Sheriff Sack : Cleaning up the town of Sackwood

Archive: 45 posts

Just republished this level as it disappeared from my published levels. I don't know if i did it accidentally when copying it to my moon or what happened but whatever it was I've had to republish as a new level and would appreciate it if you would like to play it and rate it. Thankyou.

No prizes for guessing from the title that it's a western themed level. The general premise is that you are the new Sheriff on your way to Sackwood to 'clean' up the town.

There are a few tasks in there so far which reward you with extra points when completed although you don't have to do all of them to complete the level. You can if you wish just admire the aesthetics although you'd miss out on quite a bit if you did.

I've also tried to incorporate some humour into the level as is typical of my style and I hope it comes across as good fun.

Anyway here are a few pics :

Hi mistervista! Just played your level, and here's my thoughts...

I thought this was a wonderful level. The details, the humour, the secret areas, all wrapped up in Wild Western fun.

PROS
+ The attention to detail is fabulous...
+ ... matched only by the humour
+ Secret areas make for replays
+ The horses and bulls were great
+ Totem poles, tents and smoke signals in LBP!
+ HOW!!!

CONS
- None

OVERALL
I think this level has great appeal for a wide range of players. I really enjoyed it and will need to play again to uncover all the secrets!

Rated 5*, Tagged with 'Brilliant' and Hearted.

Thanks MrsSB for such great comments. I look forward to seeing you climb that leaderboard when you find all the hidden points and prizes.

Did you ride the vulture by the way ?

Just one thing , my animals weren't as good as I hoped because the 'bulls' you liked were supposed to be 'buffalo' LOL.

Thanks anyway.

Recently republished because I found out 2 of the prize bubbles weren't present and correct. No idea why but one was empty and the other was just showing a black square.

Anyway I have rectified that now ( touchwood ) and added the Sackwood Special S41T Scoopermatic as an aced prize.

There are plenty of points up for grabs so surely someone can knock me off the top spot. I have had 38000 myself in practice but not registered that score so as to give you plenty of chance to beat me. Also I didn't go for every bubble or multiplier either so I'm guessing 39-40000 is possible.

Hi Mistervista I just played your level.

I really enjoyed the look and feel of this level, and all the animals you've created are brilliant - I loved the buffalo, and the eagle, and the way the mechanisms were all hidden for the horses.

Climbing the water towers took me a little whie to figure out, those pesky invisible platforms! but it was a lot of fun to ride the vulture.

I loved all the animals and people and objects you created for this level and am so happy you gave them away in prize bubbles! hurrah!

The only ones I couldn't get to were on top of the higher totem - I don't know how to get up there, I couldn't make the jump, but perhaps there's a technique

Only think I can think of there being that would be in 'improvement' is to make it slightly longer with a few more puzzles/activities and try to get rid of the 'blank' areas between sections, either by decorating or just making them smaller.

Oh! I loved the tumbleweed too

I gave it 4* and hearted

Thanks pippy. Glad you liked it overall and to answer your concerns :

The only ones I couldn't get to were on top of the higher totem - I don't know how to get up there, I couldn't make the jump, but perhaps there's a technique

That is fairly tricky although very doable. I usually need several attempts myself. It's just a matter of timing the jump exactly right so you take off right on the edge of the previous totem pole and land on the edge of the big one. I didn't want to make it too easy because the level isn't that challenging overall and it isn't necessary to do that part to complete the level. It's just there for anyone who wants to go for all the points and prizes. Keep trying and you will do it.

Only think I can think of there being that would be in 'improvement' is to make it slightly longer with a few more puzzles/activities and try to get rid of the 'blank' areas between sections, either by decorating or just making them smaller.

I take your point there. I did want to make it longer ( I have about 3 bars of thermo left ) but I ran into the end of the level. I didn't want to put a lift or winch up to another level because I thought that would detract from the aesthetics and the theme overall. I suppose I could have some rocks to climb depending on how much thermo they take up. I will look into that.

