of course, deadline for round 1 is going to be 2 Sundays from now - so July 5th I'll be judging if I'm not on the road (I'm going on vacation around then) But in that case the second I get online after that, I'll judge round 1 - and all entrants are accepted in the first round!2009-06-24 23:29:00

I actually used paintshop pro, which is the combined simpleness of GIMP and the complex parts of photoshop, inwhich was really good..

It's a shame to see this contest isn't active alot.

I guess I start off first. I created a signature of the movie; X-men origins! I loved the movie and it was a must do.

I also completed it by cropping a piece of the signature for a matching avatar!

Do you cut your own renders moley?

Glad you like it!!!

It took ages to do. I really wanted to do something that I didn't completely rip from google (although I have used 4 other images so I'm not criticizing anyone who does that!! ).

The model itself would have taken weeks to create, so this was already done with an existing t800 model, but all the surface textures, reflections and lighting was done by me to fit in with the other images in the final render. I then just exported it with an alpha channel and overlaid it over the rest.

I'm not sure if its quite right. I preferred the whole head as it looked more impressive, but then it lost the contrast between foreground and background.

The cut-outs on the other terminators aren't perfect, but they'll do!

I just wish I could do a larger version!!

The reason for two threads is to compile the entries in the other thread, then talk about them here. It cleans up the whole competition and makes it infinitely easier to judge.2009-06-29 18:52:00

ROUND 1 JUDGING TIME... kind of

GrahamLif3 - I like this one, makes the movie a part of the sig, gets the screen name in there very cleverly. It's way too big imho, but not going to hold that against it. Could use a border, but animation is a huge plus... especially when it's done well and tastefully like here.

TheCrestFallen - Man this one is cool. Very impressive font work - my only suggestion is you don't HAVE to fall in love with texture effects on every part of the sig. Make some layers crisp and clear with textured ones around them, and they will stand out more and you still have the sweet textured look at the same time.

MoleyNator - Great colors, simple and elegant border - something that was lacking in other sigs this round. Lots of credit for the manual render cutting... and not losing any definition when shrinking the photo. I would add layers to your sigs to make them more detailed... maybe even just some C4D's then go to layer options and make them really transparent, play with the colors, throw texture or blur effects in. Great job with the lighting effect too. My only real gripe is the text is boring... it should have a more imposing shadow or color or maybe even an effect on it. Still like this sig.

Rhyfelwr - Sweet 3d render, very high res and cool sig. This sig BEGS to be a pop out sig, which I know you are all over the transparency tricks with PNG's. Also it is lacking a border, which could be contrasted by having the render ignore the border and pop out but have the rest of the sig still in the confines of the border.

Zommy - Man this is an amazing concept. Love the old look, can't explain how PERFECT the text is. I mean PERFECT, I love it. I hate the border though. You should hilite (or mask if you will) around the gun, or around the focal point of any sig if you're making a fade or a darken style border like this. You still get the appearance of a clean and professional sig border, but you won't end up messing with the picture itself... like in this case it just goes RIGHT through the gun, which looks ok by his hand and maybe even his face, but the barrel should have definitely ignored the border and just been drawn as is. You get through because it's still sweet, and the text is the best placement and style I've seen in a long long time.

TheArmedReaper - This is instantly classic. High contrast, very eye popping... I would like to see your screen name is some cooler font, maybe surrounded by bullet holes to incorporate it instead of using start black and white simple text - which works, but think how cool it would be if it was kind of a mean text all shot up. Just a thought.

Coxy224 - Was this saved as a transparent pop out sig? If so, it has to be uploaded to another site like photobucket, lbpc somehow kills transparency effects when you upload here. I like the placement of the text, and overall just a nicely made sig. Color of the text matches the render which is cool, and you have the border in there ignoring the render on the top part where it pops out which I love! Pretty much what I was talking to Zommy and Rhy about, you did.

Maiden and Yarbone still have like 9 hours before the day is over... So no one is cut yet. I must say this is insanely hard to judge, these are really good sigs - and I can't think of any one reason to cut anyone yet. But I must, and I will... after the last two sigs are in.

Thanks for the kind words Lucky.. Sorry you have to do so much travelling though!!

I felt your comments were constructive and fair!!

Your point about the border and the front layer ignoring it was very valid and I should have thought about that (I could also have put a shadow on the border and then a shadow on the front layer, which would have made it stand out even further). Shame I don't have anything bigger than 500x100 as it makes life very restricted. *goes away kicking himself*

I must admit, I'd hate to be in your shoes - there are some very cool sigs here.

