LBP sales is a FLOP or a Success ??

Archive: 12 posts

I know that it's a success, but reading some comments like this

Color me not surprised. It's rare that a toy business wants to risk videogames figures. And LBP isn't eactly a thunder in matter of sales so I guess they just calculated it wouldn't be much profitable.

i've see that it havent' saled so much...

Over a millions sales seems good enough to me. After all it's a new franchise and not a shooter. ^.^2009-06-18 14:09:00

If you include revenue from DLC, I think it's safe to assume that LBP is a fairly profitable venture. After all, if it wasn't profitable they wouldn't be supporting it still. 2009-06-18 14:13:00

They must be earning an absolute ton from the DLC. I mean, ?5 for a few costumes? They must be loving it!2009-06-18 14:18:00

They should still be marketing this game, unlike a shooter it doesnt get stale and replaced by the compitition. As there really is no competition in this genre. Plus it probably the only game that has gotten better since it release.

When i first saw it, the marketing was all cute and kiddy. So when i first saw it wasnt sure but as i read press about it i got very interested and now is my favorite game. This game can appeal to everyone a change of marketing strategies i think they can pick up a larger player base by going after people that saw it as a kiddy game.

Basically if your anyone that wouldnt miss a super mario game, you should not be missing this game.

@deboerdave: Well, I'm starting to get a bit bored by it all to be honest.

Sales are highly contextual. You cannot judge them without knowing what's gravitating around. Alots of factor will change the perception of sales number:

-Production cost of the game.
-Is it new IP or a well knowned IP.
-Is it a niche genre/new genre or a well known one.
-Time of the year the game is released.
-What were sales expectations.

Also, I might had that everything isn't black or white. Your sales aren't just a win or a fail. They can be "ok" too.

Right now I think the LBP sales are good. No a thunder no, but it met Sony's expectations at least. You have to consider it's a new happy in a niche/new genre so it's a high risk game. I think it could (and should) have performed tremendously better but it seems that it did perform good enough for Sony. If it wasn't the case, the game wouldn't receive this much support and the idea of "play/create/share" would sail away.

LBP is million sellers when you count all territories. It did perform bad in Japan and way better in Europe. I wouldn't call it a thunder because they are games out there (like MGS4) that did sold half the LBP sales so far in their first week of release (MGS4 for instance did sold around 500k)

So yeah LBP isn't "a fail". Let's celebrate

I think it's sold very well for what sort of game it is. If it was a shooter, you could consider it a bit of a sales flop, but it isn't. It's something new and unique, which usually doesn't sell well in today's gaming industry. They must be making LOTS of money from the DLC too.2009-06-19 18:36:00

Well everyone can get bored with any game. what my point is that i think the marketing strategy could be broader in scope. As Anyone that is a mario fan/platforming fan and bought Galaxy would enjoy this game if they bought. Beyond that this is a creative medium so people that are usually not into platforming games would enjoy this game through the create aspect.
I just really didnt see much to much advertisement for this game unless you look at gaming websites. And when you did see something there it was like cute and kiddy as i mentioned before, which might of turned a lot of people off. The diversity of what is possible never really came through in any advertisement. Like if there was like the cute stuff. Then have differ marketing that kinda show dark stuff, so someone looking at it can really see that there are no limits to what the game can be. And you may grab the attention of people that were turned off initially.

And since the game has really no compition in what it is you could luanch secondary marketing later in time showcase whats happening here and how it is evolving and grab new peoples attention that intial overlooked it.

With a standard games they really dont evolve so there is no reason to luanch a secondary marketing scheme, as well as the game is strictly defined in what the content is. With lbp the content is endless. With that i would like to see mm continue to work on matching players with levels they would enjoy created by otherusers. like sometime is hard to find challenging levels as they get bad rating from lousy players early on and disappear fast.