As for the blank areas I deliberately put those in for 2 reasons : (1) I didn't want everything cluttered together too closely and (2) I wanted it to be obvious that you were moving on from one task and beginning the next. I tried to make them fairly short though.

Thanks for playing and giving feedback. I have played your level and will leave feedback in that thread.

I just played this earlier, and really enjoyed it. I hadn't been giving as much level feedback lately because of some time constraints and a few other LBP things going on, but I saw this one being published earlier and wanted to give it a shot.

PROS:

Great custom content, as usual! This is definately your stong point, and and makes playing your levels a really entertaining experience.

Loved the "birds-nest" area. Throwing yourself up in the air in that section was a lot of fun.

Some great memorable moments, such as in the bar. Nice touch making the gulp sounds and flying bottles as you work your way through it.

The part where you're trying to catch the carriage with junk falling out the back was fantastic - it really kicked the gameplay up a notch.

CONS

Getting in the stage coach was a bit frustrating. 2 things that I thought could make it more enjoyable - 1) SLIGHTLY lowering the window to make it a bit easier to jump in, 2) It seemed to start taking off immediately when entering. It might be smoother if you put an off-screen piston that paused the starting of the stagecoach for a second until your properly in.

Jumping up the ladder in the rat part - I know where you're going with this one, and it's an interesting idea having invisible floor sections to emulate climbing the ladder, but when you can't see the platforms it FEELS a bit frustrating. It was difficult to figure out exactly where the steps were, which took a bit of fun away from this area. I think it would probably be more fun if you could see the steps you were jumping on.

The totem poles - It took quite a bit of practice to learn exactly how to get all the points up there. Even though I agree (I read the previous post) with adding a bit of difficulty, it seemed these jumps had to be exact and for someone who has never done it, it could be frustrating not knowing the trick of running EXACTLY to the end. I would personally think making it just a TAD easier to make these jumps would make it more enjoyable.

All in all I really enjoyed this level - I definately felt it was a 4-star level (but I gave it 5 and a heart ).

It seems like every other week now I'm playing through a Mistervista level, but I have to say that your levels are improving very much! I've always liked the idea of a level where you don't have to do anything, like RangerZero's and ClarkDef's. But this one is set in the wild west. The best of the west, if you will. and I loved it

Pros:
+ The chracters are lovely
+ Some really good design of creatures as well
+ The humour is undeniabley brilliant!
+ Lots of points to collect
+ Tonnes of hidden bubbles and points
+ Just overall has that fun feel to it
+ Lots of polish

Cons:
- Some of the chracter design near the beginning could have used some work. Just all seemed a little blocky there.
- With Ccubagge on the Stage Coach thing, seemed to be a little fast in taking off without you!

Overall though :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart

Yeah characters are one of my major weakpoints, I just can't do good characters or faces. I know I did the FF7 cutouts but I had something to copy there and they were a lot bigger. When it comes to doing original and smaller characters I just suck. I must try harder in that department.

- With Ccubagge on the Stage Coach thing, seemed to be a little fast in taking off without you!

Sorry to hear you had trouble with that. I suppose because I played it so many times during production it just became second nature to me and I never saw that as a problem.

It is possible to jump in one of the side windows which are a tad lower and it will still work. Try that if you haven't already. If you still have problems let me know and I'll try to alter the step somehow. I did it the way it is because I wanted it to be as unobtrusive as possible.

I actually expected more complaints about it being tricky to get over the driver onto the top of the stagecoach. Did you find that ok?

As for the piston delay thing I have no idea how to set a delay. I don't understand logic switches at all. I couldn't tell you what sort of switch system I used because I don't know what it is LOL. I just use trial and error as best as I can until I get something that works.

It was difficult to figure out exactly where the steps were, which took a bit of fun away from this area. I think it would probably be more fun if you could see the steps you were jumping on.

Yeah it seemed like a good idea at the time. I had a normal sideways on ladder originally but changed it to that because I thought it was cooler but I agree it is a tad awkward because I made the invisible steps the same width as the ladder so it didn't look like you were jumping up the side of it. I'll have a look at that and try to put in something better.