Yeah Maiden, I'll take your entry because of the circumstances... so here is the feedback.

LOVE band of brothers, but you're right seems a bit busy. The render would have been much better in front. Then the picture of all the men which is iconic of the series should be stark contrasted, and behind the render of the one guy. I like this sig a lot, but unfortunately it seems rushed which it most likely was. I'm sorry but with the quality of the other sigs already - I have to cut you already.

Which sucks because I love your sig work. I hope your grandma is doing better.

I would come back and remake the Band of Brothers one - just because it's a great concept and is very close to being a spectacular sig. I would also look for a higher resolution render of the pic with all the men standing in line - OR just make it solid black, like a shadow. Again sorry, someone had to go

but yeah... lol Hopefully when sig contest v5 comes around i'll be in a better position to make one =]

Artwork? We should get a bit more information about the details next time, for example; size ( 500 x 200 ). Artwork can be anything though.2009-07-06 21:46:00

Well typical sig dimensions meaning they don't take up the majority of a post and they're wider than tall.

And I should be more specific on the artwork thing - Use pre existing artwork, like the mona lisa or statue of david for example, something some people would recognize and then go nuts. But honestly this one is basically a free for all so I can see how creative you guys can be, because I need something to separate you all out. The sigs last round were all really good and hard to judge, this just adds another aspect.

If you guys want to agree on a max dimension that's fine - but you all have to agree at the start of a round

Edit: My proposed pixel max would be 200 tall, 600 wide.

Yeah but most (90%) just reference an image in their sig with the IMG tag, and not the actual signature picture uploaded SIGPIC tag.

I think my sig picture is still the first one I uploaded, here

Edit::: guess that doesn't work unless it's actually in the sig. It's this one...

OK - I'm a little lost - forgive me for being really thick!

1) Have we set a size limit yet - I was working to 500x100 but I've noticed a lot using 500x200px - is this the forum limit?

2) Using "original artwork" I always thought was created from scratch - not photos manipulated and layered... :S

3) By "render", do you mean a composite of layers, rendered to one image or a 3D render from for instance 3D Max (which I wish I had!!)

I'm looking forward to this round - there is some serious competition here!

If you think some of mine were better, you must have been looking at someone else's work!

To me, it's quite original. I'm not a great lover of re-hashes of existing artwork, and I thought you used a very simple composition effectively.

There's a nice contrast of colour, while you've managed to keep them all working well with each other.

I like the way the brushes come over the border, and the way the map effect looks like splats of paint.

I like simplicity and this to me is appealing.

Lol, while I'm all about No rules on art week - that sig did make me rethink the size limit of this contest. That is one HUGE sig. And yeah I know my sig down there is pretty big, but pop outs look smaller than their dimensions because they have just a bit popping out.

Look, clarification has arrived.

Original work means it's not a sig you made before, and you didn't rip it off. You can manipulate the heck out of pre existing stuff, as long as it's not like just a cool image you found and stuck your name on it.

Anything that can be considered ART means anything basically this is nearly a limitless topic.

So now to focus on the 7 people left and not me - what size in pixels would be a good max?

I think the maximum should be 500x 300...

So is my entry acceptable since Rhy says it has to be our OWN artwork?

Lol - I'm no judge and I'm glad Luckyshot clarified the requirements. I didn't say it had to be original artwork - I just prefer work that has originality in it. My last version for instance used about 4 layers of existing photographs that were pinched from google. It was only the main front layer on the left that was rendered especially.

Personal preference only and I only commented becuase i was asked.

BTW - I like the photography one you've done as I too am heavily into photography!

Just for the record, I would go along with 500x300, if that is what is being set, but a max of 500x400 would give more scope to have slick "pop-out" sigs. If its set at 500x400 and the whole area is filled in, it might be a bit cumbersome, but then this is up to the artist to judge what is considered best for the composition!

Why need a bigger sig anyways? :O

(then like 500 ? 300)

I always use 350 ? 150

I tried the 600 x 200 on this last one and it was pretty big but it was a lot easier to have that much room in a signature. It makes it easier to incorporate MORE without it getting crowded too easily.2009-07-08 16:45:00

Ok so here's the verdict, and I played around with this a lot.

