A Walk in the Park

Archive: 7 posts

A platforming level with a variety of obstacles, A Walk in the Park is designed to keep coming at you with new danger at every turn. Using SCIENCE I deduced which parts of levels were the most fun and combined many of them in this level.

The opening:

Subterranean section:

Race!

While I was taking these pics, I had clicked "Play Online" and of the five people who cycled through, zero of them could handle the first obstacle. Is it really that bad? I felt this level was my best yet, but its two stars seem to contradict that sentiment. I'd appreciate feedback, and would be glad to give some in return.

Alright Just got through it and I'll say one thing it sure wasn't a walk in the park.

For started the name is generic, how generic you say? There are literally two pages of levels with the same name.

One thing that I have noticed is that if your level has any semblance of challenge it or cheap kills it will get very far away from page one of cool lvls.

The huge blocks that you used for barriers were kind of an eyesore when you could have used a few tricks here and there like and invisible wall or something like that. The obstacles were pretty generic as well and with no new atmosphere it wasn't something new to behold.

One thing I did like was the trampoline, I've yet to see one that worked so easily till now.

I gave it 3 stars but really I kind of think it deserved two because it really does need work. Try looking around a few threads to see what you can learn, and don't worry if you don't get crappy ratings. I've spent weeks at a time on levels and I barely get any plays but just building is the fun part

I guess I should've researched the name. I hadn't played any with that name, so I was hoping it wasn't too common.

I appreciate the criticism. I'll check out your level tonight.

yeah i just found this level too hard. also, on parts where you need to grab onto something and it pulls you up, make an emitter emit another one after the first one is pulled up, because one time i got squished while being pulled up and there wasnt another one for me to grab, therefore forcing me to restart the level.2009-06-25 01:17:00

Hi. I played this yesterday and pretty much agree with the other guys.

I thought you had some great ideas in there and some very clever mechanisms in play.

I did think though it was let down by the gameplay as there were too many cheap deaths that couldn't possibly be avoided. Those giant electric balls in particular were really annoying as they just came out of nowhere and gave you no chance at all to avoid them.

I was really peed off when I spent ages trying to get past those spikes and when I eventually managed it and walked up the slope at the other side a giant electric ball that was impossible to see coming killed me and I had to do it all over again.

I thought it was fun but in the end I had to quit before I could finish it. I was in the race section, and I had just done the spikes and glass electric section about 15-20 times. I finally made my way through it, only to have a giant ball of electricity land on me as I left through the uphill opening. I was not ready to go through it all again and I quit. It is a fun level, its probably a little too hard for the average player, and very unforgiving at sections. I think maybe more spawn points placed after exceptionally hard areas would make it more playable. Asethetically, it looked better than most levels, but the out of place spikes and electric balls popping into existence drew away from the overall atmosphere. The trampoline was a nice addition, even though when I got a good height, I would land on the side of the sponge and lose all of the height I had been building up, which was frustrating to say the least.2009-06-28 20:37:00

Thanks for the comments. I really misjudged the difficulty on my level. Since I played through it dozens and dozens of times while creating it, I guess I lost perspective on it.

Most obstacles have multiple solutions. For example, the glass/electric section is pretty hard to jump across, but very easy if you just swing on the spongey top. Likewise, for the trampoline section, you don't have to jump on top of the clouds. You can swing along the bottoms successfully.
