A royal love letter

Archive: 40 posts

Heyho
in order to allow you to get to known me and my style better i'd like to present you my levels
Both belong to my Level-Story called A royal love letter (so that's how i named the topic).

i planned to build seven parts. these are part one and two so far

Part 1:
Name: A royal love letter 1 - The swampy depth
Description: You're in prison for unknown reasons (maybe for smuggling bubbles?). But one day you get released because the king wants you to visit him. You have to travel to the capital where the king plans to offer you a deal that could solve your problems.
Unfortunately (or fortunately?), there are some issues that make the way much longer than planned...
takes: 10 minutes
Screenies:

Part 2:
Name: A royal love letter - The capital
Description: You finally arrived the town. The king awaits you in his throneroom but you have to walk acoss the harbour and the bazaar.
takes: 10 minutes

I hope I'll get some feedback and advices how to make it better
I'm going to use this topic to let you know about updates or new parts of the story

Part 1 is one of the best levels around... superb visuals. Like I told you on LBPF, it's a bit of a hassle grabbing the floor/wall instead of your key, but other than that, it's perfect.

Can't wait for more of this series.

I loved both of your levels! I'm glad you stopped by. As I was saying in a recommendations thread, your level design is so close to Media Molecule's style, it's scary (scary good). They were brilliantly designed, and had some truly fun and original platforming moments.

Favorite moment from Part 1: The gollum who lifted up the ceiling - it looked great and was functionally genius.

I really don't have many complaints for your levels to make them better. The story dialogue kind of cut out after the first little bit - perhaps you could throw is some arbitrary magic mouths talking about the king or something. It didn't ruin the level(s) at all, it just would have made it a more cohesive story. The dragon at the end of Part 1 was wicked tough because I didn't realize right away where you are allowed to grab. I kept jumping to his main body, which was immediately followed by death. Thank heavens for the infinite checkpoint, ha ha.

Truly, though, these levels feel like they could've been inserted into MM's story mode, and no one would've noticed. Scary good, and welcome to LBPC.

You got :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart from me

Edit: what does your thermometer look like on these?

Played these a couple days ago, amazing levels. Loved the whole visual style of each. The only problems I had were with the first level and the power grain, or I think thats what it was called, a bit difficult to take it out of the second wheel. And the 2 player part where you had to pull a switch to open the doors, I actually managed to open it alone. 5 stars and hearts, can't wait for more of these.2009-06-28 07:47:00

Just played the first and loved it. Had one or two minor issues with falling past layers when trying to get the power thing back to the golem, but that wasn`t really an issue.

It kinda screwed up at the end though. After I killed the boss, I fell down and landed in the gas. Then when the scoreboard appeared I think the floor that appears was stopping me respawn so it kinda just sat there not quite making up its mind before letting me finish the level without sackboy on screen.

Anyway it`s absolutely brilliant and I loved it start to finish. 5 stars, a heart and a 'brilliant' tag.

I've only hearted two creators: mrsupercomputer, and you.

Your levels look completely amazing; the atmposphere is brilliant, completely dreamy, so fantasy like; I can't help it but to notice that Tim Burton feel that the first part had, with all those spirals and those amazing characters (spinning heads? Neat concept!)

The gameplay, was, on both levels, fantastic, and I did enjoy it more than some levels in the story mode.

The only "but" it's on the dragon/snake, the final boss of the first part; I still don't know how I was supposed to defeat it, even if I managed -somehow-to.

Besides, the story it's simple but effective, with slight touches of humor (I would stop him but I'm afraid of fire lol). And let's not forget the amount of detail; It's nice to see that you work more on the form of the objects that on placing stickers and things like that.

What to say? I'm really waiting for the third part, and I do really hope that you manage to finish all of those; I'll be playing them with a smile on my face.

Seriously, just keep up -cause it's hard for me to imagine how could you improve even more- the superb work.

I hear a lot people compare some levels to MM's story levels, yet IMO very few levels ive seen actually come close to their quality. This level and the other by this creator come really close. Great visual style, story-telling and level layout made this easy to heart.2009-07-02 02:07:00

hi, folks

Part 3:
I finally decided how the storyline of a royal love letter will continue:
In the deep diamond mines of mexico, you'll have to search a huge diamond which is needed to focus light
what you need the light for is not being told yet

there will be screenies soon, but at the moment i'm still busy with scribbeling concept art

boss guide:

Many people complained about the boss of part one which was reputed to be too hard.
so instead of making it easier i'll tell you how to beat it in the easiest way, although there are instructions in the level:
1. The pink snail-guy tells you to grab the snake's tongue. It's easy so just do it. This works best if you stand in the first layer, as close to the snake as possible. Wat until the head is on the floor and until the mouth is open, then jump and grab.
2. Now the brains on the snake's back are vulnerable.
Behave like in step one but wait till the mouth is closed. now it's necessary to grab the snake's upper lip. when the sanke distances itsself from the floor, let the lip go an try to get catapulted on the back. bursting the brains now can be tricky but it should work after a few tries

good luck and mtfbwy - luke

PS: any ideas as far as my new level is concerned? i'd love to hear your suggestions
PPS: thanks for your feedback. it makes me happy that you like my levels

Whoah, so somehow we're getting some kind of canyon level for the third part? Great!