Starting in round 3 the max demensions will be:
500 by 150 pixels for rectangular sigs
and 500 by 250 for pop out sigs with the majority of the sig not to exceed 150 pixels tall

Thoughts comments?

aha yep - used it so that i know what to do with the tools i it ie. the warp tool etc. But i was rather happy with the outcome, so it became y avatar/sig. though i am making a lot of them at the moment so i don't expect it to be one of my best for long =] at least i hope it isn't, as i would ratehr improve, not get worse =] lol

i like it, one thing i dont like like so much is the art text, sure its well done (so nice job on that) but i just think it could be somewhere else and it would look so much better. may just be me, but it looks out of place. nice job on the rest though!

oh its a shadow xD
still looks out of place lol and the dripping is a bit pixelly

Thanks for the feedback Zommy.

I must admit, I had problems with the text. Initially, I wanted to get a mirror reflection of the lettering without the main lettering actually appearing, but the reflected image wasn't clear enough - then I took ages trying to get the positioning right to create the shadow.. guess it didn't work out quite right

I know the drip is a bit pixelley - it is only about 1 px wide, so it didn't render well...

Thanks for the positive comments.

Ok round 2 results:

CrestFallen - Again, just a beautiful sig through out. The text is obviously not meant to detract at all from the sig, but it could still be a small cursive font, like Jekl... Obviously that would be a subject to address when you would actually add in the name later. I would throw in your screen name from now on just to give me an idea of what you can do with text. Again texture is used through out the whole thing, and it would just draw so much attention to part of the sig if it was clear and surrounded by textured graphics. But I am still a huge fan, in this case - it's just a great looking sig.

GrahamLif3 - This is HUGE! But it's within the confines for this round, just watch out next round has smaller size restrictions. I love the faint city kind of textured over the darker streaks of background. The render is VERY clear and high res, but a bit blurred on the top right - can't tell if that's on purpose to look like it's reflecting the background or if you just cut the render a bit too close and soft edged the camera. I see the same font as in your avatar, which I love.... good choice. Also nice work spreading the words around the sun burst, my only gripe is no border and the cannon rebel tli text may be a bit too much, makes it cluttered.

Moley - man this is a cool artsy graphic! It's just so dark and almost muddy. I really wish this was the same sig with more vibrant colors, more contrast you know? The border is great, clean cut but still carries on the design of the sig just offset from the rest of the background. I'm not a fan of the text at all - sorry. I really can't make out what it says before messed up because the blurry effect around it just doesn't work with the purple right there. Good overlap of the brushes though.

Rhyfelwr - Man those 3D renders are sweet. Not sure why the screen name shows up twice... someone said they didn't like the black text on her arm, but I have to go the opposite way and say I love how it's super imposed on there... could be a bit cleared, less pixelated around the edges of the text, but it follows her shape beautifully. However I hate the other text... It looks straight out of a power point slide lol. Oh well, the background works well, and concept gets you mucho points. Great pop out as well. I see you nailed the sig max size on the dot... haha. Great sig.

Coxy - Great concept, and amazing art work done here. I like the border, and the colors. I can't really give advice on the work, since it was original and from scratch - I just really like it! Is that enough? You need to start working on getting your text to flow with the sig... you can tell that it's an after thought in most of your work. Look at the ridiculous work Yarbone does with text, and see how much it can improve the overall appearance of your sig (see moleynator's sig)

Zommy - Hand drawn skills!!! But really no work done to it outside of that. It's a cool drawing but kind of falls short as a sig. I know you didn't want to edit it at all, but think of the awesome stuff you could have done with it. Thrown in FF13 background, make him look like he was fighting, maybe some lighting effects to give him a shadow... and obviously could have played around with color. Or if black and white was good enough, you should have contrasted it way more, give it depth in some places... or at least you could have if you wanted to, which you didn't want to.

God this kills me to do, but I have to knock out...

Zommy. It was good work and original, but just had little to no signature elements in it this round. I'm sorry I got ya with the art subject.

Good job to everyone else... good luck in round 3

Thanks Graham.. as I've said to a few of the others - I wasn't sure if it was going to be well received.

My wife seems to think that the sig text isn't very readable - and I have to admit on reflection, it isn't that clear, but I wanted it to look like it was being torched! To me, i can read it quite clearly, but thats probably because I know wat I'm looking for.

In more self-criticism, I'm not sure about the quality of the flames coming from the dragon's mouth. It looked great on a black background but when it has the transparency, it sort of looked "added" and not part of the overall sig.. :S

Pleased with the dragon and fire render though.. - It might have looked better without the flames from its mouth and then blending the sig text with the flames at the bottom.

Hmm... I'll have to re-size it to use as my normal sig though... shame.

