Final Chronicles 1 (a big rpg)

Archive: 20 posts

After discussing new genres being created in LBP I got inspired and really wanted to test what this game was capable of creating!

But since i'm not creative enough for that I thought i'd try to push forward the RPG genre within LBP

I've planned a huge open world steampunk RPG that involves a lot of flying around, with a nice grabby sword.

I'm also including a level up system!
The main method of gaining exp is killing the various enemies with your sword, but there are also a few side quests - some which lead to some very exciting secrets

I have the world map planned out, but i've prepared a nice preview of the starting areas.
I don't want to give away ALL of my information because I want this level to be about exploration

This is a VERY ambitious project so i'm not entirely sure if this is going to work.

There's bound to be problems with the logic though and I'm not sure how the thermometer will treat me.
There's a reason I put a '1' in the title though, depending on how well this goes i'm not going to hold back from creating a sequel

Oh and i might give away more info later if the response is good

Well it definitely looks and sounds cool, so i'm in. Mind telling how you plan on using the sword mechanic? The one time i used swords in my levels, i had to use jetpacks to lift em and wield em reasonably =/

you say theres bound to be logic problems... do you know of any at the moment?

looking forward to it

Well the first post sort of hints towards what the sword mechanic is

"a lot of flying around, with a nice grabby sword."

It's just a jetpack and a spongy sword, nothing groundbreaking

Looks awesome, and making it Steam Punk will definitely make it more original.

You should make it so each enemy or quest is connected to a larger or smaller block in a large tower off screen, so when you kill it, the tower shrinks, allowing you to give exp.

This will definitely be an epic level if you can do it!

Well i've just finished planning everything out in-game
Lots of card telling me where and how big the areas are going to be

It's scary though because i've hit all of the boundaries xD
I'm going to have to do some serious optimization if i want this to work!
I'm not going to bother going into too much detail since you'll be too busy whizzing past everything in your jetpack, but at the same time i want it to look as polished as possible

Another problem i've come across is getting lost!
There's an awful lot of sky to get lost in if you decide to fly upwards for whatever reason, and it's quite easy to get lost in some large main areas too.
It'll be a fun design challenge to keep the player from feeling lost in such a large world

Ah *facepalms* i read that wrong. I was thinking they were seperate Actually making it Steampunky will make the jetpack fit in easily

You could create boundaries with flight if you wanted... put an invisible ceiling or gas or something, and just warn the player that if they fly up too high they'll run out of fuel and burn up in the atmosphere or something

I have the ceiling boundary all sorted out - there's going to be a strangely large cloud formation blocking your path
Something else i need to make sure doesn't eat up too much thermo since they usually use a lot of circles

And i actually added the steampunk bit at the last second to justify having the jetpack,
I've always wanted to make a steampunk level so i guess this is a great opportunity

Oh and i forgot to add!
You start off in the Mage Tower, it's where you get your first sword and jetpack from

I'm not entirely sure what it is, I just always like the theme of things that say they're steampunk

I think it's a mix of an older era like victorian or medieval with a newer one with gadgets and robots.
I'm probably not the best person to explain it

My level is going to be a mixture of a fantasy era with castles/dungeons mixed with technology such as the jetpack and a few other things

Steampunk is a genre based arpund sort of making very futuristic things, but in a sort of classic steam victorian style. When it's pulled off right, it looks amazing.

As for the level barrier, shrink some dark matter untill it goes invisible and put it across the level to make an invisible barrier

I've already said i have the barriers sorted out

I need barriers to stop the player from going into areas that they aren't a high enough level for, but they're going to be visible as well.

Blocking off areas until you're a high enough level does make the level a bit more linear, but without it you could just fly to the final area and complete the level which is something I want to avoid.

If it goes well i might try something a bit different for the sequel, but for now it's one area after the other
It's not too bad though there'll be plenty of secrets to search for

Sounds very promising, especially the experience points idea. I'm interested to see ow this turns out. Do you know if you will be needing beta testers?2009-06-25 18:01:00

Yeah I'll definatly need some beta testers, it'll be a while before there's enough content to test though.

Oh and if anyone wants to contribute, i'm more than happy to share some enemy ideas and designs if you want to help make some of them.
There are a few bits of architecture that someone could help with too

If anyone does contribute, remember that this is a risky sort of level and there's a high chance that things can get replaced or cut out completely, so don't get annoyed if what you made didn't make it into the finished level.
There's still a small chance that something will go terribly wrong and I'll have to rethink the level completly!

Here's a map of the lvl 1 Dungeon anyway
It's a simple design, but It should serve it's purpose well

I'd love to beta test if possible
I'll try to think of a few objects etc. and make them next time I go on.
Your design confuses me, what exactly am I looking at?

Steampunk isn't futuristic stuff in victorian times, Steam Punk is a time, kind of like the Victorian times, but where most things run of steam. So metal and steam are pretty much every doing everything. There can be robots, but metal robots that run on steam. No futuristic laser shooting, tie-fighter flying robots.

But the dungeon looks cool! You are good at drawing!

You should make an avatar like that, with a detailed background then the shadowed figure.

I agree the visual ideas are good but im afraid i dont quite understand the layout, is the bit at the bottom a door and they have to go into the monster area to get a key or is it just sort of an optional thing to get xp?2009-06-25 20:06:00

@Cog

Ah ok I think I understand it a bit better now
I knew it wasn't futuristic stuff I just didn't know how to explain it

The jetpack still fits quite well with the steam-powered theme though

@redmagus

The door at the bottom isn't important at the moment
It just leads to a higher level area
