What kind of rater are you?

Archive: 33 posts

I'd like to know, how do people rate other peoples levels?

I personally rate levels on how they look and how much platforming and puzzles, and how good they are.

If the puzzles and platforming was well thought out and fun to play, i normally give them a :star::star::star::star:.
If I really enjoyed playing the game and just loved every moment of it, i normally give them a :star::star::star::star::star: and heart them and the aurther.

Even though the level itself wasn't as good, if it looks like they tried hard, i give them :star::star::star: for effort.

But if a level only has scenory and hardly any platforming at all i normally give them a :star::star: to :star::star::star: depending on how well the visauls look.

If the level is a H4H or a story/movie based level (with a bad story) i normally give them a :star:. I personally think it's not possible to make a story based game in LBP.

But thats how i perosonally rate levels how about you? How do you rate peoples levels!?

This sounds pretty similar to how I rate. I'm pretty stingy with my 5:star:2009-06-20 05:48:00

:star::star::star::star::star: = As good as it gets. Your level was not only beautiful and good level design but it was also fun and i'd even replay it. There's no major bugs and cheap death.

:star::star::star::star: = Your level is excellent and it showed that you spend alot of time making /tweaking it. It might have shortcomings like with the visuals or some level design that wasn't totally solid but it didn't interfered much with my fun.

:star::star::star: = It was good you now. I had fun but I could see there's something missing. I might have got stuck and encounter some cheap designs. Or maybe stuff wasn't ajusted right like the difficulty but all in all, I had fun in the mean that it was worth playing at least once.

:star::star: = Ok now this needs work. The level lacks. There's problems with level design, pretty much nothing is ajusted right. There might be cheap death, it's probably cheap visually too. All this stuff came directly affecting my fun and even to the point that I probably didn't bother reaching your scoreboard!

:star: = Crap level. Trophy level. H4H or any other really stupid ideas. Empty level and all those level that only contain craptacular stuff.

I'm quite generous with my ratings, 3-5 is usually my rating. Especially when I play this level everyone else played and rated it 4-5, but I didn't find it as appealing, I still rate it the same. 1-2 is reserved for levels I absolutely despise 2009-06-20 08:22:00

I think Ranger has pretty much hit it on the head. It's pretty simple like that. It also depends on my mood though, I often rate higher when I'm with friends 2009-06-20 09:32:00

Most of the time I just click through and leave feedback in the comments if I have anything to say.

I'm not afraid to give 4 or 5 star levels 2 stars if they really could be more polished.

:heart: = Only if I feel I may want to play again. Not necessarily hand-in-hand with 5 stars.

:star::star::star::star::star: - I have a hard time finding improvements. A single spelling or grammar mistake; a single glimpse of exposed, non-artistic dark matter; a particularly annoying / cheap / boring area of level; any of those and it's an automatic not-5-stars. I am very stingy with these.
Y'all on this forum seem to deserve them a lot though

:star::star::star::star: - Much better than average, but I can easily see areas to improve in - spelling/grammar, unartistic visible mechanics, annoying/boring elements, probably some more criteria.

:star::star::star: - I played the level. It was very much like a level. I might have quit halfway through. I can't be bothered to care. Didn't trigger my hate-reflexes, though, which is nice.

:star::star: - Shows promise, but lacks any sort of polish. I wouldn't play it again without serious improvements. I have played a very fun minigame level (I forget what it was; 'twas long ago) that got :star::star: for being such an eyesore that I couldn't complete it.

:star: - Filthy, disgusting, loathsome pile of pointless time-wasting idiocy. Scum of the little big Earth.

Heart - If I want to make sure others know about it.

:star::star::star::star::star: - Either a) it's an amazing, flawless experience, b) It's currently rated 2 or 3 and I don't think that's fair, c) I'm in a really good mood.
:star::star::star::star: - Either a) it's a great experience with some flaws, b) It's currently rated 2 or 3 and I don't think that's fair, c) It's currently rated 5 and I don't think that's fair.
:star::star::star: - Either a) It's ok, but not really that great, b) It's currently rated 5 and I REALLY don't think that's fair, c) It's the default and I don't care either way
:star::star: - Either a) It's kind of stinky, b) It's currently rated 5 and I REALLY REALLY don't think that's fair, c) I'm not in a very good mood.
:star: - Either a) It's one of the most horrible levels EVER, b) It's currently rated 5 and I REALLY REALLY REALLY don't think that's fair, or c) I have a bad headache and just don't feel like playing games right now.

No... seriously... RangerZero hit it on the head. I just send a PSN message asking him what he thought... and that's pretty much what I leave.

