Anyone else hate internet/forums usage of words such as "Fail"?
Archive: 48 posts
I don't know why but it always bothers me when I see someone on a forum type out "EPIC FAIL!" when someone makes a mistake or someone makes a worthy effort but gets judged for it, or "PWNED!" when they've got an upper hand in an argument. Maybe I'm getting old, I'm already 21! but it just seems childish (in a bad way) and rude. Luckily I don't see it happen much on these forums, and I by no means want to start an argument about it, but what are your views? Childish behaviour or just mindless fun? | 2009-06-24 12:34:00 Author: noddle111 Posts: 174 |
FAIL! ok, but seriously... FAIL! ... anyway, overuse of it does get annoying :/ | 2009-06-24 12:38:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |

FAIL! ok, but seriously... FAIL! ... anyway, overuse of it does get annoying :/ Haha! I was expecting that Oh, and ZOMG, apparently it originates from someone pushing the "Z" key on the keyboard by mistake instead of "Shift" to type OMG! in all-caps. It then just caught on and used as a more humorous OMG! Example: "ZOMG! you didn't know!!!? EPIC FAIL! PWNED!!" | 2009-06-24 12:46:00 Author: noddle111 Posts: 174 |
LOL, ZOMG, Im such a NOOB. What an EPIC FAIL, OK BRB... | 2009-06-24 12:53:00 Author: wexfordian Posts: 1904 |

Doesn't really bother me on the forums. After spending a fair amount of time IM'ing at work and texting my kids, I can see the need for shortcuts. And todays FAIL, was my generation's SAD or WASTED! Just fad speak. The only thing that ever really makes me cringe (other than young men with no belts walking bowlegged to keep their pants from falling as they deliberately expose 3-4 inches of their boxer short underwear - this I will NEVER get)... I actually heard a teenage girl the other day saying aloud, "IDK" rather than than, "I don't know". I mean really... WTF? Truly, this is an (wait for it...) EPIC FAIL. | 2009-06-24 17:06:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
Agreed with v0rtex, the acronyms etc. are just part and parcel of informal text-based communication, although reducing every word down to it's smallest form with no punctuation does my nut in. If you can be take the time to learn all the alternative spellings then surely you can take the time to learn to type faster? And the slang terms just vary with time depending on what's cool and hip (it's just a shame that "cool" and "hip" aren't cool and hip anymore). I actually use phrases like WTF and FTW in real life, but I assure you it is purely ironic (both accronyms take longer to say than the full words). @noddle. Yes you are getting old. And jaded. And cynical. Learn to enjoy it | 2009-06-24 17:19:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I think most people just use it as a form of fun. In fact, I find em' quite funny. Overuse of them does get VERY annoying though. | 2009-06-24 18:15:00 Author: lk9988 Posts: 1077 |

I think it depends on how you're viewing it. Some people say it jokingly, and maybe post a funny picture. Some do it to intentionally hurt someone's feelings. It doesn't bother me though. | 2009-06-24 18:17:00 Author: Gr33n Eraser Posts: 8 |
Yeah the Epic Fail truly happens if you use those in real life... . | 2009-06-24 18:19:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |
I'm fine with any Internet slang being said on the Internet, but saying it in real life is what bugs me. I know many who almost speak entirely in internet slang, both on the computer and off. It's quite annoying, and just makes you look stupid. But of course, the occasional fail or epic fail isn't that big of a deal. | 2009-06-24 18:21:00 Author: Kog Posts: 2358 |
They're funny every once in a while, but if they are on every other post it just becomes lame. | 2009-06-24 18:40:00 Author: Code1337 Posts: 3476 |
I like using fail. Adds humorous effect...^^* | 2009-06-24 19:10:00 Author: KoRnDawwg Posts: 1424 |
Then of course, there's www.epicfail.com (http://www.epicfail.com/), which can be quite hilarious. | 2009-06-24 19:14:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |

