The Cave!!! A subterranian adventure.

Archive: 14 posts

My latest level, my next one is already out-doing it by leaps and bounds but this is still a treat i suppose. You fly around (no jetpack) with a bat who helps you get out of the cave you have now found yourself in. As you go deeper you meet some other locals around the cave and a good old fashion jumping cart sequence. It was done mostly with the monster pack, attention to detail was my goal to make a pretty memorable setting as well as different play mechanics.

At least those were my intentions , so without further ado I await your responses.

It's simply titled "The Cave" but your better off looking for my psn which is
V V a I d o no spaces

just a warning the second half of the level is punishingly hard but it is doable you might want to read the speech bubbles

sidenote: Also if you love space ships I have another level set in a quasi-desert punk/ sky punk style where all the inhabitants of the world live either really high or above the clouds, but I'm in the process of upgrading it so no showcase as of now.

+ The level started out really well. Nice visual elements and all of the strange lighting really fit the level very well.

+ Then I got in the bat guy and he flew really well too. I was really enjoying the level and liking this idea of switching back and forth between regular platforming sections and then flying sections.

+ The flying bad controlled really well, much better than most other flying type contraptions I have seen in LBP. It was very easy to control where I was going right from the very start.

- Now for the bad part ... Once I made it to the gas caves section the level became much too frustrating for me to finish. The gas is black and blends in with the black background so I have no way of knowing where the gas is and just died unfairly several times because I ran into gas that I had no way of knowing was there.

- The other problem was that it was a long section with no saves. I managed to get kinda far into the section and past the flying guys attached to that winch ... however I just ended up running into some more gas that was completely invisible and quit when I had to start over from the beginning.

+ The level started out really fun and I think it's a great idea for a level that is working extremely well, but once you get to the gas section it just gets unfairly difficult. Still gave it a 4 star for the idea and hopes that you will re-think that section of the level. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this level though and any updates that you make to it because I really would like to be able to see and finish what more the level has to offer.

Recap:
+ Great idea for the level, which is implemented really well.
+ Nice visuals and lighting.
- Unfairly difficult when you are killed by things which you can't see.

thanks for the tips. It does make sense now, I have my gamma settings on my tv set for killzone two since the game is so dark so that's probably why the smoke can't be seen. I know the perfect fix for it. I did say the second half is punishingly hard but that was the last part of the first lol I'll have the fix done by tomorrow if I don't its probably because of my new level which is well... it's something for all you epic action movie fans, especially matrix fans 2009-06-23 05:50:00

Very nice level you got here and also a challenge. The bat thing with the balloon was AWESOME and so were the mine rides. The mine rides were extremely difficult and I think it's mainly because the score bubbles were usually in the way. I suggest you make the string a little shorter on all of them. I gave it 5 stars because it's rated 3 for some strange reason but I really would've gave it a 4. Good job!2009-06-24 04:24:00

Alright I've done the following tweaks

-raised the bubbles so that they don't interfere with the cart
- made the gas in the gas caves blue for better visibility

Hope that makes it a little easier I'll probably mess with the jumping mines later but I was going for hard

I tried to play your Cave level with a friend, but the bat doesn't seem to function with two people. I left him to die so I could try to play through the level. The bat told me about a slime tree, and then it suddenly said good job and left, although I hadn't done anything with the slime tree. The gate on the bat opened and closed, seemingly at random, and sometimes stuff shot out, though I do not know why.2009-06-25 02:35:00

The level is made intentionally for 1 player It's extremely difficult and nearly impractical to make a free flying vehicle that can support several sack people and still be that compact.

The bat told me about a slime tree, and then it suddenly said good job and left, although I hadn't done anything with the slime tree...and sometimes stuff shot out, though I do not know why.

The top of the cabin is a grab switch that shoots small missiles that I must admit blend well in well with the environment, the slime tree is the large spongy material with tentacles all around it so you must have destroyed it and not noticed it.

The gate on the bat opened and closed, seemingly at random,

That is a strange predicament I have it set so that the gates only open near checkpoints or areas of progress I'll have to look into it

Okay, played through the level again just now and was able to finish it this time C:

+ The different color gas helped out that section a ton. It was still a little difficult to get all the way through it but it no longer felt unfair.

- And you were right about those mine carts being tough as well. The main problem that I had with them was the the first one you use, the one that can jump, it kept getting caught on all of the score bubbles. Is there any way that you could switch them to a different layer so they don't interfere with the cart?

+ After the first cart, the next one felt like a walk in the park.

+ I also noticed this time through all of the reflection effects you were getting form the glass in the bg which were really cool.

Wow I didn't even think to do that . Alright you can count on that being the next fix it should be done in 10 minutes lol

and grats on getting in cool levels

EDIT: Alright Bubbles are now in a new layer AND I added some camera zones that show overlook the gas so your not blindsided

Also I just finished my design for my new level and I'll be looking for beta testers. refer to this thread

soooo i'm just gonna leave something here for you!!

+ First impression was good... just the monster kit decoration on the starting point looks awesome xD
+ I liked the branches atached to ropes.
+ Lightning is cool, and all the bright colors
+ Nice use of monster kit. escpecially the material on front layer looks really good.
+ Flying with monster zeppelin is good.
+ Jumping cart seemed frustrating at first but you just got to know what to do, what turned out to be really fun
+ the slow cart was pretty awesome too

- Shooting with monster zeppelin is a bit too slow. Makes it hard to shoot while you still want to stay up.
- 2nd Geyser was hidden behind orange roots. i think you should've made it visible (IMO)
- the gass tunnel was very frustrating, wich made me restart the level twice >_<

And one wheel of the tram broke :/

overall pretty good!!

hi vvaldo,
just tried to finish this level, but didn't succeeded, still some feedback

* that flying creature is pretty cool! most of them are frustrating but your is pretty controlable.
* the combination of the flying creature and the platforming is really cool!
* the jump-lift takes pretty long to launch, after that comes a part were you have to grab something on the 2nd layer while there is something else on the front layer. I got stuck at that part, had to kill myself. It's hard to see what exactly you've got to do there
* the minecart-race... well, i never got past that part That's really hard man, i think i tried about 20 times but it seems really hard to keep your speed there (maybe a camera zoomed out wouldn't be a bad idea either, because i didn't really know where to go at first because you can't really see the minecart)

Alright new update, I took yarbone's opinion and did a slight aesthetic change so the orange root doesn't conceal the second geyser. And I sped up their launch times by 30%.

Misty did you use the track switches? There are only two jumps, then again they are hard as well I may lengthen the track on those parts to be more forgivable

Couldn't finish. First, I had trouble with the flying machine. I frequently popped the score bubble that kept it anchored to the rock, without actually boarding. Once the machine was in the air, though, the flight was fairly effortless, but the shooting was kind of hit-and-miss...took me a while to decide to just hold down R1.

The platforming was pretty solid. I put a lot less stuff in the foreground on my levels (visibility), but that's a taste thing. Your foreground choices didn't interfere overmuch with gameplay.

I hit the wall, though, on the jumping minecart. I could not reliably control the thing. I understood after a few tries that it was a hold-for-power thruster. My problems involved mostly either the thruster failing to fire, or my popping a wheelie that I could not then recover from in time to make the next jump. I can't gauge how much time I spent, but I died about twenty times on the mine carts trying to make them work.

And that's the point I'd probably end on: I WANT the mine cart to jump right. It's an awesome idea. But I couldn't really say how much of it is simply my lacking skill, and how much is something I would recommend changing. And if I did recommend a change, the only fix I could recommend would be more, but smaller/less thrust rockets, since I seemed to jump nose first.