As a suggestion... well, I don't know what the diamond's light is for, but since you're trying to reach the sky, to deliver the letter, the light could be used to summon/call some kind of transport/NPC that takes you to the sky realm. Or that TRIES to take you to the sky realm, cause as far as I've seen, you love to make vehicles crash xD

Besides, thanks for the guide on the boss. I also knew the part of grabbing the tongue, but I ignored the thing about grabbing the upper lip. If you feel like it, you could explain that in the level too, cause I spent a long time trying to get through the snake and climb from behind to kil it, cause I didn't know how to catapult myself. Now shall be much easier! Thanks a lot!

PS: I left a comment on your profile, I'd like you to read it. Thx!

Playing Part 1 at the moment...The style of your level is beautiful! So far the level seems pretty flawless in the sense that it blocks you off before you complete whichever task and the fact that the level changed so i could drag back the grain was a pleasant surprise, added a bit of a puzzle to the platforming. Some parts are very cinematic and I could easily see this being a MM created story level!
Just finished part one...very good...didn't find any flaws...at least as good as MM professional story levels...beautiful...5 stars and hearted!
Part two...I can see you have lots of hidden paths and sticker triggers in this level...I saw a few in the first one but I didn't particularly look...hidden things are always a plus for me! Lots of nice platforming from the start of this level, not sure about all the little enemies though but that's just my opinion really.
I failed at the part with the face...a beautiful part though...very clever...don't have time to go through again but I will soon!
Very well done 5 stars and heart for part two as well.
My bad, you didn't have F4F...oops...

Absolutely loved your levels. Looking forward to Pt.3.

You have a great unique style. And I liked how you actually use the mixer on the music. To me it doesn't seem like a lot of folks do that. When I started part one I actually thought you had created that music until it played for awhile and I realized which track it was. It was well chosen and the opening scene instantly grabbed me.

IMHO I wouldn't dumb down your new bosses too much. I'm terrible at actually playing platform type games but I was able to beat the bosses in your levels. If I can do it, anyone can.

@zipcity: really? omho rex from the metal gear solid-pack was harder...
@J-thunder: thanks i think, the mixer is a great way to create athmosphere. adding e.g. some cool drums fits perfectly to some platforming and jumps
that's why i use it
btw you can look forward to more bosses cause i do plan to build one for each following level

Hey luke,
I played this again last night, and noticed something during the snake boss at the end of part 1. You can actually fling yourself onto a ledge in the back plane, right above the checkpoint. Then, from here, you can time your jump, and it's fairly easy to kill him in one swoop.

I did experience the same problem that was mentioned here earlier, also, where you kill the boss, but then immediately die. The finish doesn't respawn you, and it seems like a kind of glitch.

Great fun though, looking forward to part 3!

I just finished part 1 and all I can say is WOW! It started with a fantastic opening sequence with a cool train, some great characters, and creepy atmosphere. The puzzles and platforming were fun throughout and I absolutely loved the stone golem guy and the final boss also looked amazing!

I did find the boss, while cool, to be a tad frustrating. I didn't see this thread at first, so after pulling the tongue, I kept trying to jump to the arm because it kind of looked like a step. Finally, I figured out that I need to grab the upper lip, but that also took a while and I had had a hard time staying on top snake and kept falling to my death.

Overall though, I thought this level was fantastic and I'm gonna check out the other chapter soon!

First of all, congrats on the MM pick!

Second of all, you have officially created my favorite series EVER.
Third of all, you're an amazing creator, don't stop creating!
...stopping with the annoying numbers here the first two levels were amazing. The gameplay is perfect and flawless, and the graphics are stunning.

My favorite part was in the second one at the big smily/frowny face thingy. Best. Design. Ever. Right there.

Can't wait for part 3!

Oh, and I beat the snake boss very fast. Maybe I got lucky, but it didn't seem all that hard to me....

I remember dude and after hearing the tune for about five seconds I realized I just had to change it. It fits in with my level much better so thanks for that. I'll probably use the third tune from the trailer in the new music pack in my new level. I'm definately going to load up your second level again and finish it later.

As for ideas...google art and go from there. That's what I do. I've barely built anything in my new level but it's so detailed the thermo is halfway there already. If I'm not satisfied with the length of my new level I'm splitting it in two parts so that people can actually enjoy it a little bit more.

Aww man! So it's based in a mine in the canyons right? Okay so how about falling rocks, burning ground, mine carts and conveyor belts, jumping, sliding, cacti, machine malfunction, digging through walls, snakes and lizards, fools gold, real gold, or trapped men or tunnels.

I think you could find something to make out of those ideas with your amazing imagination

Hey Luke, never say never. I wouldn't lock this... you might suddenly have a spurt of inspiration in the future and decide to carry it on.

Keep going with ur new project and i look forward to seeing it. I loved this series and would have liked to see how it would have ended (like lots of other people)... so maybe in the future you might decide to conclude it.Even if the ending has not yet been written, those screen shots u posted looked very promising.