Rhy - amazing! I mean not much critisism here, it's a shame my parameters I gave are too big for the forum. The only way I could improve your work is to throw in some faint graphics for a sweet depth and layering look... like C4ds or just like generic tattoos in black and white work really well... like star burst and all kinds of crazy stuff you can find. Also this would help your border, which is sweet in color, but could use a bit of depth.

Graham - WOW, this is getting rediculous. This is awesome, I love the painted drop shadow and layering and texture... the colors are familiar *cough current sig, cough* and I think the transparent layer you used might even be the same graphic thats on your current sig... but guess what? It's awesome on both! I absolutely love this sig... and yes I noticed the 3 lines out to the left, just a sweet artistic touch, I usually like more involved or polished text, but yours fits, so can't say anything bad about it.

Coxy - that looks professional. Well done, very high definition everything, and I LOVE the text on his shell. Not sure why you have your name twice, I would have thrown Bowser in there or something like that, maybe Fire or whatever - no harm done with that. It doesn't look like fire though! Looks like red lightening which is still elemental so I like it!

Moley - also a very professional sig. Great coloring around the render and use of border with the layering of the render. The text is interesting and has depth and you definately put some intermediate layering in there to spice up the background. I hate this round, you guys are too good.

CrestFallen - I really like the... oh wait - he couldn't enter due to issues. Everyone stop by and wish him well, I hope things work out - and I'll miss his work in this comp.

So the odd man out is

Moleynator - and it's not a bad thing at all... I can't believe how much everyone has stepped up their game, the only separation was there really wasn't a water feel other than the color blue which is probably my fault for having no idea what mudkip is (here comes the flamespray from coxy) But you did great, and I don't know how long I would have stuck around with this level of quality.

OK - my reflections entry did take *** ages!!!!

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/richergraphics/SIGNATURE-STRIP-Reflection-1.png

Believe it or not, this is not text superimposed over a photograph. In fact, the backgound isn't a photograph at all!!!

I know some will complain about the height, but the scenery in the original render was so clear, I didn't want to dilute it too much. The larger original looks miles better than this

Graham! Hey the sig is supposed to be 150 by 500, or 250 by 500 IF it's a pop out, which I just gave the extra room so people wouldn't feel limited to non popout sigs... so yours is way huge... I guess I'll let it go - I'm really not a stickler for rules.. at all.2009-07-23 01:41:00

Oh god... it's close!!!!!!!!

Graham - nice abstract concept - again, your layering is well put together and I like the use of the cross section bottom left. Text is very well done too.

Coxy - this is (in my opinion) your best work so far. The thing that really struck me was the minimal use of colour on a black and white background which came off really well.

Looking at mine again, it seems a little simple compared with yours, even with the advantage of 3D programs!! Oh well, I like simple - It's my thing.

I don't know about your views, but I sincerely think I have a problem this week.

I like the idea of early judging if Coxy has finished!!!

Well I'm pretty sure I've been one of the last to post my sig each round. Generally finish mine first too and then spend the rest of the time tweaking it
I'm not so sure I'll make it through this round though - it's going to be a very difficult choice.
Good Luck Lucky!

Ok had to break this one down numerically... Scores out of 10 equally weighted, because just straight opinion on my part could not separate ANY of these 3 sigs.
So I scored them based on the following:
Traditional Sig values: borders, flow, color scheme, etc.
Nailing the theme: How well you handled "reflected" theme
Text incorporation: Basically how sweet was your text in the sig?
Creativity: self explanatory
Each scored out of 10 and weighted 25% each, this is as professional of a judging job ever done in a sig contest! Lol, well at least by me it is.

Here we go...
Rhy! An early favorite to win it all, you constantly impress - and this is no exception. I want to see the original you mentioned being much more detailed. Scoring:
Traditional Sig Values: Great appearance of a standard long thin sig, even with the actual dimensions being higher than it looks. The border is solid, but has a suspect spot near the mountain line at the far left part of the sig where I can't tell why the render shows through the border. The colors are solid, not over the top, and very balanced for the nature aesthetic scene you went with. A solid 9 out of 10 here.
Nailing the theme: Ummm yeah, perfect ripple effect on the text, and mountain reflections, the perspective is exactly the same throughout the reflection, and nothing looks out of place. 10/10 here.
Text Incorporation: Again, the text looks like it came out of MS Word or power point, but this time it's almost majestic how it stands out in front of the mountains, and wraps backwards along them. Unreal look to the text, how do you make your font by the way? (answer that when this is all over) I gotta give you a 10 again.
Creativity: This is crazy good too, since you generated the scene yourself, and the pop out gets big points since it works soooo well... Plus rippling a reflection and using water like that wasn't the easiest choice but you went with it anyway... a solid 8 out of 10 here.
Average: 9.25

