Don't you hate it when....

Archive: 10 posts

....you spend several hours working on a level, only to create one small element that makes you realize, "oh, THIS is what an entire level should be built around!"

This happened to me last night: I was working on a water park level (which wasn't going well), but I persisted having put several hours into it already. I created a waterfall that was pretty cool, and when I woke up this morning, I suddenly had an idea for an entire different level.

Guess you have to know when to pack in a bad idea and move forward with a better one.

Oh tottally if something you make gives you an idea for an even better level then i stand by it. This has happened to me but i don't hate it, It just makes your outcome even better. I wouldn't scrap any ideas though when you can make them work well then go with it.2009-06-18 14:37:00

I hate that, i have one idea, and then two seconds later, i have another one, because of this, about 15 spots on my moon are filled with not even halfly started levels.2009-06-20 21:37:00

I'd love it if this happened to me, then maybe I might have more levels. It's funny how you guys hate that you have too many ideas, I hate that I can't think of anything .2009-06-21 07:35:00

you have no idea lol i have so many concepts its not even funny, i even sometimes just restart on making a level with the same idea just in a different way so i have two levels taking up space with the same idea

this doesnt really annoy me that much, my biggest lbp pet peeve is when you spend half an hour working on some crazy insane contraption and finally get it just perfect, then you go to test it and realize that your other insanely crazy contraption has broken and you can rewind to save it or youll lose your current masterpiece

I don't mind it. I actually kinda like it as then you get 2 levels you know you're gonna try to make.2009-06-21 11:20:00

I only have two levels on the go in my moon, one's been half finished for a couple of months, the others just started. Once I start something I finish it (other than one-off above), and never have multiple levels on the go.2009-06-21 11:24:00

Yeah i kinda hate it too.
My Moon is running out of unfinnished levels for me.

But working on other levels helps me think of other ideas for other levels as well.

For example, when i get stuck on what to put into Level A, i just work on Level B and then go back to Level A with a new idea i got from Level B.

But sadly because of this... i still havn't got a "finnished" level published yet >.<

Yes, that can be somewhat annoying, but i look at it all as kind of a learning experience. There is ALWAYS something new going on with LBP, and one is always growing as a creator, learning new tips and tricks along the way. Heck, i've yet to make a 4* actual level (a few of my demos are 4* but those don't count IMO) its all just one big learning experience ;p2009-06-23 06:29:00

Couple tricks:

In a "test" level, find a few mechanics that you feel are REALLY fun, then build the level around them. Also, figure out the few "key" standout areas in your level and build those first. This helps.

Many of the best level creators have experience in pre-planning and doing things in an organized way, and it's easy to see in the end result.

Here's how I built a few of my levels:

Splat Invaders Saga - I figured out how to make shapes smoothly fly around a room, and figured out the full paintinator mechanics. I played with it to see whether it would be fun. I planned out what was going to be contained in the entire level and pre-built the objects and mechanics - so the mechanics were done by the time I built the level, which let me concentrate on things less technical while building.

Tiger Woods Mini Golf - I sat and played with the golf mechanic for several days until I felt it was "fun" - then built the entire thing around the mechanic.

I pretty much figure out ways to "play" parts of the level before I build it.