... never doubt 4 chan :kz: ... basically some guy mistype owned as pwned (p and o being next to each other),k and so everyone began copying him. and ZOMG... ZOMG sounds more awesome then OMG...? :/ lol, actually, it was just a typo that happened to a lot of people since the "P" is right next to the "O", but for some reason kinda fit in, so they kept it as the expression Pwned (can be pronounced as "pawned" or "owned") Same goes for ZOMG. Some people do overuse it and makes the word and the user appear childish or like just and idiot. But its can be quite funny if used with moderation and in the right moments, not just any random time. So yeah can be annoying or childish, but that pretty much depends on who uses it. Unlike some people in this thread which are just saying them along with others just to "seem" funny... Ok we get it, the thread is against it so you use it, haha there i laughed, can we stop that now? | 2009-06-25 00:05:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |
I belive (dont quote me here) that pwned first originated in a game called warcraft, ...A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."... As for the use of such terms i really dont mind them on occasion but it gets really annoying when your playing an online game of anysort and there is a constant stream of bad swearing, grammar and abreviations, (bad swearing not meaning the use of bad words but they litterally dont seem to know what word is supposed to go where) Though coming from a different angle, this is the next form of developing sub language, like gibberish and pig latin, its a way of communicating verbally without using words. | 2009-06-25 00:27:00 Author: redmagus Posts: 667 |
I love all that crap, I frequently use fail, epic failed and pwned in real life. | 2009-06-25 01:28:00 Author: mcgrory1991 Posts: 49 |
I think it's sad that people these days are too lazy to put "ure" at the end of fail. Seriously, you people do realize how stupid it makes you seem, right? | 2009-06-25 01:47:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |
It happens on the bungie forums a lot . The bungie forums are a vicious place rofl. you get flammed like no other lol | 2009-06-25 03:11:00 Author: Snrm Posts: 6419 |
I thought PWNED was PUBLICLY-OWNED. EPIC FAIL on mahslef. I don't mind it when people say it, just my respect for them goes down and I think their intelligence is lower. Also ,you should see it on the Bungie.net forums. Ahh, Porch day. | 2009-06-25 06:47:00 Author: TheMarvelousHat Posts: 542 |
I thought PWNED was PUBLICLY-OWNED. I dont think that was its original meaning but it verywell could be one meaning. I however frequently pwn nubz in private. | 2009-06-25 06:50:00 Author: redmagus Posts: 667 |
You might dislike people using internet accronyms and slang in normal speech, but just you wait until emoticons start slipping out into the real world. "Hey, how you feelin'?" "colon, close brackets." This will happen, it's a scientific fact. | 2009-06-25 13:32:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |

"colon, close brackets." This will happen, it's a scientific fact. I hope not, but one thing I do think will happen is that people will say lol out loud more often, and not know what it means, just using it as a substitute for a laugh. History shows this, we say ok (or okay) all the time, but not many people know what it means. OK stands for Oll Korrect. It's purposefully ironic because by saying ok you are acknowledging that everything is correct, but it's spelled wrong. So there's a little history lesson for you guys. | 2009-06-25 13:46:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
Heh, yeah I hope not as well. Strangely enough I was actually reading up on the etymology of OK last week (don't ask) and the "oll korrect" is one theory but as with many things like this, there is no clear cut answer to where it came from, which actually makes me quite colon, open brackets TBH | 2009-06-25 14:07:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I always though PWNED meant "Pawned" as in, pawn shop :o | 2009-06-25 14:09:00 Author: AwesomePossum Posts: 446 |
I don't mind it so much on the internet (unless it's used excessively). However, I met someone who said it out loud, and a lot too. Sorry if anyone here does that, but it sounds really really dumb to say 'fail' in real life out loud. Don't do it. | 2009-06-25 14:11:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
The whole "Fail" and "Pwned" thing is about the only meme that I like. I think it's funny. Ever seen failblog.org (http://www.failblog.org/)? Awesome website. EDIT: I very occasionally say "Fail" in real life. But only if someone REALLY fails. Badly. | 2009-06-25 16:01:00 Author: alexbull_uk Posts: 1287 |

I like using Fails when something freakin' hilarious happens (such as MXC ). But not to an extent where the WHOLE FORUM IS TAKEN DOWN . Shame that such immaturity can lead to such dire consequences . R.I.P. Burnout Forums... | 2009-06-26 04:36:00 Author: Outlaw-Jack Posts: 5757 |

Any word like lol, Epic fail, rofl and the likes are banned in my household. Under penalty of being utterly stupid. My brother has a friend that actually says the word 'lol' when he's talking and finds something internet funny. I say internet funny because internet funny isnt really funny... i bet you 9 out of 10 times when someone says lol they are not physically laughing. And back to my bro's friend you can tell in his voice he's not laughing cause it's a droning 'lol'. it's soooo annoying thanks for the rant! /rant off | 2009-07-06 22:31:00 Author: BlackToof Posts: 172 |

Only a few times I find these slang words fitting. But when they do fit into the situation, they really do. But most often I feel the stating "fail" is rather superfluous and sometimes even annoying, just like most anything done in excess. | 2009-07-12 23:40:00 Author: ll_ye Posts: 236 |
i'm more of a fan of posting images that convey your feelings. for example: the picard facepalm pic | 2009-07-12 23:51:00 Author: Deftmute Posts: 730 |
