Does the 'platinum' tag make games look cheaper?

Archive: 24 posts

I brought some games recently that only came with the 'platinum' tag, and i was kind of disappointed at how bad it made the game look!

It's meant to tell the buyer that it's a high quality game, but it does the complete opposite.

What they do is shrink the original cover image and give it an ugly silver border, and then they make that worse by having ugly bright yellow banners!
And they replace the original clear plastic case with one made out of cheap looking silver plastic.

Honestly when i'm looking through my pile of games trying to decide which one to play, i'm subconsciously less likely to choose the one in the ugly silver case no matter how good the game actually is.

Which do you think looks more appealing?

It's probably a failed effort from Sony to distinguish the AAA titles from the rest. If you want a good game, I'd rely more on the "Greatest Hits" catagory. Much more titles to choose from. And yes, that indeed looks ugly. Look, Sony, If you want a "Platinum" looking title, at least don't try to make the game look like an Xbox Live Arcade cover. Remeber, Xbox is your "enemy". This is the only time I've ever seen a Platinum title from Sony.
(Platinum is suppose to be an "Xbot only" thing. Odd.)

This is offensive to all Silver people out there!

lol, joke aside...
Yeah, it does kinda look bad...
maybe if they at east made the tag og that shiney cardboard/metal material and actually made it look like platinum ad not regular yellow MAYBE that would look better, but as it is tight now...
Lets jst say i'm willing to look for a regular edition case instead...

Yeah I hate it too. Was the same on PS2 though not as bad. The disc was always awful though, all the platinum discs were shiny silver with black writing. All the discs were exactly the same except for the name.

Yellow was a bad choice. There has to be a better way, I mean are yellow and black the cheapest inks or something? And even if they are couldn't they have designed something in yellow and black that's a little more attractive.

I'm not saying silver is bad, but you'll probably agree that silver plastic looks horrible
They didn't even make the silver plastic shiny, it's just... grey.

I'm not sure why they chose bright yellow either, it isn't really a colour that i would associate with positive images

What the hell? This is the first time I've seen or heard of this. You're right, it looks much uglier. I was expecting something like that "greatest hits" PS1 and PS2 banner...2009-06-27 17:01:00

It does seem odd, especially considering the console itself is maybe the best looking piece of furniture in my house. Fantastic, sleek design!2009-06-27 20:14:00

Greatest Hits, Platinum, Player's Choice, etc. They all looks worse than the original box but it is really important? really?

It does not change the game. A box is not something you're proud of either. I wonder why we should actually care, I can't imagine a reason. All boxes could be yellow plain + the title in purple Arial Black for all I care.

Like i said earlier, when i'm indecisive about which game i want to play i find myself more likely to choose one without the ugly platinum banner. I guess it's like subliminal advertising or something

For example Uncharted is probably my favourite game but i never play it and always end up choosing something like Motorstorm or LBP instead

Dexiro I completely agree with you. The platinum cases are terrible. I really do refuse to by them. When I wanted to get Uncharted a couple of months back I searched high and low for a copy in it's orginal case but could Bly fnd these platinum cases. In the end I bought a preowned copy, which I don't mms at all so long as the dsk has no scratches and the box isn't tatty, just so I didn't have the platinum case.2009-06-29 00:26:00

The copy that i brought was preowned and it had the platinum case D:

At the time the thought didn't occur to me that i could of found one with the original case but i sort of regret not looking for one now xD

From a visual point of view, yellow is a stand out colour that draws the eye and sticks in your head longer than other colours. That's most likely why they chose the colour that they did. Red also works to a lesser extent, but it's less "look at me!" and more "be careful".

The silver is a bit ugly though, I must agree. The shrunken cover art is not really ideal either, but the example in the first post showed the default cover art for Australia in the second picture. The first picture I had not seen before, likely because the skull is way too big for it's own good.

But as for an overall look, it does look bland. I do like to look at pretty boxes, and if I can I prefer to buy new and special editions for games if they are worth getting. Sometimes that's not practically possible though, and a platinum disc or however you want to call the mass printing version allows people to buy older games brand new at a cheaper price, which is certainly not a bad thing in and of itself.

At least they have not changed the disc print for platinum discs for the PS3. Those simplified ones for the PS1 and PS2 were awful.

I understand that they were trying to grab peoples attention, but the problem is that it repulses them once they've seen it xD

I personally don't see a problem with the red banner. I know red can sometimes be associated with negative things like you said, but the greatest hits banner has pulled it off well.

And in the UK that shade of yellow is almost always associated with warnings!
If it had more of an orangey tint to it then it'd be a bright happy colour - but it isn't, to me it looks like an ugly warning sign

In terms of marketing platinum games, the box doesn't really matter that much. it's not NPI, it's not an unknown. They aren't trying to grab your attention with the packaging. Games only get to be platinum once they've sold enough copies so generally they are well known, well established games. The name of the game is all the marketing you need. And if I was considering buying a game, the package would have zero influence on my decision. I'll have read reviews, played demos, watched vids etc etc and by the time I see the pack, my mind will be made up.

The package doesn't really bother me so much as the discs in the PS1/PS2 platinum titles. I've got ~50 platinum titles from those consoles, in a cd wallet... it's a feakin' nightmare to find anything.

But yeah, they do look rubbish and there is no need to make them look that rubbish.

I COMPLETELY AGREE!

We get 'Platinum' versions here in Australia, rather than Greatest Hits like the other regions. They look absolutely horrible, and I always go out of my way to avoid them. But in that sense I think maybe their marketing has actually worked, as it always encourages me to buy the game before the case changes...

(either that or I buy the game pre-owned so that I can get the original artwork on the front).

In any case this is a horrible idea, it really feels like they are trying to punish the players who postpone buying the game until it become cheaper...
