Need help with my first level...

Archive: 11 posts

It seems that everyone can create a level but me. I just tried to make a survival challenge level, but I couldn't do it. I don't see how I can make a level.

I mean I have level ideas...I just can never get them out. Ever. I really want to, but I just can't.

So I need help. What type of level is easiest for beginner creator's? I survival challenge level? A race? a regular level? What?

Any tips?

Simple walkthroughs with a few easy platforming challenges are the easiest (imo). Like the Gardens level in the story mode. Fairly easy to build and very easy to play. Throw a race in if you want - probably a good idea if the challenge is easy.

If it's the first time you're building a level don't worry - we all start somewhere. Just play around with stuff till you find something that interests you. Vehicles, characters, paintinator... whatever you want. There isn't a "right" kind of level -- lot's of different kinds out there.

For a first level, try not to be too serious and don't try too hard. After completing all of the tutorials, just mess around. Throw rockets and switches and pistons and bombs around and play with the lighting and fire and electricity and change around the backgrounds and play with materials and just have fun. That is the best way to get started, to develop your own creation style and make tons of great new level ideas through experimentation.2009-06-18 23:49:00

TC, I would assume that survival challenges are harder to make than simple platforming levels.

What I find easy to make are Temple levels. Pick something, anything, and make a Temple out of it. Right now I'm doing a Moon Temple, so I've got Moons everywhere along with traps. It's nothing spectacular, but it's a simple level with a consistent theme.

The best part about Temple levels is that the materials you use are all pretty much the same. So you don't have to worry about what materials to use for the basic structures. All you DO have to worry about is the decorations, and if you have already decided what your Temple is going to be about, then that shouldn't be too hard.

Good luck and I think the best way to improve is just to get out there and start creating. My first level sucks, my second one also sucks but is better, and my third (which I'm working on now) is IMO, very good. I don't think I could just skip to where I am right now as a creator without making my first two levels and learning from my mistakes.

Yeah - everyone starts somewhere. I should publish my first level, just to give you an idea of what we're all saying. I've never published it before cuz it's downright comical how bad it is. But I had fun, learned a LOT, and went on to create bigger, better stuff. And I still keep it on my moon cuz it has sentimental value to me. 2009-06-19 00:05:00

Just get an idea, and do the best you can. Then when you think it's pretty good, put it on the showcase F4F. The people around here will always help you make it better. During the process you'll learn a bunch. You just have to be willing to accept constructive criticism.2009-06-19 00:20:00

OK, thanks guys. I kinda made a level, but it's really a room with a night club theme (no there are no bad things in there, lol). I based the idea off of eustoma's (Person who someone recommended here with the emitter engine) room that was supposed to be for his friends and him to talk. Not that it was a room with a night club theme to it, but it was just a room.

Here is a picture:

What do you think from looking at the picture?

Tough to tell from a pic... but your couch and rocking chairs look pretty good.

I have trouble making levels I'm happy with as well. I can create a nice enough looking level with decent objects... but I feel like I fail at the "playability" aspect. Either things are too hard, aren't hard at all, or just not original or interesting. It's a tough thing to do well... which is why I have so much respect for many of the creators here on the forum.

Best advice I can give is not beat yourself up over it, and try to learn from those around you without copying other creators ideas... or putting a spin on them to make them yours or more original.

Based on the picture it looks like a good start. Nice and clean design and the materials you picked look good. I'd say you're off on the right foot! Keep it up!2009-06-19 06:31:00

THANK YOU!

If you guys haven't noticed, look to the very right, and you will see a blue/yellow circle sign. Yeah, that's on a bar table I made as well. I can't believe I made that, lol.

So, since it's just a room, if you guys want, I can publish that level online, and we can use that to communicate online, just like eustoma's room level was meant for. I can add a LOT of things for us if you like!

i personally agree with everyone that suggested a simple platformer. even if you look at my first level, its just a simple platformer.

after you make one, youll start getting the hang of it, and eventually make more complex platformers, with traps, complex machines, etc.

i think this is where most expert creators would normally start. so even if your level doesnt compare well with some other levels (im not saying it wouldnt! im sure itll turn out excellent. i mean, if you arent satisfied with your level compared to other's), just keep creating. soon enough you can be just as good as anyone else.