I will move those Totem poles a touch closer aswell. I knew they were tricky but I just thought I'd wait for feedback first because I usually get complaints that my levels are far too easy.

Thanks for all the feedback guys anyway and I will get on to fixing what I can asap. I'll edit this post when I've done it so if you could try it again after that and please let me know what it's like and if anything else needs fixing I would appreciate that.

UPDATE : I HAVE ALTERED THE STAGECOACH SO THAT IT WAITS A COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE MOVING OFF AND PUT THE TOTEM POLES SLIGHTLY CLOSER TOGETHER SO THEY ARE VERY EASY NOW. I TRIED 2 DIFFERENT LADDERS IN THE GRAIN STORE ( ONE ANGLED AND ONE WHERE I MADE THE PRESENT ONES PLATFORMS VISIBLE ) BUT THEY BOTH LOOKED RUBBISH SO I LEFT THAT AS IS. I'M SURE IF YOU TRY IT AS I SAY IN MY REPLY TO MORGANA BELOW YOU'LL FIND IT VERY EASY AND WONDER WHAT ALL THE FUSS WAS ABOUT. I HOPE SO ANYWAY.

I loved this level for lots of reasons.

The stagecoach.
The animals, particularly the horse in the smithy and the buffalo were great.
The totem poles looked really authentic.
Colours and materials used suited the stage.
Humour-even I laughed (unusual for me).
Choice of music couldn't have been better.
Also loved the blacksmith and his anvil.
Liked all of it really!!

I spent quite a while jumping from drum to drum so I could hear the 'bong'!!!!!

Oh and must mention the pooper scooper-genius.

Brilliant work.

Played it last night and really enjoyed the look of the level. Great lighting and fantastic detail work on the buildings the stagecoach the totem poles and the buffalo. I knew they were buffalo

Clever and humerous parts I really enjoyed were the saloon sound effects, the tumble weeds, the smoke signials and luggage on the stagecoach.

I did have a few things that stood out as confusing or needed revisiting, most of which CCubbage has mentioned above.

The ladder - while novel and a pretty good solution to the whole sackboy can't climb ladders thing was really hard to do. Lots of plane shifting and not knowing where to jump made it a bit tricky. I know it won't look as cool but you may consider one of those vertical jump sections where the platforms are evenly spaced but in front and back planes so sackboy sort of jumps forward and back to get to the top.

I didn't quite understand the floating bubbles either. I managed to get them but without a visual clue how to get them many players may become confused and skip them.

I think I would have also preferred more interactive stuff. Swings, jumps or just more moving things. Pace seemed slow in terms of gameplay.

Overall I really liked the level. I rated it 4 stars. Thanks for sharing it!

Thanks Morgana and Smasher. To address your queries :

I know it won't look as cool but you may consider one of those vertical jump sections where the platforms are evenly spaced but in front and back planes so sackboy sort of jumps forward and back to get to the top.

The way you describe it is almost exactly the way I've done it. The invisible platforms are evenly spaced on the front and middle planes as the back plane is occupied by the shelves. Please try again and start off on the front plane directly in front of the ladder. I'm sure you'll find it really easy that way. The platforms by the way are the same width as the ladder.

I didn't quite understand the floating bubbles either. I managed to get them but without a visual clue how to get them many players may become confused and skip them.

What I tried to do here was use invisible floors in a more creative way rather than just for the sake of using them as a lot of people seem to be doing. The idea was to give the illusion that you were actually jumping on the rocks in the background scenery. I know it doesn't work perfectly because as you move the camera moves also which does somewhat spoil the effect but I played around with the positioning of them and got them as close as I could. I hope that makes sense !

Yeah I know the only slight danger is the rats but as it was Sheriff Sack's first day on the job I wanted to ease him in gently as I hope to make this into a series if there is demand for it and wanted to leave some leeway for using tougher enemies and maybe bosses in future episodes. I didn't want to throw him in at the deep end right away. Also I'm not very skilled at making enemies or bosses yet so need a bit more thinking and practice time myself to come up with something decent.