Graham, definitely my favorite sig of the contest was yours last week, it's just cool. And cool is win. On to the scores shall we?
Traditional Sig Values: Nothing traditional about this one, loses points for being so high vs wide, but the colors are great. The fading border to transparent is again very cool (and also very win) You took a chance on this one knowing it could hurt, and I must say I don't see this being used ever as a SIG, but it's solid mostly here: 7 out of 10
Nailing the theme: Took some explanation, but makes a pretty sweet idea into a pretty sweet sig. I love the quadrant effect you put in the bottom left portion of the sig, splitting it up adding contrast and coloring that replaces what would have been empty boring space, also almost reflecting each corner of the sig in one place. I give you a 9 out of 10 for such a risk here.
Text Incorporation: I have spent A LOT of time doing text, just check out the beer one in my album of my profile, that one took like 3 hours of playing with bubbles. This is very creative and cool looking work that had to take you a long long time which will net you a perfect 10. no complaints here
Creativity: So yeah, what hurt you before pays off here. I've never seen anything like it, and I love it. Completely original look, idea, and implementation of that idea gets you the perfect score here: 10/10
Average:9/10

Coxy, the young gun who will kick all of our collective behinds in graphic arts some day when he gets to our age... Let's see how you did.
Traditional Sig Values: This is the most sig like sig of the bunch, and would most likely be used everyday. The border is a bit thick but has a very cool lighter effect - and I love when you can still see the sig through the border. Black and white is always cool and will always stand out, but to throw in the rainbow was EPIC win. 9/10 here with my only gripe being pixelated lines on the border around the corners, not sure if that was intentional but it looks odd, and the thickness isn't consistent on the border, it's thicker at the bottom vs the other three sides.
Nailing the theme: I spent a long time searching for this picture, so I don't know where you got it, or if the reflection was already there, but this is a beautiful reflection interpretation incorporating not only the basic reflection of what's around, but also the rainbow effect and some graphic overlaying layers make this very cool. 10/10 here, yeah I said 10! get excited.
Text Incorporation: This is another very strong improvement for you. You have the perspective nailed, and placement works well here. Your faults? Well unfortunately I have to compare you to your competition, and I would like to see it BEND with the curves of the glasses, like Rhy's bent around the mountains, also a little more depth would have done a world of good just for overall looks. You can avoid that "stuck here" look and make it LOOK like part of the glasses with an emboss effect, then copy it and paste it on top of itself, move it back a layer and Gaussian blur it a couple pixels to REALLY make it look like blends in. Still your best text to date 8/10
Creativity: I give you full marks for the text placement, and the designs I see within the glasses. The rainbow helped a ton just to give an overall... "woah! that's cool looking" to the average eye. My girlfriend liked yours the best because of that - I don't know which I like the best and I haven't kept a running total, so I don't even know who loses yet - but you lose creativity points due to it just being a picture, from somewhere with a great job in the one glass of the glasses... and only because the other guys MADE mountains, and created their whole thing as a reflection of their dreams in the sky, so by comparison even with the coolness you get an 8/10 here.
Average:8.75

So Coxy is out, and I'm heart broken and I made it as professionally judged as possible, weighing everything I could. Thank you for your hard work and awesome sigs Coxy. You will win one of these, and soon I'm sure.

Aw shucks - thanks, although i really don't deserve it

OT: .... err... Rhy - did you really make that background thing yourself? :O

Yep sure did. It was created in Terragen, using various heightmaps and layering with fractals to obtain the right look. There is no way I could have achieved this using normal Photoshop overlayering.

Here is the original (which I prefer but couldn't use)

In all honesty, without you trawling through google or any other pic search engine you can think of, you won't find it, becuase it doesn't exist!

Well.. as you can see, I've adopted it!!!! And I'm kinda fussy about what I use!

Pro's

Colour range is absolutely spot on - love it
Text effect is great
Like the grittyness (if that's a word!)
Good tonal use throughtout
Depth of contrast is fantastic
Love the textured edging
Like the semi-translucent (Sheeps skull?) effect.
Gotta have points for including the Balrog.
More points for keeping it fairly simple!