Ok, I guess it's time to come clean about how I rate.
If I liked the level, I'll give it :star::star::star::star::star:
If I didn't like it, it gets :star:

Almost the same for me. I think if the level shows that someone put a genuine effort into making it, its a :star::star::star::star::star: from me. If it is mindless or just a waste of time, its a :star:. I don't feel like I should punish people who maybe put in a lot of work, but the level wasn't perfect. It's somewhat of a Golden Rule philosophy. I don't like seeing 2 stars on my levels that I worked really hard on, so why would someone else. If the level shows effort, :star::star::star::star::star:, plain and simple.

hmm personally it goes like this for me

:star::star::star::star::star:= an amazing level, either had outstanding visuals or creative and fun gameplay, though visuals help a lot aa do fluid designs and seamless transitions between puzzles or other elements. nothing ruins a level like 15 seconds of strait running to get to the next trap/enemy

:star::star::star::star: same as above but less so, maybe the visuals arent as high key and some of the contraptions arent as smooth running as they could be.

:star::star::star:fairly average, it has some good points and is worth playing even if only once, the kind you bring friends too if everyones played the most hearted list 5 times already

:star::star: needs some work, levels that consume time and arent really worth the effort, but they still have the basic elements of gameplay ie platforming ect (whether it is darkmatter blocks or not)

:star: Levels that do nothing, the creator didnt even try or purposely put nothing in such as the easy share trophy levels and now the ever increasing bomb drop clones (unless they did it really well and it isnt just zapata's timed explosives on a piece of sponge)

Other factors:

-1 :star: Knowing the difference between difficult and cheap, if i cant finish the level because of a trap with no warning or way to avoid, Though this doesnt count if the level is purposely made like it and warns your that that is what it is in the description, like the unfair platformer series

-1 :star: H4H nuff said, unless its like wex's inside the mind of lvl

-1 :star: It could be the best level in the history of the world, if there is a banner and the end telling me to "plz hart mah lvl and me" it doesnt deserve a full five

-1 :star: anysort of rudeness or meaness in the description or title, like "if you cant beat this then you suk" or the like, or if i know the author to be rude or mean as they have left distastefull comments on other peoples levels

-1:star: if the level is copied off anothers work, and especially so if it is done worse than the original

+or-?:star: if a level is reciving a rating way off what it should be ill overrate to help compensate, like a five star level getting one because the first 20 people to play it were all jealous

Yes i realize using my system its possible to get ratings under 1 or over 5 but you know? thats how i think it should be

:star::star::star::star::star: - An amazing level that aces in every department.
:star::star::star::star: - A great level, with great visuals, originality, or just plain fun.
:star::star::star: - A decent level, with good visuals
:star::star: - Levels that weren't made with much effort, slightly better than a one star level but still not good.
:star: - Trophy and H4H levels obviously, ugly levels that were probably made in 2 minutes, spelling and grammar errors abroad.

So everyone likes the star smiley then?

Tbh I only ever really give 5 stars or 1.

Good - 5
Sucks - 1

Easy. Most of the levels I see here get 5 stars. I feel that we as a community should be doing our bit to promote good levels, especially in the sea of H4H crap we see everyday. So levels from the guys on here will mostly get 5 stars. Ones I didn`t like get 3.

Sorry... on mine I should have added a bit more. I have a different rating system for LBPC members:

:star::star::star::star::star: LittleBigPlanet Central member
:star::star: Anything with pirates or martians
:star: LittleBigPlanet Central member who asked for H4H

You're coming from the generation of people that used "ring phones". You have to turn the ring to dial numbers. (i kinda miss those days)

I'll usually give 4 stars.

I would've laughed rather loudly at that, but sadly everyone in my house is sleeping.

Anywho...

:star::star::star::star::star: - Innovative, artistic, just plain fun
:star::star::star::star: - Fun, but nothing incredible
:star::star::star: - Had fun parts and bad parts
:star::star: - Not very good, but there's some potential in there

:star::star::star::star::star:= A really detailed, well thought out or clever level that's overall just a blast to play. I usually give 5 star levels a heart too.

:star::star::star::star:= A very good level, but it has some annoying flaws and isn't the best it could possibly be.

:star::star::star:= A ok level. It might not look good or work very well but effort was put in.

:star::star:= A quite bad level with little effort put in and also has many flaws.

:star:= Rocket cheetah levels, h4h levels, most trophy levels and levels that are copies of other levels (the author copied a copyable level and published it has his/her own).

I hate when that happens, because I've seen some genuinely amazing levels that I had just rated 5 stars, and then I'll check the comments to see that it is a blatant repost of someone else's hard work. Two major examples I can think of are Moving Parts and the Fireman Between Heaven And Hell levels.

Well, the cool thing is that you can go back to the copy and re-play it and leave a 1 star. LBP only counts the last one you left.

I think I'm quite generous with ratings. If it's obvious that someone has put a fair amount of effort in, I'll always rate accordingly.

However, if the current rating of the level is, in my opinion, far lower or higher than it should be, I'll try to rate accordingly.

I don't like the fact that I have to rate at all to be honest, but that's just me.