I did think of putting some rattle snakes in but I've already seen that done in another Western level ( I think it was by The Pred ) so I didn't want it to look like I was copying. I like to come up with original things of my own as much as possible. Having said that there are that many levels out there I haven't seen that probably everything I do has been done already somewhere, who knows?

If anyone has any ideas or preferences for anything they would like to see in future episodes please tell me and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks.

Yep I thought of that one too but I so do not want to use the **** paintinator. I'm starting to really hate the sight of that thing now. It would totally ruin the feel of the Old Wild West theme.

I'm waiting for MM to give us a proper gun and other weapons. I don't agree at all with some people saying a gun is not appropriate content. That's complete bull****. Where in the real world does it say that guns are BAD but killing people with FIRE, ELECTRIC, SPIKES, LETHAL GAS, ETC' is OK.

I'm sure it would be really easy for MM to alter the paintinator to look more like a normal weapon which would fit the level theme better. They could use exactly the same mechanics and just alter the look of it. How easy is that ?

Hey Mistervista. I just played your level I thought it was alot of fun. I like the hidden areas and the object design was awesome. Also I loved that trick with the ladder. I will definitely
try that in one of my future levels. 5 stars. Yes you did here right part 2 will be coming out wednesday. Also I lightened up the ending of part 1 a bit. It looks fine on my tv so I guess I never thought about. But thanks again and I loved the level.

I loved the level
great saloon, tumbleweeds, buffalo, horses, and I loved the blacksmiths, shops, and windmills, it was just great
the only thing I didn't like about it was how hard it was to get so many of the prizes and score bubbles there were so many points i could see just sitting on top of buildings, but i had no idea how to get to them, (and believe me I did try.) I also thought it was pretty wierd how you just put a bunch of score bubbles on an invisible layer of dark matter so they were just floating in mid-air. And you mentioned something about riding a vulture? lol im gonna have to try to look for that.

however, despite those setbacks it gets an easy 5 stars

With regards to the bubbles in mid air see my reply about 6 posts earlier to that same question.

As for the points on the roofs and the vulture I'll give you a clue : bird's nests ??

Hi Mister Vista, I played your level yesterday and really enjoyed it. The whole thing had a really nice look and feel to it.

PROS

Visually, I particularly liked the Saloon bar, with the fighting noises and the throwing of bottles, and the blacksmith. The smoke signals were also great.

The prize bubbles hidden inside the luggage on top of the wagon was a good idea.

The little comedy skit with the two Indians was very funny too. Made me chuckle.

Catching a ride with the eagle to get to the secret area was a good idea, and well executed. Generally I like all the secret/hard to reach areas, gives some replay value.

Tumbleweed!

Catching the runaway wagon at the end was fun.

CONS

I couldn't get the bubbles in the air after the blacksmith, and had no idea what to try until reading the posts here... maybe a clue here?

The jump from the second totem pole is very difficult and I gave up trying after the second failed attempt. There is just too much precision jumping required to get back up and try again. I realize that this is part of the challenge, but I just found it frustrating.

Getting on the roof of the wagon at the start is difficult. It's the jump to get over the guy driving it which had me getting annoyed. I was trying to jump from his knee on to the top of his hat and over, which was pretty annoying to pull off. Maybe there is an easier way? If not, there should be. Maybe you could drag some haystacks over to provide a platform to jump from or something?

Could do with a better ending. Maybe something a bit more challenging or dangerous.

SCORE

Overall I really loved this level, just because the look was so consistent with the theme, and it was just fun to play through with a bit of challenge and replay value as well. It was a very charming level and it charmed me into giving it 5* and a heart, I hearted you as a creator too, as I saw you have many other levels which I would like to have a look at.

Thanks chillum, I'm not sure why you had trouble with the totem poles because they should be pretty easy now. After earlier feedback I did move them a full two small grid squares closer together and thought I had made them too easy now because they were possible before I moved them.