Con's

The bubbles effect on the left looks a little out of place
The translucent effect behond the Balrog head is .. erm.. what is it?
The Balrog itself is a magnificant ancient demon and it just seems a little understated.
The "Warrior" font just looks a little "slapped on" rather than being integrated into the rest, like the rest of the sig font.
No real inclusion of Celtic theme..

Overall (although I can't score it for obvious reasons) I would mark this very very highly.

Superb work and thank you so much for doing it.

Still having problems with yours!! XD

I'm glad you like most of it! I really couldn't find a fantastic Balrog picture, and this is the best I could find. I wanted it to seem like he was coming out of the darkness. I personally like the bubbles on the side, but I had a feeling you would either think they were very artsy, or a failure *shrugs*
And as for the warrior, I tried to do the same effect as your actual name on it, but you couldn't see it so I had to make it drop a shadow...

Can't wait to see what you come up with! And I am HONORED you actually put it as your main sig!

Ok so judging.......... will be at the END! Part two can commence though:

Ok, you think part one was hard? Part 2 - You make NEW versions of the sigs made in round 1. Only this time, you remake the sigs made by each other.

So graham will be remaking this:
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/richergraphics/SIGNATURE-STRIP-500x250-GrahamLif.png

And Rhy you will remake this one:
http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/rr198/Grahamstyl3/Rhyfelwr.gif

Only do it in your style, with everything in your arsenal, and take your time - no deadline... this is IT. Winner gets a sticker of his choice, controlling interest of the Sig Contest Dynasty (runs v5), and there's a special surprise for Graham when this is all done.

Good luck guys, it has been an honor running this contest with you all. (you too coxy if you're reading this! but not you yarbone, because you didn't even make a single sig! Jerk!)

Oh my goodness a special prize for ME?! Oh boy! And Rhy! I better put this as my default sig IMMEDIATELY! I will edit this after that and give pros and cons!

EDIT:

Pros:
-You got the colors SPOT ON! Great work on that!
-Sunburst! Ahh! Love it!
-Incorporation of the Canon (I think you put T1i) lens, nicely done.
-I love how there is just one segment of 'realistic' lens and the rest is gritty with a drawn-in feel

Cons:
-Ahhh... Hmmm... I don't want to sound mean, but I don't like pictures of myself in actual sigs. Sorry! I should have told you
-Is the second circular metal piece supposed to be the inside of the camera? I can't really tell.. :/
-I wish the writing was just a LITTLE more legible in the gritty parts of the lens. I can read most of it, just the "T1is"

Overall great job! Hmmm question for Lucky---

Do we start from scratch or do we have to use the sig the other person actually made and edit it from there?

Glad you like it.. shame about the portrait - as you said, I didn't know otherwise I would have used my other background I was going to use..

Yeah the size does look quite overpowering but it is within the rules size (500x250 if pop-out).

I know what you mean about the type on the lens being hard to read. I originally had all the lens with out any effect, but it looked too stark against the styled background so I added part of the lens ina similar style.

Yeah, the second circular part is the camera mounting plate for the lens, where you can see the light capture plate .. and other stuff!

Very interesting twist from Lucky - didn't see that one coming.

Should we send each other the original layered files? .psd suit you?

Oh and I hope I didn't offend Yarbone - I was just messing with him because he missed the first deadline.

NOW....... This deserves some messing with for the following reasons:

Yarbone makes sigs daily, and has no reason to miss a deadline when he was PMed about it the day before/of/given a day to get one in

Yarbone has participated in Sig Contest before.

Actually, Yarbone has WON sig contest before...

Actually, Yarbone has RAN SIG CONTEST BEFORE and used to bug people every week to get their sigs in and not miss the deadline...

ANNNNNND, he did it the FIRST week.

SO no I don't hate you - you're still one of my favorite people, but come on! I have to joke with you after all that.

EDIT Sun 2/7

I am really having problems with this!!

I can find good Balrog images and make a decent enough sig, but all I'm doing is using existing googled images...

I've decided to take a plunge and download/learn ZBrush. No, I've never used it before, but I want to see if I can create a 3D Balrog head that can then be imported into my rendering software to get the lighting right..

This may take a while!!!!!

I have now finally finished my entry - sorry for the delay...

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/richergraphics/SIGNATURE-STRIP-Balrog.png

As I put in my entry post, I had to use err... 1,2,3 programs for this to create the Balrog from scratch.

I've posted a few screenshots in this album (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/album.php?albumid=612) if anyone wants to see the development. Not very interesting I'm afraid!! LOL

After all that time, I'm not sure if I like it and I'm pretty sure Graham is going to wipe the floor with me...

oh well, it was fun while it lasted!

