SackMech Intro?

Archive: 5 posts

Well, my project is going along smoothly, but more and more I feel that starting the series right off in a training level is a bit boring. I would like to make an intro, either as a separate level or at the start of the first level, which just gives a quick tease and taste of what's to come (as well as introducing the setting).

Here's some ideas I've come up with so far :

A slideshow of various scenes on stickered cardboard, with mouths to explain the story.
Various artistic, close-up shots of parts of the player's mech, culminating with the view of the entire mech, with mouths explaining the story along the way.
Various choreographed scenes of animated NPC mechs walking around and firing at eachother, with mouths for the radio chatter of the pilots :

In all cases, the players would just have to sit back and read the text/watch the scenes, which would cycle automatically to the next set until the end where I would display the SackMech logo. Because this might be dull to many players, I want to make the intro optional.

I don't know which method is better though, is it better to have an intro "level" which is just the intro and a scoreboard basically, or to put the intro as part of the first level?

Plus if anyone has a more interesting idea for a series intro, I'm open to suggestions.

If it'll fit into your thermo, I'd suggest an intro within the level itself, as a lot of people don't like playing playing intro-only levels.2009-06-25 15:36:00

Yeah. There's also the problem of an intro "level" not generating plays for the actual level and vice-versa. Obviously the thermo will have the final say on what I can or can't do as an intro in the first level.2009-06-25 15:58:00

Intro level sounds pretty cool, yeah, people might not like intro levels, but that's only if they're short or don't have anything interesting, but i'm pretty sure if its well made and some Mech battles its sure to attract people's attention, bringing more plays to the actual level and to te rest of your levels.
Remember, everyone likes a good "movie level"

i agree with silverleon, movie levels are always good if done well, and i think mech combat would make for a paticularly good one..2009-06-25 18:20:00
