How do judges decide for the winner on a competition?

I don't know... Do we PM each other or what? I'm a judge for an upcoming competition, so I need to know.2009-06-18 17:37:00

Yep. You just PM the other judges and see who they feel should win. The entrant that is nominated the most will become the winner.

Okay, thanks, Killian.

Or you could use a point-based system.
A judge gives certain score to each submission to whatever the contest is about, then all 3 judjes add their scores and whoever had the most points wins.
That also decides 2nd, 3rd and any other place after that.

with the points based system you can use a scale like 1-10 and add up as silver suggested.

another option is to use ranks. Each judge ranks the submissions. The advantage here is when judging a submission you have to consider all the submissions simutaniously and you can not assign a tie. After all judges assing ranks you can add them up. Here the lowest score would be the best.

with points you can give them both 10 points (a tie), but a judge's job should be to distingish a winner, and not hand out ties. A judge that hands out a tie is basicly saying i am too incompetent to pick a winner.

If you result in a tie when combining all the judges scores you can toss out the high and low scores of the tied entries until you come to a winner (here an odd number of judges would be preffered as you if you throw out two scores a time you will finally be left to one score per level. which could still result in a tie, so in that case i would procede to the next method of tie breaking i mention here). Or ask all the judges to re-rank the tied entries (also an advantage to have an odd number of judges as you wont result in a tie.).

I manly like the idea of scoring by ranks becuase it eliminates the bias some of the bias of being first or last in line, becuase the judge has to consider all at once to assign ranks.

OK, I did that for my competition. I invited you and GrahamLif3 so that when the Contest ends we can vote for the winner. Thanks, Sage!
