3. And I've got a PS3 obviously.2009-06-28 12:15:00

Hi creelers.

RPG's are my favourite games and I must have played hundreds of great ones on different consoles over the years. If you only want recommendations for PS3 I would suggest these :

Final Fantasy 7 ( THE BEST RPG of all time originally on PS1 and now available on playstation store very cheap )

A selection of PS2 titles which may or may not be playable on PS3 ( sorry you'll have to check ). I'm putting these because I honestly haven't found 1 decent RPG made for PS3 specifically. All these games are awesome and listed in no particular order :

Dragon Quest - The Journey of the Cursed King

Dark Chronicle

Shadow Hearts Covenant

Shadow Hearts : From The New World

Choose any of those and you're in for a treat if you haven't played them before.

I see, thanks for the advice, might try to go get the money for FF7, I checked it on Wikipedia, apparently its one of the best RPG's of all time.

Well for PS3 I'd recommend Folklore... it's not really an RPG, more an action game with RPG elements. It's a long enough game though and has a murder mystery sort of story. If you like RPGs you might like it.

Also Valkyria Chronicles is worth a look. It's an SRPG with a long, high quality story and a battle system that is part strategy, part third person shooter. I haven't played it very much but what I have played is excellent.

If you like the Disgaea games, Disgaea 3 is out on PS3. It's also an SRPG but has a classic SRPG battle system. Worth a look if you're into SPRGs.

You already have Oblivion and Fallout 3 so these 3 are the only ones worth mentioning really. If Oblivion and Fallout 3 are the only RPGs you've played I'm not sure how much you'll like the games mistervista recommended as they are all JRPGs which are quite different to WRPGs like Oblivion and Fallout 3. However you still might like them. I'm just one of the those people that likes WRPGs and really doesn't like JRPGs (despite trying to get into them multiple times).

Anyway hope these few recommendations help.

In all the years I've been playing I've only seen the acronyms RPG and MMORPG.

What are SRPG ( I assume Strategy ? )
WRPG
and JRPG ?

SRPG = Strategy (eg. Disgaea, FF Tactics)
WRPG = Western (eg. Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout 3, Baldur's Gate, maybe Mass Effect)
JRPG = Japanese (eg. Final Fantasy, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star, Star Ocean, Grandia etc.)

They help to define what kind of RPG the game is but is still a little limited. Like Oblivion plays very differently to Baldur's Gate.

I guess they just define the basic trappings of each sub-genre. Like SRPGs usually have battle systems where you move along squares. WRPGs usually have the most freedom and you create your own character. And JRPGs usually have turn-based battle systems and follow specific characters and relatively linear stories.

Fallout 3 and Oblivion are not the only RPG's I've played, I might give Valkyria Chronicles a go, I remember playing the demo and found it quite fun so might get it.2009-06-28 19:45:00

I do indeed recommend Valkyria Chronicles. It's an incredibly deep stategy / role playing game. The plot and characterisation is just awesome. I would not call it a "3rd person shooter" though. As you would know from playing the demo, the majority of the game is turn based. You do need to react and plan things while moving in almost real time and lining up shots, but things can be paused at almost any time and running out blindly without armor, cover or back up tends to get your troops killed very quickly indeed.

But if you enjoyed the demo, I highly recommend the full game. It can be sometimes hard to find but it looks like at least in Australia that distribution has picked up a bit, which is a good thing.

Yes, it does have stats by the way. A whole lot of stats too. If you like fiddling with numbers and writing out notes, you may just love it.

If you've got Oblivion, then play it. It's that simple.2009-06-29 23:08:00

I think Disgaea 3 is a really good rpg

I usually don't like strategy orientated games but i think Disgaea has pulled it off really well, it's still a load of fun if you're terrible at strategy games like me