Hope everyone likes it. As usual, feedback is most welcome.

@Graham - that;s really good, and you HAD to get the bubbles/circles in around the edges in one of your sigs didnt you? lol nice work 2009-08-04 01:13:00

Ok going in alphabetical order:

Graham: First Sig:
10/10 for text. Far and away the best of the competition. You nailed Rhy down and captured what he wanted with an amazing style.
I love how you use that torn page drop shadow ? much like the telephone pole sig a few weeks back. It works well? an idea for the future ? and write this down because you will thank me? Take that AWESOME effect of the torn page look with the drop shadow? and then have the main focus render of the sig POP out over the torn page border, it would look 3d like it's popping out of the screen! Man I?m going to make a sig like that now? haha.

Ok I love the circles! I really do like abstract never before done tricks and risks. You obviously know by now most want that same type of drop shadow effect so that they blend in with the rest of the sig. I disagree whole heartedly, and instead argue they needed the texture of the brush work to blend in? and then you could have RAISED them off the page with the drop shadow OUTSIDE instead of inside, making them look like they were torn out of the sig and are laying out to the side.

I give this sig overall 9.5/10 with the .5 from the slightly odd look of the circles no QUITE connecting with the rest of the sig, and the bolrog needed a bit more contrast, if even just some glow in the eyes ? just something since it's a bit too dark.

Second Sig:
Low and behold the circles are back. And no I didn?t write the above feedback today ? it was a while ago and how AWESOME is it that you raised the circles off the screen like they are drops coming off the rest of the sig, and I SOO called that last sig. Haha. Moving on.
Colors: 10/10, beautiful.
Creativity: Fluid flow, stark contrasting non fluid render. Awesome lighting effects, 10/10
Text: 10/10? the tribute to your avatar and classic ?GrahamLif3? with more color and splatter brush, plus the faint text of subject matter and foregn characters was epic EPIC win.
Ok, I love this sig to death, top to bottom, the light rays coming out to the right are awesome ? could have used maybe a few more through the middle?. Splatter brush here and there for good measure works really well.
Overall 9.9/10 because I always give room for improvement, I don't give perfect scores.

more to follow, when I'm done typing it up.

Rhy?s turn:
Great work here, with tons and tons of effort put into each aspect. I love the sunburst effect, and especially how you cut it off to the left in the typical sig rectangular shape? paralleling the overall shape of the sig. Beautiful touch there. The exploded view of the camera is amazing as well, making for a great cetral focal point as well as nailing graham?s hobby.
Speaking of graham, you threw HIM in there, and really worked the colors through out. I love the simple tight fitting border.
I?m not a fan of the blotchy texture, but it doesn?t really look bad ? just not my thing. The text is awesome, and gets nailed with the curving around the lense. But you could have copied it and pasted it on top of itself, blurring the back one and making it darker to mimic the existing text on the lense exactly.
Little room for improvement here: 9.45/10
Edge goes to Graham in round 1

2nd Sig:
Epic win. You got in the torn page edges, and ANOTHER border on top of that just for the heck of it. I looks great ? think about using texture on those gradient borders you?ve been making like the resident evil one you did, just some canvas texturing would do wonders for the complexity of the border itself.
There is no need to point out the complexity of the rest of this sig. The hand crafted Balrog looks so professional, I CAN?T believe you made it from scratch. The gradient light from the mouth could use a faint texture overlay, maybe a fire texture here. But seriously amazing job there.
I love the text, it glows, like cryptic unholy writing that I shouldn?t be reading for fear of this thing in your sig coming and eating me.
The texture of the background is awesome ? reminds me of the walls in the later stages of Doom 3? and I really appreciate the work you put into this ? for example the lava like texture masked over the balrog?s horns, then the fire work coming off of it? as well as how that same firey texture was carefully pulled around his mouth and jaw as well.
Overall, this is just awesome?
9.95/10
Rhy gets the nod here, this is ridiculous ? winner to follow?

OMG Graham - you rock!!!!

Serious improvement on mine and I feel that, after reading Lucky's first write up, I am so out - how on earth can I beat that!!!

Icey thinks its seriously good and she should know, because she is seriously good at knowing what's seriously good!!!

Before the final write up, I can honestly say I've thouroughly enjoyed this competition and am so honoured to be competing with some extremely talented artists here.

Thank you to everyone who took part.

Rhy

AND THE WINNER IS...

