Play Create Share: A New Meta-Genre?

Archive: 17 posts

At the present, we as gamers are acclimated to playing what I will call Version 1.0 games. These are entirely created by developers with no customization of gameplay. I see these types of games to be very limiting, as I love the ability to be able to Play, Create, AND Share gameplay content, not just play.

LittleBigPlanet, obviously, is the first Play Create Share (PCS) game. Specifically, it is a Platformer PCS. Mod Nation Racer will be the second PSC to come out: a Racing PCS.

I see great potential for PSCs and I really think they will revolutionize how games are thought of. No longer will gamers idly sit and play the work of others, they now have the power of creation in their own hands!

In this thread, I would like to think of potential genres the Play Create Share aspect can be brought to.

For example, think of a MMORPG PSC in which players can:

Play: Play online in vast 3D content-rich worlds with their friends and complete quests and socialize.

Create: Create their own worlds, quests, characters, items, weapons, ect.

Share: Share their worlds with others on a wide server called the Universe!

I call "Play Create Share" a Meta-Genre because it is above the genre level - as it can be applied to many different genres!

What do YOU think? :arg:

I don't think LBP is the first PCS game. G-mod for one, and that's quite recent.

I do think that there should be more games in this "meta-genre". It's such a fun, long-lasting experience ^^.

Yeah i wouldn't say LBP was the first PCS game, it's just the first mainstream one i think

After hearing about Modnation and a few others i think we'll be seeing a lot more customisable games

Hopefully LBP was just setting the standard

Under Siege is an RTS that will use the PCS tag. It will feature a full blown editor with props, water, cutscences and triggers.2009-06-20 23:08:00

I just think that this industry and their PR people do love buzz words. "PCS" might just be a new term coined (or not) but really is just blabla.

Games are having editors since forever on the PC world.

An MMO would be sweet, but I think a shooter would be even cooler.2009-06-21 00:13:00

Wow, yeah, in a shooter you could create maps, guns, vehicles, objectives, enemies, characters, civilians (that you don't shoot), game (hunting games, or just for fun ), ect and share them all online, and generally engage in massive online custom warfare!

Imagine a PCS GTA type game!

I'd love a PCS shooter! I think this PCS thing is one of the greatest things to ever happen to video games, I really hope there will be a lot more of these.2009-06-21 00:35:00

Even without any gameplay elements i'd love a game that i could spend a lot of time designing my own city or fantasy world

I have the tools to do that on my pc but i have no idea how to use them

As of now, Play Create Share is a single game. What Sony wants to do is turn it into a full-blown genre and make it a fully mainstream one at that. I whole-heartedly support this, as I think the world does need more games that aren't made by the developers, but rather are made by the players. I think that the genre should be expanded to be anything where players work together. In LittleBigPlanet, when someone publishes a good level, they benefit everyone who plays it. The same thing would go for ModNation Racers, and even Noby Noby Boy, in which all players are working towards a common goal. Any game that encompasses all of its players into one "planet" is a good one in my book.2009-06-22 00:41:00

I must confess, I would love more games like LBP. I really hope this comes full circle. ... Though I somehow doubt it will 2009-06-22 01:36:00

Other than ModNation Racers, I don't really see any new Play Create Share-styled games on the horizon. Of course, it would be really nice to see a new game of the same type revealed, whether it be at the next E3 (a long way away), or at some other point down the road.

Is "play create share" a trademark of Sony? IDK, but if it is then I really resent the idea of it being a called a "genre".

And yeah, there have been "play, create, share" games long before LBP, they just weren't called that. Anything with a map editor, or customisable skins qualifies, assuming you can upload them or transmit them somehow / somewhere. Of course they weren't as in-depth as LBP, but that's like saying there never used to be games before 7th gen consoles, because they weren't as in depth as the new games...

Joe Danger is a PCS game that's coming out for PSN and XBLA. It's like exciteike sort of.
Also, the downloadable title Gravity Crash on PSN has a pretty robust level creator.
