Little Big Computer

Archive: 2 posts

I'm sure this has been done before, but I thought I would contribute my two cents.

I recently got interested in the idea of making a computer in little big planet. I originally made logic gates using thrusters, because I didn't realize there was a "directional" option for sensors/triggers that I could use with pistons. I then moved on to pistons once I discovered this, and made a full 4-bit adding machine including two 4-bit memory towers and a tower for adding them and placing the result back into the first tower.

Because of the sheer ammount of space required to make a simple 4-bit adding machine, I'm now experimenting with working in 8-bit memory, where all 8 bits are stored in a single location rather than split up among 1-bit memory.

The previous size of a single bit of memory was slightly larger than the built-in scoreboard, and my 8-bit memory (which is not yet complete) is slightly smaller than the scoreboard. I suspect the final size will be around 2-3 scoreboards.

The hardest part working with 8 bits at once is that I'm having to figure out how to deal with sending 8 bits of information in sequence. I've already got the *sending* part of that working, its just the *receiving* that i suspect will double or triple the current size.

The way I was able to get the 8 bits very small is that I used a hollow octagon with 8 pistons holding sensor targets out towards a center wheel, which spins (only once at a time) causing the sensor on it (limited to about 45 degrees) to also spin, seeing the different sensor targets (or not seeing them, if they are retracted.)

This sounds pretty cool you are right that it has been done before but it was a thermo killer if you can get it to work better then its a real developement.2009-06-19 09:13:00