Rhyfelwr

The last round could not be closer, it was basically a tie - and the tie breaker was the shear amount of original work Rhy put into his, literally creating the whole thing on his own - that intangible won him the contest.

Congratulations - Sig Contest V4 Champion, Rhyfelwr.
Now pick out a sticker here (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/xperience.php?go=shop&cat=4) and let me know which one it is... take your time to come up with some categories and rules, and start V5 so Maiden has something to do and Coxy can get some redemption.

As for that second place guy...

Graham, this was going to happen wether you won or lost - this was the extra something I had for you previously mentioned...

On behalf of me and Maiden and Rhy and yarbone, and moleynator - we would love you to join the Sig Exchange Crew. (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13522) You will get an invite momentarily to the social group, and will be added to the list of artists should you accept of course.

This was awesome, and I hope you guys enjoyed my help/opinion/format as much as I enjoyed your artistry, originality, and hard work. Thank you guys so much - and oh man I am scared to enter the next one.

PS - PLAY DEJA BOOM! RIGHT NOW, muah ha ha - shameless self promotion. But seriously, this is what I worked on while you guys worked on sigs, and is worth the play - check sig for details, and no flaming me for plugging my level!

Congrats to Rhy, condolences to you Graham, but hey, you can be a sig exchange guy now!

Good job to both of you, some amazing sigs, and to everyone else who competed, hope you all try again next time

Now Rhy, no time to celebrate, your turn to make and judge the sig comp

Haha yeah when I first read it I like "Oh my gosh I WON!" but I guess not. I guess I had my hopes a little high since Lucky considered TWO of my sigs to be "the best of the competition"

schucks, I guess next time I will have to find the money to buy fancy 3D-making software so I can truly compete with Rhyfelwr.

Wow...just read all this from the beginning. This contest was beyond awesome. Ending was so tense. Sorry Rhy, but I was rooting for Graham at the end. I liked the abstractness of his better for the balrog. I'm a huge fan of simple and abstract and your balrog was a little to much. But, if overall in the competition, I agree with you winning. This was way to close. I think it stressed everyone out haha.2009-08-04 04:27:00

Congratulations to both of you finalists - very good sigs. Of course Rhy steals the limelight, but don't forget how close this one was!
I couldn't call it between you two - the quality was ridiculous in the final (and dare I say also in the semi-final with me )
I'll be ready for V5.0! Time for me to get some payback.

Now it's over, I have to say congrats to Rhy! And congrats to Graham for getting into the exchange! You both did exceptionally awesomely well. So...woo!

Yeah, that's all.

Just logged on for the first time since seeing the result at stupid-o-clock this morning. I wanted time to calm down and post a reply that made some sense...

oh.. hang on..bit more coming out...

WAAAHHAAYYYYYY!! OMG I WON!!!!!!! AAAARRRGGGGHHHH *jumps around a lot waving my arms ridiculously in the air*.

.... OK calmed down again now..

I do feel a little speechless (or textless if thats a word), because in the end, I truly feel that were both evenly matched.

I suppose in the end, Lucky had an impossible task which I didn't envy (Oh god, its my turn next!) and he had to go either way on a knife edge. I felt that his marking was very fair and, on marks alone, we were indeed equal.

Its interesting that earlier in the week, after using standard googled Balrog images, I did feel that it would be too easy and might get critisized for not being original... hence the work on creating it from scratch (That soooo took longer than I wanted it to!). From what lucky said, I guess that was what tipped it, but artistically, I thought it was a head-to-head.

Graham.. my comiserations to you.. you were an awsome competitor and I worry about having to compete against you in the future!

Lucky - I have to say that this contest was superbly hosted. It was well thought out, well constructed, well maintained and brilliantly written up. I think that my efforts in V5 will mimic many of your ideas I'm afraid! Congratulations for guiding a truly tense and exciting comp!

I'll PM you about a sticker choice, but really, it was about taking part and I really enjoyed it.

As a mark of respect to Graham, I would like to donate the same choice of a sticker to you.. you really deserve it and I don't feel right taking all the glory.

BTW, all of the software I use is free (err Photoshop...not so free). The last package I used was ZBrush (in addition to DAZ STudio), which I learned in 3 days on 30 day trial... so anyone can achieve these results without breaking the bank.

To all the other competitors.. you were all awsome!! I feel that there is going to be some SERIOUS competition in V5, judging the feedback I've read!!

I'll be working on the format for V5 tonight, so certain individuals *ahem* won't have to wait long before getting stuck in!

Again... thanks...so much

Rhy
