Low resolution stickers??

Archive: 10 posts

Has anyone else noticed that occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, a sticker on your level will be at a really low resolution and will be visibly much less sharp than other stickers in your level?

It's happened to me more and more lately, most recently in my Jumping Castle level (you can see it along the roof of the castle, where the brickwork is less sharp than the brickwork along the sides).

Anyone else had this problem, or is it just me?

I have had that problem i think its just problem with loading because if you wait a few minutes they are back to normal. I don't know whether it will help but it did for me save the level thenquit the game and put it back on.

Hopefully it wil be back to normal.

i dont think i've had the exact problem,

i have noticed that when i have stuck an own made sticker down when next i go into where i stuck it it'll be lowest resolution and will build itself up to good resolution.

(based on the pod here)

had that problem as well

(i'm not really sure, and i can't test it at the moment)
but doens't the resolution of your sticker depends on how big the surface is you sticker it on?

Try putting a sticker on a small background and on a large background, (sticker should be tesame size) do they look tesame?

Sounds like progressive encoding JPEGs to me. Could very well be a deliberate design decision by MM. With progressive encoding you get a low-res display during loading then it goes up to high res once fully loaded. This is preferable (often) to dispalying nothing during loading, then high res after loading. Of course there could be an issue where it never actually loads the high res fully, so you get stuck with low res.

Is this with custom stickers you've taken with the camera? If so, you can probably export them to your PC and find out if they are encoded in this way.

The stickers in question are actually the MM-made stickers, not custom ones, I could understand if it happened with custom stickers but it seems so strange to me that it happens with just the normal stickers.

I do think it's a case of the game loading a low-res sticker first, and then after a while replacing it with a higher resolution one, but the problem is that in a few cases I've noticed that the sticker never actually gets any sharper as you'd expect.

I might play around with the stickers and see if I can find a trick which forces the game to make the sticker higher resolution, I think that maybe returning to the pod a couple of times might do the trick.

This is happening since forever for me. Is your level near top thermo? It seems to happen in busy levels for me.

I don't know if it's related to this but the game is having a dynamic adjustment feature for limiting slowdown and problems if you play online. Basically, the game intelligently dimishes the graphic load when needed and down to a certain limit before actually slowing down. This is why you'll see the fire effects or other things like that disappear momentarily in certain busy situations. I've also seen lighting effects and stickers also being affected by this feature in some levels.

I think you're right, Ranger, it's happening because my level is too busy and there's just too much on the screen at once. Even though the thermo is only at about 75%, my whole level takes place on a single screen so it would make sense that the graphics are being downgraded to accommodate everything that's happening.2009-06-22 17:56:00

It makes sense there could be a couple of valid scenarios for this issue.

Referring to rtm's comment, I've noticed in the level I'm currently creating, that there is progressive encoding, but it's mainly noticeable on the very large stickers. Not only is the res. low initially, the surface area is not fully covered as well, and as the data is processed, the sticker will begin to cover the entire stickered surface a section at a time, with increasing resolution through each iteration.

It also makes sense, in a busy level so to speak, that the more critical data is processed first, such as solid objects, with stickers being low man on the totem pole.