As for the stagecoach that is the only way on and I did expect more complaints about that. I will take a look and see if I can do anything better there. I may be able to stack some crates or something on the back layer where the barrels are ( maybe just extra barrels ) to make it easier.

I just played this level and it was a lot of fun. It looks great. You put in so many details. Tumbleweeds, clothing for the NPCs, the landscape in general, and the creatures were also of high quality. The saloon was really funny.

The ladder worked really well, except on the middle shelf. From the ground floor or first shelf, it is easy to get onto the ladder. From the middle shelf, I couldn't do it very easily at all.

For the poop scooping mission, maybe it's just me, but I pushed the poop as far right as I could, and the lower door of the S41T device got stuck under a buffalo's hooves. The S41T was strong enough to break off the buffalo's hoof and scoop up the poop, but maybe something could be done about that? The poor thing is missing a foot.

Also, for the horse chasing mission, you can just go to the farthest back plane and not have to worry about the obstacles.

I played through once, but it was so fun that I played through again. I'm second place to you on the high scores, so I might play through again to try to dethrone you. It was a pleasure to play this level. Thanks for publishing it.

Thanks tashi, I have been thinking about the buffalo part but haven't come up with a decent solution yet. I originally had it loose but then it was possible to lift the buffalo up so I put some dark matter behind it to stop that happening but as you say it breaks it's foot off now.

Oh wait i could move that and just put a dirty great rock there. LOL why didn't I think of that before. I must think better when I'm half asleep like now.

Same with the wagon. I realised afterwards you could run down the front layer and put the barrels in. I'll have to put some rocks or something on the back layer too.

As for the ladder you can't get on it from the middle shelf, you have to jump down again.I tried a few variations on that with placement and different sorts of ladder but that was about the best compromise I finished up with. I know it's not perfect but i thought I'd leave it in as it's not a big section and I hope it's only a minor annoyance and doesn't spoil the level too much.

Thanks for pointing those things out and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm trying to come up with ideas for part 2 now.

BTW my score is beatable as I didn't get every multiplier the best I could. I missed a couple.

Yo!

Just played this couple of minutes ago, and it was fantastic.

It really felt like I was in the Wild West era.
The details were amazing, I really liked the buffalo and the blacksmither.

As mentioned on the other post, there wasn't that much danger, but over all i gave it a:star::star::star::star: and a heart:arg:

Sorry to hear about this mishap, MrV, how ever it may have happened.

Anyway, to business...

I loved this level when I originally played it, and my opinion hasn't changed! Great fun, great characters and great BUFFALO (see, I can now tell the difference!!!)

A lot of care and consideration has been given to the secrets and reward bubbles. Very good fun with a relaxed, cartoony feel.

I'd like to endorse the new ending - it's changed slightly from when I first played. Good stuff, and, as you know already, I think your train is awesomesauce!

Well done, 'owd fella. Top banana!

UPDATE : Just found out it was moderated. I didn't realise a message appeared in the 'view lbp messages' section when you press start. I assumed it came up on screen. Weird how it let me republish even though i didn't remove anything though.

Thanks to Dan Westy for pointing me in the right direction to find the message.

It would be nice if they told you WHY it was moderated though so you know what to change.

The only thing i can think is that it was my S41T scoopermatic so i have just removed that reference altogether. A shame because i thought that was quite funny.

I've seen much worse than that in levels though so I don't really know if it was that or not. Would Spaff Molecule or anyone else at Mm care to enlighten me ?

BTW only recently I saw a level called 'Sheep Sha**er' only it was written in full. How on earth did he get away with writing that when perfectly normal words are moderated!!

bless me if'n ah didn't jus luuuuuve ever lil' bit O that level!
It was jes cute as uh bug!
( okay, enough of that)

The totem poles didn't give me a whole lot of trouble. I got it in a couple of tries, and I am strictly average in skill. On the other hand, I think they could be harder. after all, it's extra points, not somthing required to complete the level. I think bonus prizes and score SHOULD be harder to get than the average task in a level.

the invisible paths over the background rocks. After reading the previous posts, I have to say that I understood that the first time through, so i thinks it works tolerable well.

