My new artistic level. (easy to read text wall)

Archive: 6 posts

Hey guys! Sectioned Text wall ahead

The Enticer!
My current project is all about an artist caught in a world of his own creations. Trapped in there by one of his more malevolent drawings!
You stumble across his sketchbook and are suddenly thrust into his world and must help 'The Artist' defeat this creation.

My Aim!
I have several aims:
- :star::star::star::star::star: That right, i want a five star level, i believe i have the capability to do so and .... I wanna be popular

- The level, i hope, will entirely look completly different to anything out there and be that something 'different' that pushes me to a 5. I aim to do this by using an Eyetoy camera i will be recieveing in a couple of days to make my whole world's stickers from scratch from which i'll be drawing on paper (and possibly photoshoping to get the right look) and hope to keep that feel within the game (A drawing book of sorts).
(this would depend on how well the eyetoy does it's job)

- Make easy yet fun style mechanics/platforms/bosses that everyone should enjoy.

- To have prize bubbles in my level (much like story modes where you have to work for them) with useful and i stress useful objects and stickers i've produced from that level.

Things i need from you guys!

- I'm terrible at thinking of level names, the level revolves around a captured artist and will likely pan across several 2-3 levels, my best thought so far is 'The Artist's World'
Any advice on this would be appreciated.

- I'd like to find out what people like in a level that makes them happy,
New gameplay mechanic, optional x2 zones, some basic platformin?
Anything YOU like , I'd like to know

- I would like to know whether people would appreciated the prize bubbles or do people think they get in the way?

Some of the first level has already been created and awaits eyetoy-rification, so dont worry guys this isnt a far-fetched scheme of an idea, i am fully committed to this!

- Depends what you mean by a 5 star level? 5 stars in your eyes? Our eyes? Or to achieve a 5 star rating from the community? With a few exceptions, getting 5 stars is more about knowing how to use the system and less about the quality of your level.

- The Eyetoy isn`t great. I`d also say that there`s more to a level than unique stickers. Relying on a gimmick to carry your level isn`t a great idea. Not saying that you are doing this of course, but the impression I get from what you wrote is that you`re hoping that having stickers that no-one else does will impress people.

- Can`t help you with a name. If you stick a thread in the 'help' section, you should get plenty of suggestions though.

- Not in the least bit interested in prize bubbles tbh. They tend to clog up files with useless stuff (even if it`s useful, chances are folk could just make it themselves). However the kids like them, and I have the collection option turned off so knock yourself out!

- For me platforming is the big thing. It`s all very good making things look pretty or having a cool premise (which you seem to have), but it should really be backed up with some platforming. It is a platform game after all. Doesn`t need to be completely new just as long as it`s well made.

And good luck.

Give me at least one original obstacle/enemy, good platforming, and good visuals and you'll get get at least 4 stars from me.2009-06-24 20:15:00

Its funny, this makes me think a lot of Animator vs Animation xD
Anyway, If you pull this off It definatley sounds like 5* material, I would definatley be interested in playing it ^^
I'd say good platforming and interesting enemies (not complex, but not the standard jump on the obvious brain by avoiding some little weapon)
What did you have in mind by the new mechanic?

The levels coming along nicely, it's almost finished about 70% done.
I think i've got the accounted for:

-Platforming
-Visuals
-Some short storyline ( i know people dont like too much)
-i have an Original enemy at the end but he's a one off end enemy not a small common one. (no other enemies in the level at the minute, i may put some more in but as Fish stated, i dont want them to be basic dodge the weapon an hit the brain, since they're always easy.)
-A x2 puzzle for you friendlies.

I might post up some screenshots soon, to help with your visual interpretation.
But i will be creating a F4F post when it's done. I can PM you guys that seem interested if you'd like.

Thanks again Black-Toof

Hi BlackToof. I'll itemize my thoughts for clarity.

1. Screenshots would definitely be helpful
2. In a poll done at this site recently, those voting selected the following, in order of priority, these as the Top 2 things they like in a level (keep in mind most of those voting are creators, but it is useful information). If you keep both of these at the forefront when creating the level, you have a good chance of reaching 4 to 5 star ratings.
A. Visuals
B. Platforming
3. Personally, I put mulitplayer challenges in my levels (one level being published). I want to cater to as much of the LBP market as possible, and I think they benefit a level.
4. Unique is always good, but make sure they are well made objects, with all the little intricate details that will make them more interesting
5. To ensure the story line is not boring, the Artists creation that has him trapped, must be exceptional, since it will be a recurring piece of the level.
6. As for Title, like Matt said, you could probably get more input for that in a Help thread. But I'll throw one out there for you anyway..."The Vault".

I hope some of this has been useful. Good luck, and let me know when it's published.
