Metal Gear Solid: The Philanthropy Files Vol. 1 (Spotlighted)

Archive: 15 posts

This is a level I've been working for months and months. This level barely didn't even exist, after I was 75% through with it, my save corrupted. I had to collect all items again and rebuild the entire thing from scratch. I almost gave up but decided to make it again. So here it is!

Level: Metal Gear Solid: The Philanthropy Files Vol. 1
PSN: TripleTremelo
Description: Snake and Otacon pursue their anti-Metal Gear activities with their group Philanthropy. This volume finds Snake in the Middle East looking to stop a new Metal Gear from being built. An original level with elements inspired by the Metal Gear Solid universe.
Previous Levels: The Cause and Effect series (1-3)

I put a lot of work into the details of this level, every building, the Gekko and other enemies and pretty much everything. If you like MGS you'll really enjoy this level. If you have never played an MGS game in your life, you should still really enjoy the level. Feedback/suggestions/etc. welcome and appreciated!

Its hard to elevate above the abundance of MGS levels already out there, but you managed it with this one.

The platforming and gunplay are really well considered, there isn't a million things to grab and jump on but what is there is very nicely thought through. Its also really well paced and engaging, by the time the scoreboard appears you feel like you had a little adventure for 10 minutes, i always like that. The way you started the level has a lot to do with it i think, it hooks you in brilliantly.

I've no suggestions or complaints about any of the gameplay, i really enjoyed it. If i was to think of anything that could be improved, the only thing that comes to mind is the look of the street level, it looks great already, but the background in places looks a little sparse for a city and could have had a little more going on, but thats really nitpicking.

Great level!

I really enjoyed this level. Even though the "theme" has been done many times, you managed a number of things that kept it fresh.

PROS:

+ The text at the beginning really set the stage.
+ The box you ride in on - great idea!
+ Cool boss
+ Falling into darkness and waking up in a jail cell was AWESOME! I think this was the highlight of the level for me - totally unexpected and pulled off nicely.
+ Attracting a negative comment from J.Dizzle. Virtually everything he dislikes is fantastic. I think he played one of his previous levels over 2000 times himself to get into cool pages it was so terrible.

CONS:

- The city could have used a bit more decorating - little details (maybe clothes lines between buildings and such) would liven up the city a bit.

5 stars and a heart, and gave you a creator heart. Fantastic stuff!

Thanks guys. I agree about the city, and that's a good idea about the clotheslines, and maybe some powerlines too.

But I'll have to make room, the level is about as close to overheating as possible. If I place a block of any material not previously used in the level the level overheats. I'll see what I can do.

Oh, and I left a gracious comment on one of J Dizzles levels, I guess I'll delete if he just trolls tons of levels...

Yeah, Dizzle isn't worth it - he used to be on this site until he was silenced. He created threads for levels called "The best level ever" and the "2nd best level ever". I was the only one who tried to do a serious review of his levels and gave him constructive critisism and he started harrassing me in PM messages.

He also was leaving really obnoxious comments on RangerZero's "Ultra Beginners and Girlfriends" calling other plays "lesbos". I think he's probably a jerk kid. Probably has bad parents.

Oh, I remember those threads he made. That guy. Did he get banned or something?

And I added a little more details, I'll post some pics.

God what is wrong with that stupid scoreboard, makes no sense. With the lights on you can see it like launches you when the vehicle disappears. Anyone know why it would do that?2009-06-26 07:57:00

I can't think of anything else that fits with the desert theme that I could add, any suggestions would be nice.

Played last night, but got stuck in the second collapsing building part on last life.

Played again today. Was really cool. I'm not too sure which Metal Gear level I like better... yours or Thegide's Shadow Moses Site B... yours will probably get better as your series continues, but, altogether, I think his may be better as it has more right now...

Still, this level is awesome. Especially loved the ending part where you ride off into the desert with Drebin- fantastic use of the lighting tool there. And I loved the fall into the cell...

All together, 5 stars and a heart. No tag since I kinda always skip tags... force of habit, hard to break, even when I know a good tag, I just skip it automatically... but anyway, loved the level. Loved the little details like the stop sign, which I guess wasn't in the original version...?

Still, can't wait for the rest of the series!

This is a great Metal Gear level! I loved all the little details from the series that you managed to squeeze in like Sackboy starting the level in a box, the awesome Gecko attack, and Drebin's ride.

The platforming and gunplay has a nice flow to it and I loved the cinematic sequences as well. I'm right there with RockSauron about riding into the sunset, that was extremely well done.

My only criticism was the lack of decoration in the city, but that was because I played before you updated it, so I'll go back and take a look at the updates.

I replayed this, and the decorations in the city were very effective. It seems like a small thing, but it added that "authentic" feeling to it. The clothes blowing in the breeze made that area come alive and added that "lived in" feeling. Nice job!2009-06-29 03:48:00

Oh my god, this is the first level I played with the new global lighting system and I was like "Whaaaaaat? You can do that now!? Awesome!" when the screen faded to black or the background changed to a bright orange to symbolize the long journey to the metal gear.

I felt that it was challenging, but pretty accessible overall and very fun. My heart got racing, my blood got pumping, and everything seemed very Metal Gear.

I just played this on the cool pages, I don't really play that many levels, but if they were all as good as this then the world would be a better place

I liked the massive drop into the unknown and then the darkness and bang your in the prison
The rocks that you shoot to make them fall so you can proceed was done nice too.
The end sets the scene very nicely and the use of the global lighting tool there is what made me tag the level Beautiful

:star::star::star::star::star: AND A ♥
Also a ♥ as a creator too
