Floating platforms?

Archive: 25 posts

Every video I see has the platforms affected by physics when you create them. Is it possible to create floating platforms, because I don't remember seeing any so far.2008-09-04 03:40:00

not "floating" but there is "dark matter" witch allows you to place other objects on top of it while it does not affect the sackboys... it looks like the platorms are floating but they are on the dark matter.

Awesome. I was seriously getting worried that they had never shown floating stuff. Thanks! It's nice to know this board is so fast.2008-09-04 03:48:00

lol welcome i guess...

you can also just place a thin board and glue the platforms onto it...

My idea was a background layer at the back and gluing floating platforms to that, is that the same? Still, should work okay. I think.2008-09-04 13:41:00

Use dark matter, it's the one thing in the game that isn't affected by grvity.2008-09-04 13:50:00

Another clarification here, Darkmatter is glue that you can stick to the background (Without using a board) So yes, it will be floating.2008-09-04 16:07:00

But will it be like a Mario level where you can use them to jump off. Like it would be cool to make that Mario level where it is just all platforms and when you jump on them the fall off. But from what I have seen it seems like this can be done.2008-09-04 16:53:00

It CAN be done, its just that they very rarely have used dark matter in the story mode levels.

Ya this looks like it can be done I just hope theres a way you can make platforms float up and down or left to right... Thats a big part of my level designs, good old mercilessly moving platforms.

I dont think its possible but I would love to recreate Super Mario Bros 3 Level 7-2(I think?). You know the one where you have to jump on the arrowed platform and keep jumping to change the direction of it and guide it up the level. But theres pipes constantly in the way and the platform dissapears after about 10-15 seconds and you have to keep jumping from one to the other dodging goombas, turtles, those stupid plant things coming in and out of the pipe and praying to god you dont miss the platform and plummet all the way to the beginning. That level was so annoyingly hard when I was a kid it was awesome I cant wait to torture people with something similar:hero:

You can, but you'll have to use pistons I guess. I'm not sure if you could make those invisible or not though.

Anyone know if Dark Matter can be affected by thrusters?2008-09-04 17:31:00

Yeah I loved that level and also the one where you turned all the rocks to gold coins was also fun. I hope things like this can be done, it would be totally fun to do stuff like that. Well the least thing you can do is fake it so it makes something close to it.2008-09-04 17:44:00

I suppose but wouldnt that only work if its up/down or left/right? In SMB3 its up/left/right. I dont think the physics engine would allow it but hopefully I'm wrong. Unless I do it with rockets I need answers to these questions why cant this game be out already lol

I can think of a way that would work for you . You'd have to have both the pistons on moveable platforms, and time it so as one pushes up, the sideways one pushes and the vertical one stops.2008-09-04 17:56:00

Hmmm I think your on to something. I'm sure it'll be one of those things thats much easier said then done but still its in the realm of possibility so thats always a plus. Just 6 and a half more weeks

LOL. I can imagin but me and you just brainstormed an idea for how to get this to work in about 20 min... I wonder how long it would take for us to actually make it work in the game... just thinking about it hurts my head lol

I reckon I could make a working one in about 20 mins tbh I've got it in my head how to work it, just can't explain it too clearly 2008-09-04 19:02:00

After watching the video from QORE, I noticed that they had these blocks moving around a circle and you jumped in between them to move around. the circle. They were floating, so I am thinking this is possible. Either they were connected to a wheel and all this was invisible which is possilbe. But it should give you some more hope that you can create some invisilbe blocks. I think it is very possible to do what you want.2008-09-05 16:27:00