I liked the little "who's on first" routine between the two braves.

the scoopermatic doesn't really fit, does it? it sort of takes me out of the whole western motif. maybee if it wern't bright orange.

Greetings mistervista

Very cute level.. loved the almost insane attention to detail on all the objects. Cute story as well as a nice fun little adventure.

Pros
Wagon was primo!
Nifty ride on the vulture..
Incredible detail on the saloon and other buildings as well as amazing totem poles and Indian Village.
Bad puns.. love em!! Quite the different level and very refreshing in it's simple, but fun for everyone style.
Love the tumbleweeds!

Cons
None really.. but allow me to use this as some possible suggestions.

I think what I would like to suggest for your next adventure is to see possibly a few more set pieces in the foreground to help add a bit more dimension on front thin layer as well as thick where allowable. That feeling may have been due to being on the floor so to speak, so please forgive me if you already used all those layers or avoiding interaction with any of the moving pieces. Truthfully I never counted so sorry if you already had stuff there. I also noticed that right before the ending sorta ran into the far wall. Possibly creating a mountain range or something to eliminate the view around the corner so to speak may remove that feeling.

I had to give it :star::star::star::star: and a heart for the props alone!

Thanks jw , I'm glad you liked it.

I do agree entirely with you on that. If there's one thing I'm terrible at it's scenery. I just don't seem to be able to visualise decent scenery and incorporate it for the life of me. I never even think of putting some in the foreground. Although for the first half of this level I couldn't put anything at all in the foreground because it would get in the way of the 'Tumbleweed'.

If/when online create comes out I'd love to collaborate with someone who can do good scenery and I'll do the objects. I'm ok if I have a picture to copy but I haven't got an artistic bone in my body. I've never even been able to draw for peanuts ( not even one of Rock's !! ) so I can't even draw my levels and work from that. I just have to make it up as I go along. That's also why I usually end up accidentally using every layer with my objects and having to use the stock backgrounds from the tools bag.

I'll have to take an art course or something.

YEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAA!!

Dat's one rootin'-tootin' level you got yo'self there boy! (skyway73 spits in a bucket)

Ahem.. Had a few goes, enjoyed trying to ace it and rack up some points (think I ended up 4th and that's without getting those 'floating bubbles' but I may return..)

Pros

Captured the feel of the Wild West in style
Lovely stagecoach, buffalo and train
The vulture ride was special, reminded me of the old arcade game Pac-Land
The saloon was expertly done, loved the falling sign
Tumbleweed! Good work.

Cons

I got stuck a couple of times in the small stagecoach window
As mentioned before, the ladder got me a bit frustrated until I worked out the system
As much as I love the poop scooper I agree that it did feel out of place but not to any great degree. I'm trying hard to think of negatives but there are very few really.

Oh, and the humour worked nicely. On a side note, can anyone recommend any other humourous levels? I have yet to play anything that made me properly laugh.

I look forward to checking out your other work mistervista.

Thanks skyway, great feedback and very much in character. I'm glad it had that effect on you.

Sorry about getting stuck in the stagecoach window. I've honestly never had that and I've played it tons of times and jumped in even the smallest window and never got stuck. I don't know what happened there but I'll investigate it asap.

I'm hoping to get cracking on part 2 pretty soon so if you have anything you'd like to see in it let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Got in from work and couldn't resist a couple more goes to try and get the top score. I can relax now (well, until someone beats it!)

As for part 2, I'm glad you plan to make it. I'm no expert on the wild west but I'll give you a few ideas which may or may not fit/work:

An old delapidated building you have to negotiate as bits collapse?
A trip down into a gold mine, even a mine cart maybe? Though I guess we have sort of done that in Story mode.
Jumping across some cacti with strategically placed spikes?
A ride on the old rail road would be pretty nifty too.
How about we get to really go into the Double 6 Saloon? I can imagine running along the bar and up onto balconies, maybe swinging on an old chandelier with candles on.

Anyway, just a few thoughts. Feel free to ignore
