Need Calvin & Hobbes level ideas :o
Archive: 14 posts
I have decided to create an easy level (to counter my hard ones ) based on Calvin & Hobbes. So far it starts off with a C+H costume tutorial, a wagon ride down the hill, and crossing a log over a stream by foot. I want to try to split the level into seasons, at the moment I have autumn > winter. I plan on making some snow sculptures, and maybe a paintball/snowball fight with suzie? I have a collectable/feedback(#collected) system set up, so I thought I would hide some collectable items that give the user more points. But I'm not sure what that collectable item could be.. So, any ideas on the collectable or other ideas/mechanics? | 2009-06-20 10:45:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
Maybe a daydream sequence with Spaceman Spiff and/or Stupendous Man? Or something using a cardboard box? Some of his many uses of cardboard boxes include: Transmogrifier - poised upside down, you crawl underneath. (This device was later reinvented by Calvin as a hand-held unit.) Flying time machine - right side up, you climb in. Duplicator (with ethicator enhancement) - turned on its side. In one instance, an "ethicator" was added to create a duplicate of only Calvin's good side. Atomic Cerebral Enhance-O-Tron - hooked up to a pasta strainer. Emergency G.R.O.S.S. meeting "box of secrecy"[42] - also upside down, only seen once. A costume of a robot or "world's most powerful computer"[43] A stand for selling things, such as lemonade,[44] "Suicide Drink,"[45] "Calvin's Miracle Potion" quickly changed to "Calvin's Debilitating Disease Drink," "scientific names,"[46] "insurance" (from himself),[47] "a swift kick in the butt,"[48] "candid opinions,"[49] "great ideas,"[50] "life," and a "frank appraisal of your looks".[51] - turned upside down, however he sits in a chair behind it. | 2009-06-20 14:04:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |

Yeah, I was thinking of using that dissolve bg change for something like that. Like a bush dissolves into alien + backyard into desert) I thought about using the box for a new thing. Like maybe using that dissolve bg trick to make Calvin grow/shrink or something? Maybe I could just make a transition between areas of reality and imagination? I wish there was a costume change switch so I could change the user into the dino costume. Maybe emit a hollow dinosaur over the player somehow? | 2009-06-20 14:40:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
a game of calvinball maybe? Except that would confuse people Spaceman Spiff? idk. love the comics, look forward to a level | 2009-06-21 05:18:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |
I'd love to see the T-Rex he pretends to be or Hobbs stalking something like a "wild" tiger. Those bits always made me laugh. Spaceman Spiff would be a must though. | 2009-06-21 05:20:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |

I spent the good part of the day creating a spaceman spiff area. I think It's pretty cool. I still need to decorate it though. I need to make it more FUN. What kinds of things does the average player (ie. kid) like doing in LBP. Bouncy pads, score bubbles, etc? | 2009-06-21 09:42:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
How about you add a scene when Hobbes pounces on Calvin? Those parts always make me laugh. Calvinball, though, would work out. It'd be like a race from 1st to second (i.e. running through the woods, jumping over streams, swinging from trees). Perhaps a snowman scene, too. Make one of their heards fall off and the other gasp with shock. This is a really cool idea! My favorite comic strip is finally getting the LittleBIGPlanet treatment! This sounds awesome! I can't wait to see it! | 2009-06-22 00:24:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
you should make the part where they use the box to teleport to the past or some thing | 2009-06-22 02:20:00 Author: xtrememysterio Posts: 17 |
Being an older person I can't exactly say what younger players would like but I've noticed that the 9-14 year olds that I play LBP with tend to love bouncy stuff and swingy stuff. Jumping - not so much. They also REALLY love paintinators......*sigh* I'd leave that bit out if I were you unless you had a good reason - like it's spaceman spiff's ray gun or something. Bubbles are always good for kids. Big clusters of them - please only one or two run around to get them all ammounts though for us cranky adults who love bubbles but like game flow more didn't they have a tree house? I seem to recall a tree house - could be cool to have to bounce up to the tree house and swing inside then you could have cutouts of calvin & hobbs bouncing around the player too. Would be silly but fun. | 2009-06-22 07:34:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
Thanks for these suggestions, really helpful. I plan on making chainable bubbles through the level, with bonus points for collecting the hidden tuna cans. done: cardboard box costumes wagon log snowmen spaceman spiff safety poster counter + can opener logic gates to do (in proirity order): treehouse (w/bouncy bushes) t rex (not sure how to include this yet) pouncing hobbes / photo op bath / stupendous man escape silhouette comic calvin ball (can anyone think of a mechanic?) Thermometer is currently at 66% | 2009-06-22 11:00:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
well calvinball is just kind of random. i seem to recall that the rules were made up as it went along, ooh, and there was the penalty box song! basically, i think you could throw in whatever you wanted. | 2009-06-22 20:34:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |
